I have a bad infection in the salivary gland and am scheduled for surgery next month. how well can I cope after it is removed and what should I expect and what is recovery time?

Hi. Are you sure it's just an infection of salivary gland? Because surgery is usually not the option for the infection. Any infection could be treated with antibiotics or other medication, depending on what caused the infection, bacteria, virus or something else.

Surgery is recommended as a treatment option only in case you have stones in your salivary duct, a condition called Sialolithiasis.

However, surgery is not the only solution for this condition. You may ask your dentist or oral surgeon to perform manual manipulation and to squeeze and push the stone out of duct. Only if this isn't possible, a surgical incision is recommended as a method of removal stones from salivary gland. If not possible to remove just stone, then removal of the whole salivary gland is recommended.

You may live with stones in your salivary gland untreated, but that may lead to further complications.
