My beloved wife died 1 month ago at age 55. She had Type 1 Diabetes since she was 9. She literally went through hell over the last 2 years. 2.5 years ago everything seemed normal and we had a good life, even though she had to manage her diabetes and take insulin. But she ate healthy and never drank much alcohol. 2 years ago she started getting pains in her legs when walking. This never healed. A while later her legs stopped functioning altogether. She couldn't stand up, or walk, or go to the toilet on her own. Nothing. At the same time her stomach stopped working and she could only eat liquid foods like yoghurt. After 9 months of that she started getting black sores on her toes and the amputations started. First a big toe - that didn't heal. Then the lower leg - that didn't heal. Then the upper leg - that healed. Then the other big toe - that didn't heal. Then the other leg. A while after that she got multiple bouts of pneumonia in the hospital. Finally, just when she was about to go into a nursing home she suffered a massive blood-clot in the brain and was destroyed mentally as well as physically. And until that point her mind was the only thing she had left. 6 weeks after that she died. All this in just 2 years, before which we lived a seemingly normal and happy married life.
I'm so sorry for ur loss. My brother is going through this now and came out to this post. All the amputations starting makes me think how much more time I have with him...

My 58 year old mother which whom is also a diabetic Has been in the hospital for 4 months .she was complaining to her foot MAD of burning and pain unbearable pain he continued to treat her for different issues which scraping and putting acid on the soles .well last week she needed both feet right
and left , amputied ..3inches from the heel . its a struggle . my cconcerns are many but one im most afraid of is the.depression I heard that some Amputies face this.my mom is also bipolar and has depression must of her life.I am scared for her and anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

I am sharing my wife's experience. She is Diabetic for many years, She is on insulin for many years.Twelve years back her kidneys got affected. Due to one expert Doctor the kidneys were almost recovered in two years span.. Twenty months back due to
negligence in eating habits Gangrene erupted in her leg toe. Due to this and also not approaching Doctor immediately her middle finger of the toe was amputed.. Since then she is obeying medical advice from the Doctor. Now there are no visual signs of other damage. Last year, she suffered from pain in legs while walking.Doctor advised her to use special sports shoes while walking and now she is regularly walking for 25 minutes daily. she now do not have any other problems.Her veins in the leg must have got affected to some extent but this is not preventing her from living happily.
How is your mom doing now? My mom is in her early 60's and she is going through the same thing. She has a sever infection in her left leg and it has started to turn gangrene and they are telling her she has to have her whole leg amputated. She is devasted and depressed that she doesn't want to live anymore.
Thank you for sharing these comments. My dad is also a diabetic. 83 yrs old. Just found it he has gangrene in two is his toes. Going to the dr. tomorrow to talk about the amputation. I'm so nervous for him. He seems devastated about it.

If you are a real physician you are supposed to encourage a patient not give a patient a grim outlook and no hope and that is exactly what your article does and you are IDIOTS IN MY OPINION YOU ARE BASICALLY TELLING PATIENTS THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO SURVIVE....you should be giving HOPE not DISPARAGE THEM I know more people that have had Diabetic Amputations and they are all still alive and well after many many years ....WHAT ASSHOLES YOUALL ARE !!!!!!!°
my dad age 76 had his leg amputated a week ago due to diabetic and gangrene, weight 130kg never exercised ate what ever comes his way insulin not on a daily basis .has other health issues . what is his chances of survival in the first year .
Male, 87, diabetic, severe, decides NOT to have foot (below knee) amputated. What happens next? We know death will follow, but how long, symptoms etc.?
