Hi All,
I have one screw and it will stay in unless I can't stand to leave it there. I do not have fusion that I am aware of. My GP has a total of eight screws in his foot and ankle and plans on keeping seven in.
Hope you do better, DIXI! Oh, and about the shoes. I am a music director and must be up in front of audiences. We live in a day when we can get away with being more comfortable in our clothes and shoes and still looking nice. If others don't understand, let them try to "walk" a mile in our feet. Get a picture of your foot with the screws in it (good to have anyway if you plan to fly!) and show anyone who tries to give you grief. SAS ladies' mocs are not only comfortable but can also look somewhat dressy depending on the colors. I bought gold ones to wear to my daughter's wedding seven years ago, gun metal ones for my older son's wedding, and one black one on one foot with a soft cast and surgical shoe on the other at my other son's wedding last year.
Is HizGrace still out there? How are you getting along? Are you partial weightbearing?

Hi Fusion and Musictch!
I hope you are both doing well. I’m glad to know about the screws Fusion, my doctor told me I’d just have some tightness when I stand flat and that should be basically be my level of awareness, and with what your saying, hopefully he’s right! It’s just weird to think that these Craftsman-looking screws are going to be in my foot forever. It seemed like everyone was saying that their screws were coming out, so I guess I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t the only one!
Musictch, the shoe is issue is more mine than my employer’s. I’m a bit of a shoe addict, and by that I mean a high-heeled shoe addict. Work is really not a problem, I’m an attorney and I specialize in Disability and Leave law, so I don’t think anyone is going to complain about accommodating any shoe needs I have. I just want to be able to wear my cute shoes! Or at least wear them part-time.
Monday I get a new cast, I’m actually pretty excited about it because that means I’m halfway to getting the infernal pins out (now those are uncomfortable) and three weeks away from getting the walking boot! Also, apparently the swelling has gone down a lot because the cast is slipping all over my foot. So it will be nice to have it wrapped up nice and tight again.
I hope everyone is doing well! And KT, I hope you are getting some sleep!
Have a fabulous weekend everyone.

Hey, Dixi!
I got a good laugh about your occupation. I wonder how many of us need you as a result of our injuries? I wish I'd had AFLAC when I had to go out for surgery, then went through all of the other mess to get okayed for it. Missing two and a half months of pay and then going into summer vacation where there is none hasn't been too much fun. Believe me, I'll be glad to draw that first paycheck in Sept.
For the first time in my life, I have more than three pairs of shoes but despair of ever wearing most of them again after this experience. The doctor indicated that I should expect swelling for at least the next year. Don't think I'll be able to squeeze into any but the newest which were purchased after the injury to wear to with my dresses.
Hope you and Fusion are doing well. I wonder where HisGrace is. I miss you, friend! Let us know how you are progressing with your weight-
bearing. Did you get your cast off?

Hi Musictch
Sorry it has been so long. I had another infection set in with the incision line over the fusion and the bone graft. The doc has has me on several antibiotics and it is healing pretty well. I am just getting anxious for the full healing to occur. It is getting to be 5 months now.
I dont want to freak anyone out in here though. My doc told me that the extent of my injuries was pretty severe. So please dont freak out anyone. It really has been nice to have some time off of work, away from the "zoo" in the hospital. Dont get me wrong...it has been a HUGE blessing from The Lord to be placed in this job. However, though, we do about 2500 prescriptions a day, so sometimes it gets a little hairy.
My orthopedic specialist said that things were progressing well. I am just wanting this incision to heal quicker. It has been a good enough time waiting for it to heal. My foot seems to be a bit on the stiff side of things, but not really hurting....just stiff in the area of the fusion and bone graft, and a little stiff in the area where the big screw is. I dont think he is going to remove any of the screws, which is a good thing. He is a wonderful doctor.
I was in the Navy Exchange and saw a sailor who had the EXACT same "scooter" that I did, and the EXACT same cam boot on the same foot that I had mine on. I asked him what happened. Apparently, he was "kite surfing" and the line snapped and severed his foot and he had his foot reattached. His surgeon is my surgeon. It was interesting.
OHHH.... the foot swelling is really finally starting to subside. I have been going a few places and not had alot of swelling to my foot. Just mild. I have the compression stalkings, but I am waiting fromt the incision to completely heal before I go about putting those things on. My contract at the hospital is in negotiation soon, and interestingly enough, it will be decided about the time that I am supposed to start back there if okd by my doc.
I pray that you are well Musictch. How are your classes doing, and how are you feeling? I couldnt remember if you told me wether or not you are full weight bearing. It sounds to me like you are doing just beautifully. I pray that all is well with you. I am in prayer now about our next duty station where we will be. We arent sure, but I know God will lead us.
Keep In Touch,
Many Blessings,
Hizgrace

