I have had a consistant problem since puberty. I am now 36 years old. When I was younger I hid it from my mother, I'm not sure why, but I was embarrassed and very private about MY privates.

I would get these very large bumps in my bikini line area. Sometimes swelling to the size of golf balls and once I remember it was so huge that I honestly can't believe I didn't tell someone. Looking back I'm sure I needed antibiotics to treat the infection sometimes I would even get sick from the infection in my body (at least I think that was what was going on). They would usually swell over a period of a week and then bust on their own or I would try and bust them on my own. They were/are VERY painful.

When I got older and out on my own, I finally sought medical attention and honestly I can't remember being given a specific diagnosis. My dermatologist would lance them when they were really bad and prescribe antibiotics. She referred me to a plastic suregon who explained to me that he sees this condition primarily in black women (I'm white, lucky me) and further explained that the oil glands in that area twist and turn as they go toward the surface of the skin and sometimes they become clogged, and infected. He removed 2 of my oil glands in that area.

I have continued to have problems on and off again over the years. I have become so accustomed to the problem that I usually don't seek medical attention unless it is REALLY bad. Most times I just put a warm compresses on them and try and bust them myself. It is still very painful. I was on birth control pills for the past 20 or so years and recently about a year ago went off the pill. I have noticed that the swollen oil gland problem is seeming to worsen, so I'm assuming it is related to hormones or something.

I once went to another plastic surgeon on the recommendation of my dermatologist and her suggestion that I basically get all my oil glands removed in that region, which in my opinion would have helped, but the prospect of having my bikini area cut from end to end and oil glands removed sounded quite scary. The plastic surgeon said he couldn't/wouldn't do it though because at the time the lesions I had were quite close to my labia lips and he said if he took out all the oil glands that my labia lips would flap (he compared it with castonets, not a pleasant picture, but said he had seen it happen to a patient of his that had the operation performed by another plastic surgeon). So I was basically left to just live with it.

I guess what I'm getting to, is there any type of treatment for this type of thing? I do still get the swollen pustual glands and not all of them are close to my labia lips. So should I revisit the plastic surgeon to discuss this once again, is there any type of hormone treatment, laser treatment or possibly (since I consider my self to be holistic in my health care approach) could even accupuntrue help me.

I really just am tired of living with this and if anyone knows or treament or has the same problems I would love some advice or even speculation.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I am not going to be much helpful to your specific condition but I suffer from the same stuff. It gets that big in three days time that I can’t move anywhere from my bed for another three days because it hurts like crazy to move, not to mention walk.
The first time I saw a doc, he said to apply ice (which hurt even more) and prescribed some spray that hasn’t helped at all. I was applying then cut tomato slices or cabbage leaves to bring out the inflammation but that didn’t cut the length of time needed for the bump to burst on its own.
I have had it for many times. It would occur every six months and I wouldn’t be able to walk for three days each time. Then I started visiting dermatologist when I would notice that the bump would start growing. The first time I was prescribed oral and topical antibiotic and it prevent the inflammation. The second time, I did the same but this time the antibiotics left a huge dent in my groin area that became black and looks really ugly.
Personally, I wouldn’t be removing oil glands.

Hey, I've gone through some of the same traumatic experiences as you. I've had really horrible red bumps that just wouldn't burst or even come to the surface sometimes. It's painful and irritating. I used to just try to burst them any way possible then put on polysporin every few hours. A few months later the bumps would still come but it didn't feel so painful cuz my skin was more moist. And when I did burst a bump - as much as it hurt i put rubbing alcohol on the recently open wound to clear out all the bacteria and clean the up wound then still applied polysporin afterward. Now i figured why not try another method. so i got laser hair removal. it takes about 8 sessions and you have to unfortunately wait about 6 weeks between sessions. BUT at the end of the sessions the hair is gone and the problems decrease a lot. =) also, if you get lasered also buy vitamin E capsules the highest strength possible. stick a pin in a capsule and squeeze all the vit.E oil on your bikini area and kinda massage it into your skin for a few minutes. it works great. i hope this helps. sorry it's so friggin long. enjoy

thanks alot Jtinatl for posting. i just had a lump grow next to my vagina, for the first time, and was so worried because i never heard of this. the docs told me its a sebum gland infected. thanks to people like you, other women don't feel alone in their pain (women go through a lot of pain!). since i read your entry i feel so much better knowing that its normal.

