Hi guys, I'm pregnant just about at 8 weeks and my doctor wants me to take metformin for gestational diabetes. Has anyone pregnant had any positive experiences with Metformin? I have read on the Internet that is has a few sides effects such as stomach upset, nausea and vomiting. Pregnancy can do that on its own. So, I'm a little concerned about the throwing-up and nausea. Do most people who take metformin nausea and vomiting? Or, is that rare and metformin has positive side effects? Is pregnant at the moment and taking metformin for a while who can tell me their experience with it? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I've been taking metformin for 6 years now and 4 years ago I was pregnant. I just continued on metformin and for the most part didn't have any problems. Early during the second trimester, I experienced some cramping and diarrhea but that went away in two weeks. I really can't say that it was caused by metformin but other than time I was fine. Initially my doctor told me to take one of pills at dinner time to see if that would work. However, I didn't do that. But, if you run into the situation that might work for you. I've been very happy with metformin and I think you will to. I don't think you have anything to be worried about. At any rate, if you have a bout of diarrhea, a number of women take Imodium and that works well. You would probably need Imodium for a short period of time. I wish the best during you pregnancy. I know this is a very exciting time for you. Just remember that there really is no reason to worry about metformin. What minor side effects you might or might not experience, just remember the benefits of metformin are far and wide.