Thank you so much for updating me (us). I was really getting concerned, but was hoping that perhaps you had gotten to go on vacation.
I will pray that your next station will be where there is an equally great doctor for you to work with. Hopefully, you won't have to make a move too soon. Any possibility you could stay where you are?
I will not start back to my classes until school starts in Sept. Because my classroom is upstairs, I'll have to work out a plan with the other music teacher to switch rooms like we did last year. She will get the better end of the deal, but two flights of stairs aren't in my immediate future. We did the same thing last year until I got tired of the inconvenience of the music library and all of my supplies being way across the campus and unaccessible. Of course, at that point, there was no knowing that it would be practice for this year. :-)
How do you like your scooter? Which one do you have? I am using a walker part of the time at home now. Still not weightbearing, but preparing for it. Two sessions of therapy this last week and exercises everyday seem to be helping. Icing is the most painful of everything.
Thank you for your frank sharing of your experiences. We all need to be aware of the potential of infection even practicing good hygiene. Whether it is a rash or infection, it can turn into something dangerous if not cared for. My rash may be a reaction to the boot. The therapist suggested a possibility of being sensitive to neoprene. It's much cooler without the boot, but soon shoes will need to be worn so . . .! I've also wondered if anyone ever has a reaction or rejection of the screws or pins. That would be a revolting development! Thankfully, that doesn't seem like my problem.
Take care! Will be praying!

Hello!
I hope everyone is doing well...or at least as well as we can!
Musictch, my background definitely came in handy, I was on the phone with Short Term Disability the day after it happened and filing my FMLA paperwork on that same day...plus helping the nurse fill it out.
I went back to work yesterday! I missed it so much, I was out for five weeks and that was just far too long. I'd forgotten what it feels like to use my brain and know that I'm a contributing member of society. My foot hurts a bit from motoring around my company's huge complex, but the fact that I'm happy more than makes up for it. Plus I'm fairly certain that the swelling in my second toe has gone down! Thank God for small blessings!!
My new goal is to be able to wear a pair of heels around my birthday (Halloween-ish), I think it's attainable...at least I hope so!! :-D
Hizgrace, I couldn't believe the amount of hardware you had put in your foot! I have to admit when I first found these boards I read your story and was truly inspired! Your honest sharing of your experience has definitely made a difference for me. I am happy to hear that your swelling has been fairly minor while you are getting some freedom.
Ohh...Musictch, I asked my doctor about the possiblity of rejecting the screws and he said that it was highly unlikely...though so is getting crushed by a 400 pound man...so I'm not sure how reassuring that is!
I hope everyone is doing well, I'm feeling good and slightly itchy, I think it is time to distract myself with some mindless television or maybe a good book!
Take care,
~Dixi

Hey Dixi and All,
Glad to hear you're back at work. Got the assurance yesterday that I should be able to go back to my teaching in Sept. I'm still not considered weightbearing, but for all practical purposes I am. Am now out of the wheelchair most of the time at home, able to walk with or without walker, but still must use either of them when leaving home. Made my very first trip ALONE yesterday. Must still wear surgical shoe for 8-12 wks. more. I can definitely live with that. It is nothing compared to the year I've already endured. Hope your itching subsides. That is the worst!
HizGrace, how are you doing? What are you doing in therapy?
Dixi, so glad that you knew the system. Someone needs to!
I pray improvement for all!

