I had a retina detachment a few weeks after my root canal dental work.. interestingly, recently one of my coworkers also developed retina detachment a few weeks after his dental implantation. I begin to believe that the vibration and the drilling may have something to do with the detachment.

I just had the exact same reaction to an upper tooth that was pulled.

I too had tooth extraction, and some 4 weeks later root canal treatment; the day following the root c/treatment I suddenly saw ants, lightning - in addition decreased and blurred vision on both eyes ...ended up within 24 hours in the ED department with 12 retinal tears to prevent retinal detachement; I'm male, no other probs, 64 years of age . Just pondering weather I should cancel or proceed root c/treatment...

You know that you are correct. It happened to me as well. I am not old. I had 3 procedures requiring 6 additiona novocicain injections for a cavity. Within 2 weeks later, the same tooth needed a root canal. Same problem. The Mendibula block didn't work (I know my pain in the left side of my face where this same tooth #18 also could not get numb from the block) also needed an additional 6 more regular shots of novacain. The nerve damage was obvious when 6 hours after the root canal, I saw bright flashes and spider web, black in color floaters. I went to my eye surgeon and needed laser surgery for a torn retina. NO COINCIDENCE. Very frustrating that so called professionals will not acknowledge this connection. After reading here that others have had this experience. I conclude that you we are not ignorant patience patience and know our own bodies. Now I am really mad.. I hope you have recovered. What a shame. I am still in the process of getting my root canal revisited and it is horrific to be put in a corner where the outcome will impact our lives forever.

I agree with you. My Ophthalmologist at the Eye Institute in Tucson specifically told me that after the onset of Posterior Vitreous Detachment (the sudden onset of floaters, flashes of light, and the bug-like objects seen in the eye) that there is a 6-week danger period of it developing a retinal tear. He said to avoid anything "jarring" like even jumping and jogging. In my opinion that would equate to a dental drill vibrating and also the jerking movements by pulling and yanking out a tooth. Therefore, just to be safe I'm going to wait the 6 weeks before I have my tooth pulled and an implant and veneers done. PERIOD.

That depends on how much jerking went on in the process of the tooth extraction and/or if the tooth was close to a spot that affects the eyes. Any jerking or jarring movements can cause retinal tear, not sure if jerking and jarring movements can affect macular holes, but if so AVOID TOOTH EXTRACTIONS & VIBRATING DRILLS until after the 6-week danger period and/or a retinal eye exam by an ophthalmologist.

No one warns us that everyone around the age of 55-60 should have an ophthalmologist eye exam to include retinal exam. I paid $85 cash at the Eye Institute in Tucson. Tears only occur in 10% of people after the onset of Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD) during the 6-week danger period; all vibrating & jarring must be avoided.

I share your frustration and am sorry this happened to you. I've learned we must be vigilant and do our own research. Doctors don't have all the answers and many still practicing with older information and procedures: Remember they call it "PRACTICE" for a reason. Good thing you caught it at the tear stage before a complete retinal detachment, if that happened you'd gone blind.

Went to my optician with blurred vision after re-root canal surgery and recently the tooth removed. He says, “The drilling has caused a macular hole.” I’m very short sighted. Teeth and eyes ARE connected. Don’t have root canals as the dentist cannot assurecthey remove the infection - an infection can travel and cause lots of health complications.

I just had a tooth extracted on March 16th, 2018. I recently have discovered a Halo or circular shape of light which started as a half circle and now almost a full circle. I am 54 years old. It's only in the eye which on the side where the tooth was extracted. Humm??

Yes, Yes and yes!! I am now in my second week of face down recovery after surgery to repair a maculer hole. Approximately 3 months ago I had 1 tooth extracted and 2 dental posts put in. It was shortly after that I noticed that I was not seeing as clear. I decided to see my eye doctor and after extensive testing, the hole was evident. He sent me immediately to a retina specialist who performed vitrectomy surgery. When I asked how this could have happened so suddenly I was asked whether I had had any recent head trauma because the separation seemed to be of a violent nature. I had a similar exam the year before and it showed that I was possibly heading toward soft maculer degeneration but I am convinced that dental procedures helped it along. To date, neither eye doctor, oral surgeon or retina specialist will back up this theory. Hmmm, maybe they missed a class.

I had 2 dental implants and mysteriously that night my vision was out of wack, I went to opthalmologist 1 week later and discovered a macular hole, too many coincidences.

I had 2 implants put in, that night my vision was all blurry and I had floaters and distortion, 1 week later after a visit to my opthalmologist they said I had a macular hole. I believe it was caused from the drilling into my jaw bone.
