Hi, just a general wondering about herpes transmission. Does the virus die on skin like it does on inanimate objects when it is exposed to oxygen? Here are the details: I went to meet my fiances family last week, and his grandmother had an open cold sore on her mouth (in the crusting phase). She said goodbye to him with several kisses on the cheek, and a few hours later I forgot and was kissing him in the same area that had been exposed to the lesion. After a few hours, would the virus still be active enough to be contagious? Or would it have died like it was on any other surface?

Please help. Thank you!

In this situation, It sounds as if the cold sore would only be transmitted from his grandmother, to your fiance, to you, if she kissed an open wound on his face and then he kissed an open wound on your face!
