I have a septate hymen and it really bothers me.. its where theres a thin fleshy hymen in the center of the vaginal opening, rite down the center from the top to the bottom... iam sexually active but my hymen hasnt ruptured yet, it just got pushed over to the side, which i always wondered why i never bled when i had sex now i know why, because i never ruptured the hymen...using tampons have been a pain before because when ive tried to take them out they get caught in the septate hymen n then i have to move it over off of the tampon so i can get it out...anyways..i just wanted to know if anyone had ever had a hymenectomy and how its done, if it can be done in a dr's office with a simple procedure or if its an actual surgury like where ur put to sleep for...id really appreciate some feedback..thanks !

If anyone looks at this post in the future for information, I just wanted to say that I had the same problem (tampons getting caught, painful paps, etc.), except sex was very painful. I never heard of the condition before and went through a lot of uneccesary pain, worry, and stress as to what could be wrong. My gyno didn't even realize anything was unusual until I finally got the nerve to bring it up. She told me to get a hymenectomy, and things have been fine since then. The surgery and recovery were quick, and I wish there was more information on the topic for others who may have the same problem.

Also, just for anyone who is looking for info. because that's how I initially got info about my little situation : )
I just had a hymenectomy... this week! I had a septate hymen. I hadn't known that mine was different; I thought everyone's was that way. It's not normal, but it is not uncommon. I had a hard time getting tampons out, but I never thought it was something I should mention. Not until I became sexually active, did it become a problem. It did not break initially, but definitely got in the way and caused pain. Sure enough it eventually broke, and not in the middle of the strand of flesh of course, but on one end. So it hung down further. I was a newly wed and totally embarrassed about it.
But the procedure can be simple. If it is fully attached on either end, it will likely need to be done in the OR and you'll be put under. I had to go to the hospital for the procedure and I'm glad. I wouldn't have wanted to be conscious for it. It's healing. Slowly, it seems, because I can't have sex with my husband until it does (at least two weeks). But it doesn't hurt at all, just a little swollen feeling. I'm really glad I did it though. It's a small boost to my confidence, but that's one area you can use all the confidence you can get.
