For the past four days, I've developed large, sore bumps at the base of the back of my neck. They have increased in number and size each day. I also have an enlarged and very sore gland that runs down the back of my left ear which goes all the way down my neck. They are so sore that I can't lay on my left side or back at night to sleep. When I tip my head to either side, it is extremely painful either from the pressure of squeezing the left side or pulling (when I tip my head to the right). The bumps at the base of my neck (three of them now) constantly hurt when my hair is in a ponytail and when I brush my hair. Finally, my voice is horse when speaking and I have a minor sore throat along with a low-grade fever (under 101) that comes and goes.

What are these lumps? Where did they come from? How long should I wait before seeing my doctor? Is there any relief from the pain? I have been taking ibuprofen every four hours (800 mg) to try to help the pain as well as the fever.

Any advice would be helpful.

It sounds like you have swollen lymph nodes, as far as the lumps go. The rest of the symptoms you're listing are common to have alongside them, as well. It's something that's usually alleviated with prescribed antibiotics after a week or so. Recovery rate from this type of thing varies wildly without antibiotics; in some people it lasts a few days, in some it can last a few months.
