I am very athletic woman, 28 years old. My ferritin is low but I am not anemic, my blood count is ok for now! The problems are my periods. It seems that I am losing lots of blood. They are heavy. I don’t want to panic, although my doctor makes me nervous and I think he doesn’t treat me well.

There is speculation that a low ferritin state without anemia may contribute to poor performance, although the normal ferritin for women is 15, many of the women studied to set these normals may have had low iron stores from chronic menstrual blood loss, so the true normal for women is probably nearer to25. The best approach to eliminate the risk of a low ferritin without anemia in athletes is checking a serum ferritin annually, and treating with iron supplements if it drops below 25.
