My grandmother is 77 and recently went to the hospital. She was coughing up blood. The found a mass on her lung. She has never smoked before. But, we can't figure out why they are going through nose? My question is why are they going through her nose and is it necessarly cancer?

Your physician needed to rule out bleeding from the nose which could have voided blood into the mouth to be coughed up later. Many non-smokers get lung cancer due to second-hand smoke.
