I noticed the last few days that the regular pain around my anus seems to be caused by two finger-shaped lumps protruding about a quarter inch from the outside. they're hard to the touch and everything feels swollen and uncomfortable. no blood in stool. are they hemmorrhoids or something else, and should I see a doctor?

Those are most definitely hemorrhoids! I wasn't entirely clear from your post though, are they on the inside or on the outside? I think that it would be a good idea to see a doctor about possible treatment. You may not need to consider surgery but there's gotta be something for you to do to help keep your pain from being as bad. Keep us posted, okay?
