Hello. I am wondering if you had any success with the bentonite, slippery elm and psyllium husks mixture you posted about? Are you fully off Imodium? Is there anything else you are doing?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

For all you with diarrhea that might be due to bile acid malabsorption I highly recommend Cholestyramine.  It is effective, safe and can be taken for long term without the possible side effects imodium may have.

Good luck!

Know exctly what your goin thru, take It everyday as well, yes it is w/draw bcuz immodium is an actual opioid so yes u will endure wiithdraws when quitting(u can google loperamide being an opioid and u can read about it).U have to taper off immodium when quitting. I was a heavy vicodin user and used immodium to help with w/draws from it and have same symptoms of withdraws after quitting the immodium as I did with the vics, so I was basically in a lose/lose situation! I'm trying to taper the imm. Now and its hard to do as well :( hope evrything goes well 4 u though. Let me know if u google that and I hope u get the answers u r looking for.

Wow, I'm pleased to find this information although it is a bit frightening. I have been taking 6-8 Immodium a day for a year after having had my colon removed due to severe ulcerative colitis. I recently went off it about a month ago because I had had severe cramps from taking iron supplements due to anemia. I started developing shaky hands, muscle spasms in my arms and legs, did not realize the link and started searching the internet. Never thought of searching for Immodium withdrawal b/c did not consider it really "medicine" after having taken so many prescription meds for so long. Finally searched today and this is precisely the symptoms I was experiencing -- diarrhea, shakiness, body aches etc. I don't care what the 'studies' say about the blood brain barrier, this must be true at least for some, b/c it is too coincidental IMO that I experienced all these symptoms in conjunction with stopping the medicine without having known these were side effects.

Have the ingredients of Immodium changed? I cleared out my medicine cabinet yesterday and threw out an old packet of Immodium after seeing that it contained lactose. I used to be ok with lactose, but now have an allergic reaction (beyond intolerance) to it. As a result, that old packet (other than being past its expiry date anyway) is no longer safe for me.

It may be that the ingredients have changed since I bought that packet, but for all you people who are lactose intolerant or lactose allergic, I would suggest checking the ingredients of the packs that you have.

I know this was posted ages ago, but did the Imodium help with the withdrawal?

I take 3-4 pills every 2 days. On a bad day, I take up to 5. Without it, I'm sorry, but I wouldn't leave the house. I eat healthy, I try to stay healthy, but I don't have a gall bladder. It's embarrassing going out to a celebratory dinner with the family and every 2 bites having to run to the bathroom (honest.)
I've gained weight since I started taking Imodium, but I've also hit menopause early. I'm only 25. I know I'm young, but I have anxiety issues of having to go in public. Most people do.
For me, Imodium is a lifeline. Without it, I wouldn't function. I'd stay at home, make sure the bathroom stayed unoccupied as much as possible, and stay away from most activities that require me to be somewhere else in the house that wasn't closest to the bathroom. Which mostly meant sitting on my ass and reading on the couch nearest the bathroom door.
When I don't take Imodium, I shut myself in, I get anxiety attacks, I get headaches, I get sick, and I get pretty messed up.
My husband knows to have a back-up supply of at least 12 pills at any given time between paychecks, and a spare bottle of 72 in the van.
Honestly, I don't care about the side-effects anymore. I'd rather just not confront my worst fears and c**p myself in public. Maybe that's just me.

I've been an iv heroin user for three years. I went to a detox center 4 weeks ago for seven days. I was on suboxone the whole seven days. It was four days off of suboxone and four days out of detox and i was detoxing still and someone said to take immodium to get rid of all symptoms. I was actually pissed that someone was " so stupid" to recommend this. Iimmodium doesn't even cross the blood brain barrior! But I was willing to try anything. I started off with ten, waited an hour, took thirteen more...waited two, three hours felt nothing. I was mad. Then about six hours later I realized I was fine. Like fine. I was dying six hours earlier. I've been taking thirty plus for two weeks and have not experienced any detox symptoms minus fatigue and insomnia. I began to think the immodium wasn't needed, duh I felt fine. I stopped taking it and twenty four hours in I was back to full detox like before. I was shocked. I took thirty and six hours later again fine. I've repeated this cycle five times and now feel that I'm physically dependent on something shitty. Oh and every three days I have to drink two bottles of milk of magnesia to avoid bowl impactment.

The silver can also be toxic in large amounts and it can turn your skin silver. I have seen it happen to one of my patients.

If you need to take Immodium as I have. My specialist suggested starting on a high dose single probiotic capsule and to use a daily dose of Metamucil in place of the Immodium. As I was instructed the Metamucil will help with diarrhea relief by bulking up your stool and slowing the process down similar to the Immodium capsules. Only the Metamucil or similar product is healthier on your bowel and GI system plus has a healthy benefit if taken in low dosage along with a good daily probiotic for achieving that good flora balance many of us loose through prescriptions we need to ingest. Best discuss this with your GP to see if it fits your condition.

Loperamide which is in Imodium is an opiate. I take at least 48-96 every two days. That crosses the blood barrier really quick and gives me a very Vicodin like effect. Quite pleasant and helps with my back pain. Withdrawals do come with it though especially at such high doses. I also have plenty of fiber in my diet because trust me, it will cause constipation and you wont go poo for a day or 2 at high doses unless you have a lot of fiber. Also be sure to drink plenty of fluids if taken at high doses.

Recently I spoke with a doctor about my 'poos' and how when I'm stressed its like an immediate reaction... she prescribed hydroxizine (very mild anti anxiety- not a benzo and not addictive!) for this... there is a name for it too: paristaltic rush. good luck! (btw, i still use immodium too... but i need it less now. :)

Kate you are entirely wrong.

You are also very wrong in assuming that because it doesn't pass the BBB that it isn't addictive.

It might not affect brain chemistry, but as someone hooked on 60 a day of these things, I can certainly tell you that they are 100% addicting. They are absorbed in the gut, they slow down peristalsis and your body becomes addicted to it. When I don't take it, I get opiate withdrawal symptoms in spades.

This coming from a man who stopped taking a LOT of methadone cold turkey.

I think this could really be something to sue over as it isn't noted anywhere that it is addictive and Im up-hauled! I've taken hydro condone, oxycodone, methadone, fentanyl, heroin, any opiate I could get my hands on for over 12 yrs and wen u stop opiates you get horrible withdrawal symptoms, the same ones you do when u quit immodium. BUT our medical staff will tell us everytime that Loperamide isn't addictive and won't cause withdrawals! NOT TRUE! It will cause ou to have the exact same withdrawal symptoms as opiates and there is no warning of this ANYWHERE?! I think it's pure BS as when I quit opiates I used Immodium/Loperamide and was convinced it was completely non-addictive. It just pisses me off that I used something to combat a problem and when I thought it was helping the situation it was only making my misery worse in the long run. I read that it was an opiate but doesn't cross the BBB so it won't cause psychoactive effects/withdrawals, but that's not true it does.... So whats everyone else's thoughts on this?
