About six months ago my boyfriend managed to talk me into experimenting with anal sex. It was very painful and unpleasant, but I kept doing it just to please him. About a month ago I discovered something strange on my anus. It feels like a small lump and it hurts, especially when I try to defecate. I’m pretty sure those are haemorrhoids. Is it possible that they are caused by anal sex? Should I stop with anal sex now? Is anal sex going to make things worse? I don’t know what to do; I’ve even come to like it and would be sorry to drop it.

The symptoms you described indicate the existence of haemorrhoids. They are actually dilated veins on your anus (those are positioned out) or in your anal canal (those are positioned inside and you can’t touch them). Haemorrhoids swell occasionally and can cause pain, itchiness or even bleeding. Anal sex does not cause haemorrhoids. However, penetration can aggravate the symptoms and even cause bleeding. This does not mean that you have to give up anal sex, you just have to be more careful and your partner more considerate. Tell him about your problem and try to figure out which is the most comfortable position for you (some people have better experiences when a person with haemorrhoids lies on his/her stomach rather than on the back). If you did not use condoms or lubricants now is the time to include those in your sex life. Lubricants should lessen the friction and pressure and, consequently, the risk of hurting yourself or causing pain.
