Hello, my 7 yr old daughter has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (juvenile I think). It’s only been a week, so I am not sure what to do. I don’t know anyone whose kid had diabetes and it seems that there are no kids in her class either. Is there any book, forum…or whatever where I can inform more about juvenile diabetes? Any help and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am always disturbed when I hear that kids are ill. I wanted to help you so I asked my neighbor. She is diabetic since she was 11 years old. A large part of her life she was on insulin. She told me that you should only follow the advice of your endocrinologist as far as diet goes with a newly diagnosed, or any type 1 diabetic goes, for that matter. A type 1’s patient (juvenile) does tend to lose weight very quickly and cutting out certainly nutritional needs can even stunt their growth. Please, please only follow a medical doctor's advice! At least before you start any particular diet for a type 1 diabetic.

Dear vann,

This is different, but probably you child has had rheumatic fever and the diabetes was just a sequelae. Nowadays, few doctors know anything about rheumatic fever, but it has been in a resurgence since the '80's when it first recurred in Salt Lake City and then was discovered all over the USA. It has many presentations: kids can just have shoulder pain, low back pain, tonsillitis, episodes of strep throat, flu-like diseases, etc. Often, I think, a child can have a flu-like disease and then later, maybe weeks to years later develop diabetes.

Other endocrine organ problems can also develop.

OK. if you read this you probably have dealt with the problem for some time so if you want to chat drop me aline.

Yours, Norsk10
