I have been abusing paracetamol on a regular basis for a couple of months now. On average, between 12-16 a day, never less than 8, once 20. I had a blood test when I was taking 12 a day, and the results came back ok. When I went up to 16 a day, it made a huge difference to the results and the gp told me I needed to cut it back down to 12, or ideally 8 or below. Trouble is, I'm back up to 16 a day. Saw a psych and awaiting support from a CPN, have been for 3 weeks. Just wondered how much longer I can go on for like this, and what is likely to happen if I don't stop. Thanks.
How is it that you can be abusing paracetamol, which is the same thing as Tylenol? It is not addictive. You cannot get high from it. Sounds like a serious psycological problem.

Regardless, I don't know why you aren't dead already. And I certainly don't understand why your GP told you to cut back when he should be telling you to STOP. If you are in that much pain (I can only assume you started taking them for some sort of pain) your doctor should have prescribed a real pain medication.

Why should you be dead? Because paracetamol is highly toxic to the liver in the doses you say you are taking. You should at the very least be in excruciating pain from the doses you claim to be taking.

STOP NOW OR DIE.

i'm with TheGeeze on this one - paracetamol can cause liver failure die to the toxins it produces in high amounts (which is what you are taking)!

if you are in pain switch to something else - if the dr won't give you anything try ibuprofen or aspirin (but then you have to be careful due to stomach ulcers!)

why are you taking so many paracetamol tablets??? they arent great painkillers at best of time!?!?!

Hi, thanks for your replies. Been a hard few months. Still battling with the same problem. I don't take them for pain relief, it's very complex and part of it is for self harm. Yes I do have psychological problems. Trying really hard to work with profs. Had a couple of hospital admissions for treatment on IV. Got a lot more support now, so hopefully I'll be able to come back in a few more months and post something positive. Don't understand how I can keep getting away with it. Took 24 Thursday as things got on top of me and I'd had enough, and the doc said my results were normal. Sends me wrong message. Sos, not sure this is the place to talk like this. Thanks for listening anyway.

I realize it's been a whole year, but, i had a friend that tried to kill herself and took 32 x 500mg tablets in one go. She started frothing from the mouth and was admitted to hospital but recovered after a week.
When you take paracetamol it is converted to a toxic metabolic and then the enzymes in the liver take care of the it.
When there are too many toxic metabolics for the enzymes to break down they can start to damage the liver and the liver will begin to fail.
Once the the liver fails, it can't be repaired. The first symptoms of liver failure are Nausea, Loss of appetite, Fatigue and Diarrhoea.

The amount you take would certainly be making you feel much more depressed and it would be placing alot of stress of your body.
I suggest, start going for an exhausting nightly run before bed, to help you fall asleep easier.
Start eating really healthy, lots of nuts and beans and sesame seeds. And try to fix whats making you sad rather than going around it.
No doubt there is alot of built up emotion just waiting to come out, you need to know how to get it out.
screaming at the top of your lungs and meditating every morning and be a really good de-stress. Just do things one step at a time.

You are in a great place to talk. Looks like a lot of people really care about you. Do you feel suicidal when you take the tylenol?
Can you let your psych. doc know how much you are taking.

Please keep talking with us. You have some people who care.

If you take paracetamol daily basis you are more likely to get side effects such as skin rash and it can affect your blood. Paracetamol can be dangerous at the times as well but that depends how much you take it and eventually it can lead to death.
I am glad i helped you out. :)