Hi All,
I have been following this board for a while now since I found it in Feb 07 earlier this year. I posted back in April and have been waiting to post once I had my plates and screws removed to let you know how it all has been going. It is not all doom and gloom, although it may seem that way at the beginning, esp from reading everything on the internet which I have been - what else do you do when off your feet for 10 weeks?
Brief story (28 years old)- A 1.6 tonne excavator rolled over on my foot 29 Dec 06. Roll bar struck my right mid foot. Taken to hospital and was diagnosed with Lisfranc fracture. Operated on 2 weeks later, surgeon wanted to wait for swelling to subside a little. 15 screws, 2 plates and a bone graft were used to correct my foot. That was Mid Jan 07.
I was placed in a post op cast for 2 weeks, then they changed the cast to fibreglass for a further 4 weeks (6 weeks nwb). Was put into a cam boot for 4 weeks, fwb and allowed to start hydrotherapy. I went every 2nd day. After this I was fitted for a normal runner with orthotic, and I also started physiotherapy - once a week.
My surgeon told me that the plates and screws were to stay in for 6 - 12 months. I went to see him for a check up at 4 months, he was happy with everything and pulled the hardware out at exactly 6 months post op.
That op was 2 weeks ago. I was put into plaster for 1 week to let wounds heal. This was removed last week. The surgeon was extremely positive with the healing that he saw inside my foot when he removed the hardware. When he removed the plaster last week, he told me everything is fantastic within my foot, although it will not be fully healed for another 12-18 months. Was told the only thing I should stay away from is long distance running because of the pounding the foot would take. I will find other ways to keep fit. I was told I could kick a football, soccer ball around no problems, walk long distances etc etc. - after around 12 months though.
I work outside on my feet all day, so I can't go back to work for another 4/5 weeks, but I am walking around home and have been since the plaster was removed late last week. As soon as I started to walk, I had this great smile on my face because foot actually moves better now and feels good. Still sore as the stitches are still in (desolvable), plus the surgeon had to grind bone away from one of the screws where the bone had grown over it. Not as much stiffness after get up from a long rest sitting down / in the morning.
My foot is loosening up everyday, it has only been 4 days since I have been walking on it without the hardware. Already sometimes it feels like my other foot. Although I can still feel the wounds, they haven't fully healed, probably another week or so.
All I am trying to say is there is hope - as long as your surgeon knows what he is doing and aligns everything within the foot correctly. I am now 6 months post op and have a constant smile on my face since having the screws removed. My foot feels great already. I only hope it continues. It is a long process for healing, I was told this from the start. I just hope that it continues to improve now. So far - so good!!!
I know it is hard to stay positive, but try to do so.. That is why I am sending this post!!! I would have loved to see something like this when I injured my foot!!! I had never broken any bones, and just assumed that if you did they mended in a month or so and you were back into it - no problems. When I did my foot, I couldn't believe how distressed I was. But things seem to be looking up now - FINALLY!!!!
take care... any questions - feel free..

That's great news, Excavator. Keep up the good work. I don't know about the others on this site, but I'm thankful for therapy and am enjoying the other people that are there at the same time. Doing the exercises at home isn't bad either.

Hi Musictch and Excavator,
WHAT A BLESSING for your foot !!!! Ok, you wont hear me complain after you (Excavator) having 15 SCREWS AND 2 PLATES....wow, I thought 11 screws and 1 plate was scary.
Things are going pretty well so far. The incision on the left side of my foot where the plate was placed is healing REALLY SLOW, and a portion of it did not want to close, so an infection began. Well, needless to say, I am still fighting the "irritation" and infection, and I have an appointment with the wound care specialists on thursday morning to have them take over so to speak.
They also started some MAJOR bone scans yesterday with the radioactive dye that they injected into my vein. The dye went EXTREMELY quick down to my feet, so they said that my circulation is GREAT !!!! YEA !!!! What a blessing, and they finished the scans, and the radiologists (they were checking to see if the infection went into my bones) said that she REALLY doesnt see ANY infection at all and does not think it went into my bone. She called my orthopedic surgeon and he wanted one more test done TO BE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that it didnt go into my bones.
So today, they took this HUGE syringe full of my blood and left a "PIC" line in my arm for further injections. They sent the blood off to a lab to have the white blood cells extracted from the blood, and put more "radiopaque" dye in with the white blood cells. I had to wait 3 hours for the cells to come back. They re-injected me with the white blood cells and radiopaque and I will go back to the hospital tomorrow.
The white blood cells IF AN INFECTION IS PRESENT IN THE BONES will travel down to my foot and populate around my bones in my foot and that is how they will tell, as the white blood cells are the ones that would normally "fight" the infection. Interesting.
While I was waiting to be re-injected, I went to the security office in the hospital to have all my codes re-instated, as I should be returning there in about 3 weeks or so, if my bone is not infected. I had about 435 emails on my work computer in the pharmacy that I wasnt able to get to. It took me about 1 hour to go through them all. FUN. So hopefully, I will be back soon. 5 Months is a LONG time to be gone.
I guess that they are wanting to train me in "compounding" to the compounding work, where I will mix certain specialty RX only creams, and prepare crash carts for the wards in the hospital, and mix up special "concoctions" for specialty wards in the hospital, as well as prepare meds for children that require mixing. SHOULD BE FUN. They have all of the "recipes" in the back compounding area, and the drug companies give us instructions too. I am excited, as I wanted to complete this training and possibly head over to inpatient and prepare IVS and chemotherapy and such.
Medical "stuffs" (as I call it) interest me. There are SOOO MANY different areas that I want to work in within the hospital I cant make up my mind. I just enjoy the people there SOOO much, and the medicine field just FASCINATES me so much. I am also praying with my hubby about our next duty station, probably Lemoore California, and I am thinking that I might go back to school to be an XRAY technician, and then once I become in the XRAY field, I want to try and going into nuclear medicine, I just adore the patients, and I LOVE taking care of them and encouraging them.
Musictch, I will probably be moving closer to your "neck of the woods". I have lots of dreams, but my family comes first. If I can work it in, I will. Anyway, lots of blessings have come from this injury, and The Lord has really shown me alot of things about myself, and shown me the I need to TRUST HIM, and wait for healing in HIS time. He is AWESOME...TRULY. Some things He has shown me have been "kinda ugly" about myself, but I am glad He did, because it has given me time to really reflect, and change things and grow more, and teach me more patience and humility.
Anyway, enough about me. HOW ARE YOU ??? I pray all is well with you. Please let me know how you are.
Many Blessings To You,
Hizgrace

