I have seen Drs the past 15 yrs since my car accident...numerous herniations. You may think all is okay and the Dr will always be there for you but NO. Sooner or later you won't have the meds and consequent withdrawals. VERY GOOD ADVISE is to start today with taking a little less and store up for when you really need them. REMEMBER my advise because 1 day you will think about it. One last thing, NEVER take Methadone...the most dangerous drug (2 close friends killed) and the WORST WITHDRAWAL ever.

I got hooked on morphine from a 'friend' who game me some for recreationall use. I was taking about 90mg a day for 4 months) took me a week to get through the worst of it and another week to get my head back to normal. I went cold turkey and had a week of diarrhea, aching legs, mood swings, depressio, the same things that you've all been going through, except I didn't have the pain that you were all suffering in the first place. I was an id**t who did'nt know any better.
As I look through the above stories it makes me so sad to think that the people who are taking it because they need it are stuck with having to deal with such awful withdrawl symptoms through no fault of their own, Some of you are on 400mg A DAY !! That is so sad to see.
I'd just like to say if you think of taking recreationally, DON'T !! Stay well away from it !!
Best of luck to you all, you WILL get through it, It is hard but you can do it.
Stay strong people :)

First of all let me say I use Morphine Sulfate ER 30MG 2 times a day for chronic back pain resulting from a construction accident and have no idea how long withdrawals will last when trying to quit cold turkey. Several years ago I was using 25 MCG/hr. Fentynal patches for my pain and my pain level was still at 7-8 on a scale of 10, so I told my Dr. at the pain clinic I didn't think the patches were doing any good. He prescribed me one 25 MCG/hr. patch and told me to leave it on for 6 days. Even before the patch fell off after about 4 days my pain level had increased to a 10, but I didn't make another appointment with the pain clinic until my regular appointment a month later. I went through withdrawals for that whole month aching all over with hot flashes and cold sweats and a pain level of 10 and stayed in the bed about 23 hours a day for a month because, I couldn't sit up longer for the back pain. When I went back to the Dr. I told him the patches were doing more good than I had originally thought so I went back on them until they quit doing my back pain any good then he switched me off of the patches onto Morphine Sulfate 30 MG 3 times a day which I stayed on for a few years until I finally found a chiropractor that was able to help me. After seeing the chiropractor for a few months my pain level decreased and I was able to wean myself down to 2 30 MG Morphine Sulfate ER a day without any withdrawals. The way I weaned myself off of the 3rd tablet was by increasing the time between dosages by 30 minutes-1 hour at a time until I was down to 2 pills a day. I tryed to wean myself down further, but couldn't do it because of the back pain. I know my withdrawal experience from the Fentynal patches is not what anyone wants to hear that's trying to get off Morphine, but I can tell you it can be done cold turkey but i have no idea how long it will last. I did it for a month with a back pain level of 10. I am currently trying to lengthen the time between my Morphine doses again and am currently at 13 hours instead of 12 hours as prescribed. I've been doing this for about a month allowing my body to get accustom to it and am soon going to see if my back pain will allow me to go 13.5 hours between doses. To anyone trying to kick Morphine addiction, especially those who don't need it for pain, stick with it. It's better to be in pain for a short period of time than ruin your whole life being addicted to something you don't need. I too suggest a good support group and a relationship with Jesus as your personal savior. Give it to God he can help with anything. Good luck and hang in there. I am hoping my back pain will someday improve to the point I can come completely off Morphine, because I never wanted to go on it in the first place, but my only other choice was living with a constant pain level in the 8-10 range which I did for a few years before finally giving in to needing narcotics to help reduce the pain. Trying to live with the back pain without narcotics ended up causing me to become severly depressed and suicidal so for me Morphine was the better choice. Again good luck to all!!

My name is Jason. Very similar story with back pain from being a workaholic. Been on pain medicine for 7 years now and just coming off of it. Today is my 3 rd day and I feel like I'm dying. The stomach pains and cold sweats, aching sooo bad everywhere. I can't stand pills, and I'm not an addict type personality. But your body gets so dependent after 7 years of it. I'm sitting in a bath tub trying to soak and not shake hard so I can write this. I know I'll get thru it tho. I have a wife of 17 years and three boys. I just want to be able to play with them again. It's so hard when your soar and tiered all the time.
Thanks for writing your story. It helped me just to know others go thru this. I pray u get better and can stay off them and stay healthy!!
God bless,
Jason Jura.

I'm feeling you. My case is actually different. I have never abused my morphine. But I got really sick for 2 1/2 week's and ever time I threw up my morphine can back. So I had to take another b/c of the pain. Now I have a week before I can get my prescription. I feel so bad and have nothing to help me. I was thinking of going to the hospital but I'm afraid they won't believe me. Then I might lose my Dr of 7 years. I don't know what to do.

I was using 290mg a day due to severe sciataca pain and upper disk problems. After a year I had cut down to 30mg. I was only taking the IR's after that so over the last two months I broke them in half then to quarters etc. and now I am two days off them completely. So far not so bad. I had suffered, and still do sometimes. It never was severe because I slowly did it. I developed RLS and cold like symptoms, headaches, diarrhea, body ached, nause, etc. it's not as bad as it sounds. It wasn't a constant thing, just the first week was a little rough. I was tired of being treated like a criminal at pharmacies and pain management doctor. It took me over a year but I feel better for it now. I just need to figure out what to do about the pain. I am waiting for medical marijuana to be legalized in my state.
Good luck to whoever reads this.

"I was tired of being treated as a criminal at pharmacies and pain management doctor." I hear you, I've felt like sinking into a hole more than once when being confronted by a physician, pharmacist or enquiring nurses. Last time I was hospitalized for pneumonia, they reduced the morphine to 30mg, (from 120mg daily) and waited to see how long it took for me to go into withdrawal symptoms. They did this over and over for a period of 24 hours, finally coming up their new dosage, 120 mgs daily. So for their enjoyment, they watched me withdraw 4 times. Whatever happened to "Cause no pain?"
