I feel the same thing when I get up in the morning the pain goes away in like five minutes. What did your doctor say was the cause of this ?

Thanks so much for the info! I had a hunch that caffeine was related to this morning kidney pain, but I'm so addicted to coffee and chocolate that I didn't try to stop for even one day. I kept postponing because I had the excuse of not knowing if it's true or not :) Now that you've confirmed the link, it will be much easier to find the will to cut back on caffeine!

I definitely think you made a discovery here. I have a genetic condition that depletes my vitamin d and I need a prescription strength vitamin to keep it up. Came here to try to figure this out and your post made me realize that I haven't had my vitamin since losing my insurance and there is a good possibility this is what is going on for me. Thanks!

Very helpful post! It makes sense...I haven't been hydrating much lately because of my new job's demands, and the left kidney pain started just recently too. I will certainly make a point to drink more water. I also started excercising recently too.

I found that sitting up and not rising immediately will allow the kidney to get into an upright position, if I get up quickly, within the first minute, I will experience sharp pains in my side.

I get this aswell doctors just fob me off, I noticed that if I drank a cup of tea before bed it would most definatly hurt at 4/5am but when I dnt it hurts a little but not as much, if I drink a glass of water before bed it seems to stop it happening, I also have a vitamin d defiency, possibly related, and I try to go for a wee before bed.

Wow, I can't believe so many other people have this same problem. I'm 26 and have had this problem for quite a while now. At least 3 years.
I also have a history of recurrent kidney infections, some of which have hospitalised me, although they've become less frequent in the past year, but I'm still getting this kidney pain on waking. It happens 99% of the time. I wake in the morning needing to urinate and I have this awful pain in my kidneys. I feel it both sides, but left is worse. When I got to the toilet, it alleviates some of the pain, but it persists throughout the morning and leaves my kidneys feel as if they're bruised, before it fully dissipates. Sometimes it is so severe it wakes me in the night and I will be on the verge of tears.
I found the comment about vitamin D interesting as I do have a vitamin D deficiency although that problem is a lot more recent due to breastfeeding.
