I had bunions removed and hammertoes corrected on toes 4 & 5 on both feet. The surgeries were 3 weeks apart. I was in a lot of pain and discomfort. I almost didn't get the 2nd surgery done (but I would have looked deformed with one straight foot). It is 4 months later for the first surgery and I am still going to therapy, still having pain in the big toe, my toes are just beginning to bend, I have only been in a flat shoe for about 3 weeks (not all day & I had to buy a bigger size), and I am still limited to my walking, bending, and lifting.
I don't recommend the surgery unless you absolutely have to have it. My swelling is just going down, I have some swelling but not much by the end of the day. This surgery has really limited my lifestyle longer than I had expected and planned for (I took off work for 2.5 months). I still have to do toe exercises, ice packs, electric stimulous, and elavating of the feet. I have even gained about 20 pounds because I am not as physically active as before, however, my appetite has not suppressed.
Maybe, I'll have a different opinion once I am completely heeled. I am living proof that everyone heels differently. I have done everything that the doctor and therapist said, yet I am still having lots of problems and I at times wake up with pain.
DONT' DO IT....

I had hammertoe surgery done under a local and they removed the bones out of toe #4 & #3 and straightened the #5 (the little toe) and I did not have any pain at all! It's unbelievable! It has been 2 weeks and I saw the doctor to have a few stitches removed and he re-wrapped the 3 toes and I'm wearing an ugly open-toe shoe and walking on the heel of the foot where the surgery took place. The toes are straight and look great! They're a bit bruised but they're not curled at all! I'm having my other 3 toes done on my other foot in two weeks and am looking forward to it! It's worth it..have it done if you need it! Do it under a local and you'll be fine! I hope to be walking normal in about a month or at least at the beginning of April when I may be able to wear open-toe shoes!!!!