my doc told me to shave in the direction of the hair and not in opposition to the hair. and she gave me fucidine to put over the thing for as long as it takes to go away. if it doesnt go away in 2 weeks, i should go back to her and she'll treat it by taking out the stuff inside.

the idea of laser sounds good, i'll try that if the things come back and get worse.

good luck Jtinati. i find that when i ask God sincerely for help, he helps me with my problems taht seem unsolvable.

I also suffer from this condition and did not seek medical treatment until 3 weeks ago. I am 38 and white. My doctor referred to it as "Hidradenitis Suppurativa" and explained it as the gland becomes infected, it infects the next gland and so on. That's why at times, it seems to get larger and larger. I was prescribed antibiotics and told to place a warm compress over the swelling to help "bring it to a head". I was also informed there is no cure. Removing the glands is an option, but with that procedure they also remove the skin(due to chronic scarring from the outbreaks). Which means skin grafts, the skin doesn't graft well in that area because it's constantly in motion (walking). Also far as laser treatment, it's great if you are suffering from the issues surrounding ingrown hairs- but, it will be of no help with your glands. Sorry, I don't have any good advice for you. I've just decided oh well, it's something I have to live with.

hi

i have been having the same problem for about 3 years now. im 18 years old and because of these pimple like lumps i now have two small - i guess you could call them - craters that are about 1cm in diameter, half a centremetre in depth and a dark - bruise like - purple colour. i have had them about a year and have many smaller lighter ones all allong my bikini line. i constantly the lumps, i spoke to my cousin who is a nurse about them and she said they are infected sweat gland so i need to try to prevent sweaty oily moisture in that area. some of her tips to reduce the unwanted moisture and/or to avoid causing clogged glands were....

1. avoid shaving in the area prone to infection and try waxing or laser treatment to see if there is any improvement.

2. thoroughly clean and exfoliate the bikini line (and the surrounding area) on a regular basis to help remove dirt and bacteria as well as allowing the pores to breathe.

 3. to aid in reducing sweat on and around the bikini line try applying deodorant on a daily basis
- one that ive found really good is the new one from DOVE/REXONA
- clinical protection anti-perspirant deodorant. roughly $16 you apply it at night (best to sleep without underwear and loose pj allowing breathing). I live by this stuff. im allergic to deodorant and i can use this, as long as you apply it at night it works amazingly against sweat and being that it contains moisturiser and is applied as a cream it doesnt dry out the skin or clog the pores. and it lasts ages... i reckon using it both on your underarms and bikini  line it should last about 3-4 weeks at a minimum.

4a. try not to wear pants that are too tight (such as skinny jeans) especially when inflamation is present.

4b. try to wear underwear that doesnt sit too tight and is made out of light breathable fabrics.

4c. when ever and/or where ever you feel comfortable (and can get away with it) try going commando (no underwear) it is the ultimate way to allow the skin to bresthe, as well as reducing irritation caused by rubbing plus especially on a hot day it just feel so cool and refreshing.

Unfortunately as i suffer from many, many, many medical problems i am unable to follow these tips all the time but the times i am able to use these tips (especially 1,2 & 3) i find the serverity of the infection is dramatically reduced if not that the problem vanishs.

any other tips people have i would be interesting in hearing beause i find it to be so ugly and especially because im only 18 i want to reduce my chances of dealing with this my whole life. the purple scars, the redness, the swelling and especially the infected pus filled lump (at times swelling to be almost 3cm in length x 1cm in width x 0.5cm in height) make me feel so discusting, ugly and self-conscious. i leave the lights off when that area could be visible and rarely let anyone put their hands in that area (in fear they may feel lumps and craters and look or ask questions). I have a constant fear that someone is going to think its an sti or that they are going to say some mean and horrid. i dont want to sound up myself but im not ugly and since i lost about a third of my weight i dont have a bad body. i have always had self esteem issues, up until i lost just over 30kg i was ridiculed for almost 9 years about my weight and now that im finally free of that and i have the opportunity to be confident about myself especially my appearance these infections leave me going back to having 0% confidence.

sorry about the ridiculously long reply but ive been wanting to talk about this problem for so long but have been too afraid people would be discusted or creeped out by them and therefore wouldnt be sensitive to how this effects me.

