I just had my tonsils out 2 1/2 weeks ago. I am 26 and was also very nervous for the surgery after reading these posts. Let me just say that it is not that bad!!! I was up drinking and eating popsicle slushies within an hour of surgery. I am now back to work and normal life and have been for a week now. I feel great and would absolutely recommend the surgery! Here are some things that I found helpful.

Sleep with a humidifier..this helps your throat to stay moisturized so you do not wake up feeling like you ate sandpaper.

Drink LOTS of fluids...I was very paranoid about not drinking because they say that is what makes you bleed so I was drinking at least 64 oz of water and about the same of Gatorade from day 1. For me, the cold liquid felt good on my throat.

Have someone make you slushies. The nurse at the surgery center made me one and I was hooked. You just crush up a popsicle and put it in a cup with sprite and mix it together. Also, Sonic has these amazing ones called a Raspberry Cream Slush...I got one of those at least once a day.

Make sure you are eating at least some substance every day...This will help ease the effects of the pain medication on your stomach. I really liked cream of wheat and mashed potatoes. Also, do not be afraid to take your pain medicine regularly...that is why the doctor prescribes it.

Be sure to take as much time from work, school, etc as you can to recover. I took 2 full weeks and I could have come back earlier but I think taking it easy really helped. Don't push it!

Seriously, it is not that bad. The only real problem I have had is that ny taste buds have changed. I used to love diet coke and now I cannot stand it. Also, any milk product (ice cream, pudding, milk) tastes bad. The doctor says that this is pretty normal and that they should return to normal after the scabs are all gone. You will be fine...honestly, the worst part is watching other people eat normal food and wishing you could but the time goes by fast and you will be back in business before you know it. Good luck!!!

There is no getting away from the reality of the pain it does hurt but think of the future, no re-occuring tonsil problems. I am 28 and on day 10, its only the second day I have been out and and about. What you have got to remember is that everybody is different and everyone has different thresholds for pain.

I must admit the first two days I though to myself this is not as bad as I thought. Day 1: I ate pasta, sponge and custard had 3 cups of coffee. Weetabix for breakfast the following day and toast. Day 3: when I woke up I could not beleive the pain it was a shock compared to the previous 2 days. Don't get me wrong I could eat, but everything tasted awful and I had a really horrible taste in my mouth. Having said that I did have my favourite from the chinese on day 6 I could not eat that much and it did taste slightly different but by gosh I enjoyed it.

My recommendations would be stay ontop of your painkillers and anti-inflammatories (I set my alarm in case I missed them)

Take vaseline into the hospital with you for your lips (mine were so dry and sore after the op)

Drink plenty of water I was drinking at least a litre a day if not more THIS IS SOOOO IMPORTANT.

Avoid any milk based products (yogurts, chocolate, cheese milk in hot drinks) even ICE CREAM which everyone tells you to eat. It turns your saliva into a sticky mess that coats the back of your throat making it even mor difficult to breath. Water based lollies are good.

The main thing which I ate was well done toast, bread and butter and battered cod?

Good Luck with your op you will be fine it will be worth it in the long run.

I would say I agree with Crayshaw my tastebuds have also changed I was cappucino/coffee/tea mad and now I can't stand it, even the smell turns my stomach. I hope it returns soon though as I have a stash of choccie biccies waiting to be dunked!
