I have had a revelation of sorts.
I am really new to running, since August. I got really sick in October and have had to fight my way back to running. I had one or two really good runs around that time, but since then, every run has been tough. From the shortest to my longest--which hasn't been long at all.
It hit me last night after I left the gym, feeling really good for the first time in a long time, I haven't had a runner's high since October. All of my runs have been difficult and a struggle. After my runs, rather than feeling that release, the elation of the run, I just feel beat up. Last night was my first good run! I felt great and am ready to go again. After the run, I felt awesome!
Is it perhaps that I pushed myself too hard too fast after being sick?
How often do you get that "conquer the world" feeling?

Very well could be. After a few days or more off, whether sick or not, it usually takes me several runs to get back into it. I tend to push myself a bit harder when I first come back, it just takes me a few runs to realize that my body isn't ready for that yet. Easing back in is the best thing you can do.
How often do you get that "conquer the world" feeling?
I had several of those during the Feb event, but it helped that I was running pretty much every other day. I'll be having more of those as my mileage increases leading up to Madison. I tend to get them more after longer, slower runs, or races. I think most may get it after a hard workout, or setting a pr.

The really incredible "runner's highs" when you feel awesome and don't want to stop ever, never come as often as you like.
You were probably just getting your legs back under you, that's all. I don't think you were pushing hard, just the fact that you were pushing at all made it difficult.

Me too. Airhead, I think you're doing well. As far as runner high goes, I usually feel it only the last mile of the long runs (and not every long run) because that's when my body is tired and feeling the run so the endorphins kick in! I get kind of giddy. :wiggle:

For me it seems to be when everything is lined up right. Certain days the dice come up where enough sleep, the right nutrition, the weather, the shoes, the attitude, loose legs, and then the miles just slide on by with an effortless feeling. The few times it happens on raceday... look out

Yeah, Prs and the "My body can't stop!" feelings are great. Really though, after EVERY run I feel 'cleansed' and that's enough for me!
