I've gathered that they're common with piercings and I've have my ears pierced before but I've let my holes close since them and I still get these little balls in my ears and they hurt when I mess with them. What are they; and is there anything I can do to make them stop?

They are very normal! I have them too. Your ears healed the holes themselves by producing scar tissue which is what you are feeling. Its nothing to be concerned about!