Many Blessings To You,
Hizgrace

Thank the Lord for progress y'all are making! I can't believe 11 screws, 1 plate, infection, etc., and then Excavator's hardware. Wow! What you've gone through is so much more than I have had to experience, and yet we all are so much better off then those poor soldiers in Napoleon's army.
I'm doing great! Therapy is going well, with a wonderful therapist who pushes me just far enough. Last night and this morning, my foot was screaming that I'd gone too far, but one of the lessons I am learning is "STOP!" Somehow, the Lord has a way of getting that message through our thick skulls. I'm thinking I'd like a nice vacation though, away from kids, away from the phone, and away from home. My sister suggested San Diego! I was thinking more along the lines of Montana and Idaho --- somewhere really quiet.
Lemoore would be a real change from where you are. Being inland, there is probably not much breeze, but there might still be farming around there. I'm a country gal at heart. Can you tell? You would be a nice day's trip from the beautiful Sequoia National Park. It has been many years since we have been up there. It is farther north from us than we are presently from you. We are only 1hr. 45 min. in good traffic from Balboa Park. I did that trip for the birth of our first grandchild twelve years ago. Now, the freeway (expressway, for everyone but CA'ns) are better but traffic is much worse. We'll see what the Lord has in store for you. Keep me posted.
About the compounding, that would be great since you could take that experience with you anywhere. The other things you could do elsewhere, too. What wonderful opportunities! Hope your dreams are able to be fulfilled.
Also, we'll be anxious to hear how you do today at the hospital!
Prayers for all,
Musictch

Hi Musictch,
GOOD NEWS!!! No problems with the doctor, my bone scans came out normal and the incision line is closed !!! I wanted to dance around...HA HA HA!!! I probably would have fallen again and re-broke it !!! Anyway the bone density is very good as my doctor told me, and things look great!!! So now all that is left for me to do is to finish with physical therapy for my ankle to strengthen it. I am supposed to start phys therapy next week sometime. My husband and I are pretty sure that we are going to try and get stationed in Lemoore. It is a really pretty area. We are really excited !!! I am excited, we are going to a wedding next weekend, and I ordered a dress (floor length) AND I GET TO DRESS UP!!! Ok, I still feel like a little kid.
My hubby is wearing his CHOKER WHITES !!!! I love that uniform. He looks so doggone handsome!!! Anyway, I will let you know how things go after the physical therapy. My foot is a little stiff, but really the only part that seems to have a little pain is my ankle, of all places. I know it is because it is really week and needs to be worked out. I think it has been 5 months now, and I need to get it used to activity. It will be nice.
Have you any information about what kinds of shoes are good, the top of my foot seems to be really sensitive. I want to make sure that I will get proper support and that they will be comfortable. I dont care if the shoes are ugly, I just want the comfort. Ok....not too terribly ugly.....ok..... support and comfort come first. Boy, Im fickle.
Enough about me, how are you doing? How is your work going?? Is your foot doing well? I pray that alll is well with you and your family.
MANY BLESSINGS,
HIZGRACE

