Hi! I have cataract on my eye. Soon I will go to surgery. I didn’t ask my eye doctor anything about this procedure and now I want to ask somebody with experience few things. I’m wondering how long does cataract operation take and how painful can it get? Do I need total anesthesia? Thanks!

The cataract surgery doesn’t take very long. Usually about an hour but sometimes it may takes only twenty minutes. It depends of many things. I had one and everything was done for a half an hour. And it does not hurt at all. Only there may be minor pain during the healing process. You will get a local anesthesia.

It usually takes between 15 and 30 mins. They give you local anaesthetic and so you shouldnt feel any pain during the procedure. After the operation, you may get a "foreign body" sensation for a day or so afterwards but no major pain involved.
There is a video of the procedure on the link below (if you are not too squeemish).
