I just had my Mirena taken out today, because my husband and I want to try for another baby again, and when I was in to see the doctor I told her of some issues I have been having ever since it was put in place 3 1/2 years ago. Basically, I have had a yeast infection for 3 1/2 years, with chunky white discharge that occurs around the time of ovulation, but I never thought anything of it since it would clear on it's own (just to come back teh next month). A couple of times I tried Monostat, but no change was noted. Even worse, for 3 1/2 years I have been experiencing vaginal cuts and tears just beneath the vaginal opening. They weren't deep, but man did they hurt. Knowing full well that I or my husband were completely clean, I was convinced that this was something that I contracted while giving birth to my daughter. Anyway, when I told my doctor all of this today, she informed me that what has been going on for the past 3 1/2 years (ever since I got my Mirena) was a constant yeast infection, and then informed me that Monostat does not work on every kind of yeast infection, which is why I haven't been able to get rid of it. Hopefully all of my problems go away now that the Mirena is out. My doctor also gave me a strong, 2 dose, perscription for the yeast infection, so I'm crossing my fingers that my days of pain and discomfort will be behind me from now on.

I completely AGREE. I had NEVER had BV prior to my iud being placed and had suffered from a yeast infection maybe twice in my life.
A few months after the mirena was placed I started having monthly yeast infections. A few months after that CONTINUOUS BV started --- both infections return within days of being treated. I am VERY frustrated that these side effects / problems are not better documented by doctor's and BAYER.
FURIOUS would be a better description.
I am calling my doctor immediately to have the device remoived. I will have to find another form of birth control. I need my body to get back to its old self.

My dr said he didnt know if the mirena caused infections. I wish they could figure out what to do for this.. I believe this is the best form of protection. I dont have periods anymore and that is great. And i would have it taken out but i havent even paid for it yet and the cost is about 700.00 to 1000.00 who can afford to do that... well i just though i would put my 2 cents in.. thanks lady's for post your experience with the mirena!!!!

Hi Everyone!
I posted months ago about my problems I was having with the Mirena. Im 25 yrs old and I had the mirena for almost two yrs. so for two yrs. I was constantly dealing with itchiness, burning, abdominal pain and when I had intercourse it was uncomfortable and I always had an odor. I would go to the docs and get meds for a yeast infection or I would try to cure it myself with over the counter stuff and it seemed like it was back in just a few days. It was to the point that I was starting to wonder if it was something I was going to have to deal with for the rest of my life. It started a few months after it was inserted. I kept saying I was going to have it removed but at the same time I liked the fact that I didn't have to take a pill everyday, or get on the depo which caused me to gain weight in the past. I also thought it was great because I couldn't get pregnant....or at least I thought. I had been on it for almost two yrs. before I said "enough is enough" I went to the doctors to have it removed and to get medicine for this constant infection. To make a long story short I found out I was pregnant, they removed the mirena and told me there was a good chance I could miscarry by them taking it out, but it is safer for me if they do take it out. I was also told they cant give me any meds for the infec. because I'm pregnant. So I had to deal with it, but because I had yeast so long I ended up with a UTI too. Anyways two wks. after the removal I had a miscarriage, and about a 2 wks after that I went to the docs and got a pill for my yeast infection and (knock on wood) I have not had any odor, itchiness, burning,or excessive discharge for over a month. I almost forgot what it felt like to feel normal down there. I'm glad I'm back to normal again lol and I hope I helped some of you. Good luck...and my opinion would be to have it removed if your having the same issues that I was having.

So, I've only had the Mirena for maybe 2 months but this bacterial infection or BV has me out on the internet looking to see if Im the only one. I hate these because just as all ya'll have atested to, the smell is so disturbing and makes me so uncomfortable. I too am a very clean person and pride myself on smelling good, which I ususally do! I work out a few times a week and I have noticed that when I do this, the smell seems to intensify!! I can't take it. And I have finished my gel medication for the infection, but I still am noticing that 'rotton' smell. I am thinking about having it removed as well. I may opt to get my tubes tied since I am done having kids.
I am glad that its not just me.. hang in there ladies!

I had Mirena for 18 months and it's been horrible. The first time I was diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis I thought it was just like getting yeast infection... you get it... you treat it and it goes away for a long time. But then I keep getting it every month, going back to the doctor and getting the same infection. I asked the doctor if it could be my Mirena and she said no. She said it could be stress, diet or the soap I'm using or the underwear, I'm wearing, I didn't believe her because I have never had this infection and I haven't change anything in the way I eat or the clothes I wear.. So then I thought maybe my body is just getting used to the Mirena, so I was going to at least give it a year but it didn't get better, instead it got worse. I would get it often sometimes twice a month. I talked to a friend who had it longer than I have and she eventually gave up because it never got better so she had it pulled out. I took her advice and had mine taken out today. I'm going back to Nuva Ring so I can have a normal sex life.
Good Luck Ladies!!!