Oh, how I love to hear from you! I'm so glad that things are really looking up for you. Thank the Lord for very BIG blessings!
I really don't know about the shoes yet. I still must wear my ugly black surgical shoe, but it is far better than the boot! So, I wear a black sandal on the other foot. I am still technically non-weightbearing on the ball and toes of my foot, but am walking around the house without a walker. Am using a walker outside for very short distances and the wheelchair for long trips like Costco or the mall.
I have also had discomfort on top of my foot, but also on the bottom. I must have done too much too quickly because my foot swelled up so badly at the end of last week that it hurt to stand. My therapist worked on Mon. to get more circulation but did actually less of a workout. Usually, it is relatively easy to pick up marbles off of the floor, but I couldn't do it hardly at all on Sat. or Sun. Swelling has gone down significantly with less activity and better pacing of what I do.
Yes, those dress whites are sharp looking! Don't get to see my son-in-law in his uniform very often. In fact, don't remember the last time. He recently made Commander and will get that pinned on sometime next year. I don't understand the delay, but still hope that we will get to see that uniform on him at some point.
I surely wish that there was some way we could be in contact after our foot ordeal is over. Of course, the beauty of this site is the anonimity of each contributor.
Haven't done anything about school yet. Our office is closed until the 13th, and after that perhaps I can plan my curriculum for the year. Every class is different, and each has its own challenges. My 4th graders last year were great kids with nice voices, but little musical knowledge yet eager learners. The older two grades had kids ranging from tone deaf to solo quality, but little interest in learning notation or history. The general dynamics of each class changes from year to year even with the same students. It should be very interesting going back to them after having not finished last year with them.
Will you be transferred soon? Didn't you mention that you have children? If so, will any of them have to change schools in the middle of the year?
Have a great time at the wedding and really enjoy dressing up. And, you can hide the shoe under your dress ---just be careful not to trip!!!!!!
Blessings,
Musictch
PS Excavator, are you still out there? Are you back at work? How are you doing? Hopefully, you have read a lot of the earlier posts since a lot of our chitchat hasn't centered on all of our recovery. Somehow, when we get just so far in our recovery, it is easy to find other things to do besides seek out info on this difficult injury. But, since a few of us are still seeking info and enjoying hearing from others, we need to help you along as we were by others! Please let us know how things are going.

I got this injury by falling down 2 steps. My right ankle twisted & I pitched forward, landing, toes down, full weight, on my left foot, then twisting. The radiologist (not the doctor...by his own admission, he missed it) recognized the injury. They put a plaster splint on it & made an appointment for me with the orthopedic for 2 days later. The orthopedic re-x-rayed it & debated heavily whether or not to do surgery, then ended up putting a fiberglass cast on it & had me come back in 7 days for more x-rays (including a weight bearing one). He was still unsure, the gap with weight bearing was approximately 3 mm, xrays without weight was approximately 1.5 to 2 mm. Then he ordered a CT scan, the results of that (non weight bearing) appeared to be better off than he thought & he has cancelled surgery (for now) and is planning to keep me in a cast up to 8 more weeks with absolutly no weight bearing & he will periodically re-xray & change the cast to make sure the displacement doesn't increase & starts to decrease. He warned that surgery may end up being necessary if displacement increases. I am thankful that he is willing to try to let my body heal with surgery, but I would like some input on anyone else that might have handled this injury this way. Any advice on more comfortable sleeping? Anyone deal with calf cramps inside the cast? What about knee pain? Evidently I hold that leg at an odd angle & my knee is starting to hurt quiet a bit. Anyway, thanks for listening & any response you have!
P.S. I was told this is a rare injury, but it seems there are alot of people that have experienced it! %-)

Hi Guest,
You have come to the right place....we'll encourage you. I broke my foot lisfranc and all in March of 07'. I had surgery on the 9th of May. I had 11 screws, a plate and a gastroc recession. Things are going well now. I have finally had the incisions heal, and my next route is going to be physical therapy. That should be starting sometime next week. Just be as patient as you can, it sounds like your ortho doctor is doing what he can. Usually, from what I gather, if you are young, the healing process comes a bit quicker. The surgery is to give strength to the area, as it is one of the biggest supporters in your foot.
If there are things you can do at home, courses or education on the internet or such, do them. Follow what he says to a "T" and make sure you are getting plenty of rest and keeping your foot elevated. If you should ever have any questions or problems with your diagnosis, by all means, go and seek a second opinion. Ask many doctors (orthos) if you can. The surgery is really not SO terribly bad. I was off my pain meds on the 5th day after surgery.
So that was a blessing. Before I can start full weight bearing, I have to have phys. therapy to strengthen my ankle, as it really hasnt been used since march and REALLY needs some strengthening. When I walk with the CAM boot on, really the thing that gets painful is my ankle, but that should change once I get phys. Therapy. I hope this helps. Dont hesitate to present any questions you may have.
Blessings,
Hizgrace
