I suffered with this for six years, In October I had surgery to remove bone spurs from my spinal cord. The pain in my hand is completely gone and has not returned. My surgeon says that the spinal cord affects every part of our body and that one of the bone spurs was most likely pressing upon an area of the spinal cord that affected the bladder. I hope this helps in some way. God bless!

I have had an inoperable herniated disc at T-11/T-12 for over 5 years now. Perhaps that is why I am experiencing the hand pain when urinating. It could be pressing on a nerve affecting my bladder. Thank you for posting!

I have pain in the same locations at the same time;#1 or #2. The pain is specifically in the heel of my hands and in the last two joints of the palm side of my fingers. It presents like a pressure build up which only stops when I finish my business. I've had it for a long time, and when I mention it to my doctor, he says these symtoms are new to him and he cannot help me.

Comes and goes. My fingers cramp and are very painful. I have asked a urologist, an infection control Dr. helping with UTI, and a urogynecoligist. They all kind of smile and say they never heard of that.

Brandy the same thing happens to me when I have a UTI .. as a matter of fact I have one right now and decided to see if anyone went through this .. when I have a UTI I have the strong sensation when I urinate and the sensation shoots out of my hands .. a few years ago when I had a UTI I told the nurse about it and got the same look that you did .. at least now I know I'm not the only person that it happens to .. Surely we can't be the only two in the world that it happens to.

dear brandy and topcat,

I have the same sensations when I need to urinate and I know at least five other women who have this.  The doctors don't seem to know what it is and also ignore the symptons

I can't believe I found these posts!  My doctors have been looking at me as if I had two heads when I tell them about the terrible pain I have when voiding.  I have had this most of my life and I am 63.  Now they tell me it is age!  Really? What was their answer when I was younger? Either it was blamed on sex or infections. Neither of which has been the case.

I had my bladder treated with silver nitrate by one doctor. It helped, for a while. But that is also painful and very uncomfortable.  And expensive.  I have given up drinking anything but water. Giving up any soft drinks seemed to help some.  If I drink tea it is only tea that I make,  never at a restraurant. Tea that sets out grows a natural bacteria that can cause kidney stones as well as urinary infections.  I hope this helps someone.  Doctors don't want to deal with anything that might create work for them.

The first time I had a kidney infection about a year ago (age 69)... the pain was terrible in my hands upon urination or BM. Several times in the last year I've had urinary tract infection and the first clue is the pain in the hands. I mentioned it to my doctor and he just looked at me like I was nuts. If anyone has a solution, I'd appreciate a response.

I also have similar pain. It begins 10 seconds before I begin to urinate and last for upto 45 sendings into urination. The burning pain is on my both thumbs on top surface. I am a lymphoma cancer survivor. The pain started after my chemotherapy. I also have neuropathy as residual effect of chemo. It is not a problem but I wonder if the pain is an indicator of any eminent health issue. Some expert doctor needs to look into these kind of symptoms. I would appreciate if someone has some adviser for me. Nitin

I am an osteopath and a male patient of mine has wrist pain when urinating. There is no neurological explanation that I can see - the Brachial plexus which serves the arms finishes at T1 (the base of your neck) and the nerves supplying the bladder start at around T10 (in the 'arch' of your back) - they are too far away from each other for there to be a connection. Many people have reported a link with arthritis or trauma (which can trigger arthritis) , or infection, and the logical explanation is that this is related to an abnormal blood chemistry-and that is where my knowledge ends -so a biochemist may be a useful contributer! Or Rhuematologist as diseases such as 'Reiters' share similar apparently unrelated symptoms.

PS - an Osteopathic explanation could include the changes in pressure as the pelvic cavity loses 600ml or so of urine and the pressure decreases, this could influence the pressure in the thoracic cavity whic, if the fascia is tight, could pull on the Brachial plexus giving arm/hand pain...just a thought...

Do any of the respondents happen to be taking iron supplements?  My mother has the hand pain described here and it started about the same time as she started taking the iron supplement. We are wondering if there is a connection.