Thanks so much for posting this information. I have this same issue. I have had it since I was about 18 and I am 25 now. I am also white. I think it is partially genetic b/c I know my mom had them and we both only get them on our left side....weird. My mom is now 55 and going through menopause and she no longer gets them.

I had 2 oil glands removed but I have still had more come up.  I hate it also and which I could keep them from emerging. My doctor told me to wash with Dial twice a day. This does help but I notice when I am about to have a really heavy period I will still get one to two. Mine last about 2 week before they subside.  Mine do not burst and just will return to normal. Sometimes they will shrink and grow multiple times before I notice they are back to normal.

I don't like where I had the two oil glands removed b/c I do have a scar about 1 inch long and you can see it when I wear a bathing suit. I am not going to remove any more oil glands and will just continue to try to prevent them

I am so glad to hear other people have this issue. Thanks for sharing.

I have had them lanced and they do return and swell up quite often.  I realized not to long ago that washing down there is not sufficent.  The oils are very waxy at times and so I have learned to do a couple things.  Use a rough wash cloth or scrubby when washing in the cracks along the side of your vagina.  Do not rub raw but, rub sufficently to be sure and remove all wax and oil build up daily.  Secondly once a week take alchohol on a dry washcloth and rub in the cracks you daily exfoliate.  This just really opens the pores and cleans them out.  The trick is to keep the skin open and clean so the oils can come out naturally.  I do this all the time and I think  I have only had like two swollen glands in that area in the last 5 years.  When one does kick up it is because I stopped my regiment.  When that happens use the hottest compresses you can stand and do it like 3 to 4 times a day, and usually within a day I can feel the swelling going down.   I told my doctor about it and she gave me a prescription deodorant to use in that area.  I though she did not understand what I was saying, but after reading other blogs she was trying to give me something to keep me dry down there.   That is fine but the key is to let the glands drain on their own so they don't clog up.

I too have suffered this fate, for over 40 years. I have found my best bet is to keep this area dry, no easy task to be sure. For years I wore paper pads to help absorb the moisture, but it is so expensive, hot, and the odor...So in a panic mode one day, I made a device, a detachable crotch out of muslin and terry cloth, all bias cut so it moves with you. It literally wraps around your crotch and hooks to itself with hooks and eyes and is washable hundreds of times. Since I have been wearing my coolwrapps (the extra P stands for perspiration,) I have had almost no outbreaks. I rarely get one now, and they are much smaller and do not hurt nearly as much. Also, something I use (to have to use quite often,) is toothpaste, directly on the big, painful, bump. I put a big glob of toothpaste (not gel) on the eruption at night, and rest assured this burns, and it will continue to burn for a while. But leave it on, wash it off in the morning shower, and you will notice your painful eruption it is almost gone. To keep the toothpaste from going everywhere, stick a make-up cotton pad on the toothpaste, before you pull your panties up. The coolwrapps are washable hundreds of times and are extremely comfortable, there is no comparison with a paper pad. The coolwrapps also encapsulate the elastic of your underwear, keeping the elastic from digging into your skin. Oh, and the coolwrapps will catch a laugh, no problem.

I would strongly suggest no more surgery.

I hope this helps.

This happens to me, but I'm a guy. The reason I think this happens to me is because I put deodorant in between my legs to stop chaffing. If I am not the only one this happens to somebody please leave a reply. Because I hope that I am right. And if anyone knows a way to stop the big pimple things from appearing without stopping applying deodorant that would be great too!

may I ask what some of your medical problems are? I too have several, and I'm wondering if there's some kind of relationship between these things and the other medical issues??

I have the same problem. My doctor cut the real big lump open, pushed out the pus. Then she said she would remove the lining of the lump. She said that's the only way to keep it from coming back. So, make sure u r getting rid of the lining!
