Hi, my friend seams to have a problem. I met him at work and at the beginning I did not think that there was anything wrong wit him but now my opinion has changed. It seams that he has low self-esteem. Also, he thinks he is lower in every way from the others. He always criticizes himself. I talked to a lot of people about him. One mentioned that he suffers from dysthmia. Is this dysthmia?

Hi, you might be right. Dysthmia is a mild form of depression. Person suffering from this condition functions normally but has a low opinion of him. During the time, this person becomes socially withdrawn and isolated. This happens mostly because their inability to enjoy social relationship pleasures. A very large percentage of people with dysthmia are not even aware of the condition that they have. Usually they seek comfort in alcohol and drugs. Most of them end their life with suicide without even realizing that this condition is curable. There are only guesses what causes dysthmia since this condition is mentally related and therefore is complex. The important thing is that it is treatable with the help of medications, cognitive and interpersonal therapy. You should talk to your friend and try to convince him to seek professional help.
