I found out recently that I had a form of acid reflux disease. I was taking allot of ibuprophen for a back problem and I often eat peppermint breath candies. Doc told me that both are likely the cause of the problem, so I replaced ibuprophen with acetaminophen and stopped eating the breath mints and problem is 90% solved. I still haven't found the answer to the sleepiness after lunch. Have you?

Just curious how many of you use any caffeine in the mornings. If the majority here use caffeine (coffee, tea or cola to wake up in the am to mid-morning) then I will post a more in-depth explanation, especially for women.

I have the same symptoms most everyone else has listed.. Sleep Apnea, very very extreme fatigue after eating, constipation... for most of my work life, I won't eat anything all day, because it makes me too tired to function...then when I get home, I'm ravenous...eat dinner then pass out. If I eat anything on the weekends, I'm sleeeping all weekend. If I want to get anything done at home on the weekends, I can't eat anything.... otherwise I won't get started. I do drink lots of cofee in the morning, and have also started drinking energy drinks.
The only time this tiredness hasn't affected me is when I completely cut out ALL CARBS... then, when I eat, I don't have the overwhelming need to sleep. But no carbs also means no vegatables, no fruits, etc, so not a good diet.
I've had this for the past 20 years..

I too get excessively sleepy after eating some meals. I do think the glycemic index has something to do with it. For instance...I just ate yogurt and a banana...certainly NOT a heavy meal, but some yogurt is higher in sugar and also bananas are too...then...CRASH! I literally doze at my computer...that's NOT a normal response...and I do believe it to be signaling insulin intolerance. I think the best bet is to exercise regularly and cut back on sugar (although it's literally in EVERYTHING...almost. Dairy products are hard to digest as well...and could add insult to injury.
Good luck to everyone...but a little sleepy after a big meal....normal...falling asleep at your computer after a yogurt and banana...NOT NORMAL!

I cant believe ive found people with the same problem....have had this for years, when i get that sedative feeliing it just ruins my whole day and sometimes the next day.....my wife thinks im just being lazy and making it up.....she says how can you be that tired?
the people posting about carbs and protein are bang on.....Ive stopped eating white rice and potatoes and changed to brown rice and sweet potatoes...the science is that the latter release energy slowly but white bread and white rice release it quickly...if you dont exercise immediately afterwards your body shuts down.
Iam not over exagerating but these simple changes have transformed my life....I havnt had the fealing since changing over....amazing.
Iam not over weight and Im very active but when i get this drugged feeling i cant do nothing to stop it.
trust me.......stop eating jacket potatoes, white potatoes, white rice, white bread for a couple of weeks and see what happens.
also i find snacking on mixed nuts and raisons gives me tons of energy.

I find that if the stools are not clear, I feel too sleepy after a meal in the afternoon. Just after clearing even a little bit, will completely remove that haziness or sleepiness from my brain and my eyes look sharp and clean!
High acidity can also induce sleep and one notices high acidic levels without heart burn as well in the form of indigestion or motions not clearing out.

Only a very small amount of this is caused by the size of your meal and the blood going to your stomach for digestion.
You are getting sleepy because in addition to lowering your blood sugar, insulin lets tryptophan into your brain, and melatonin is made from tryptophan, and melatonin puts you to sleep.
If you only ate tryptophan containing things (chicken/turkey) without combining it with sugar or starch (bread, pasta, rice, fruit), you wouldn't see this effect because because the tryptophan needs the insulin to get into the brain. You might see the effect if your last meal contained tryptophan, and it was still in your system, and then you are something that triggered the insulin response. If you have not consumed tryptophan in 10 hours and ate a high sugar/starch meal, you would not get sleepy, because there is no tryptophan.
If you are becoming insulin resistant (meaning your body needs to release a higher amount of insulin to reduce blood sugar after consuming a meal), this effect will be more pronounced, because more insulin, more tryptophan to brain, more melatnonin made. This is why some of you weren't always this way and it has developed over time. This is a sign that you are pre-diabetic, and should seriously reduce the amount of carbohydrate in yourt diet.
Also should make a note here that it is commonly thought that fructose does not impact blood sugar or insulin (because blood sugar is glucose). This is misleading. They are finding now that through an indirect method, fructose is a main contributer to causing insulin resistance.

Well you would have to have a lot of tryptophan for that sort of reactoin to be triggered. It's in a lot of food so feeling sleepy after eating is not all that unusual. I felt this way actually when I was working a lot and only was able to get one or two meals a day. If you have five or six throughout the day, you don't feel the same sugar crash. What do you think?

To me, it reminds me of the same miserable wave of fatigue that comes over you when you're breastfeeding. It's very common for nursing mom's to be overcome with the need to sleep. Sometimes explained as catching up on lost sleep, I read somewhere that it's actually a chemical that's released by whatever biological processes going on right after letdown. I wonder if my hormones are all crazy after 3 bouts of lactation over 8 years.

That makes a lot of sense although I don't know if it would still persist after you have already lactated for so long. I do think it's a plausible explanation though. Hav eoyu been to a sleep clinic? They usually can provide better help.

Just thought I'd add a note here re. Narcolepsy, which was mentioned a while back. I have Narcolepsy, and the 'falling asleep during/after eating' isn't usually 'falling asleep'. It's actually the Cataplexy element of Narcolepsy (incidentally, not experienced by all Narcoleptics), which is routinely described as 'a sudden loss of muscle tone'. Principal triggers are emotional upheaval, sex, laughter, stress, exercise and also eating. Basically, certain muscle groups (sometimes all) simply refuse to do their stuff, and the person or part of the person will drop. E.g., if it's the legs that are affected, the person might fall to the ground, if its the neck, then the person's head will drop forward. Whilst it might seem as though the person has suddenly fallen asleep, this isn't the case, and the person is in fact fully compos mentis - although often unable to talk or move. As you can imagine, this can be more than a little frustrating!
I can fully sympathise with all you sleepy people out there, even if it is only temporary. Dietary changes have made a big change to my daytime sleepiness, so I'm sure that many of you are on the right track. Incidentally, I arrived here after doing a quick check as to whether it was considered normal for a three year old to fall fast asleep whilst eating her lunch... Well, she seems quite happy dozing next to me, and we have had a hectic morning!

I have had exactly the same problem many years ago and i got rid of it in a week.
All the above answers are wrong, sorry, there is no other easy way to say it.
The reason you fall asleep after meals is that you are weak and lazy. This may seem a harsh statement, it is not intended to be so.
As the body gets older, it gets weaker, energy levels drop and the bodies various organs, including the stomach begin to slow down.
Strengthen the body with jogging or perhaps resistive type weight training and all these problems will disappear.
I used to fall asleep after meals, started jogging everyday, next week all the sleepiness was gone.
There is your answer. This is why children and young people do not fall asleep after meals, because they are stronger and more
active. It's all just plain common sense, nothing to do with the sedative effect of food, or any of that other rubbish, if food
was sedative we would all be falling asleep, but we don't, it only happens to older people.
