Hi, my grandfather suffers from Perkinson’s disease and he is taking Mirapexin and Pramipexole. His condition hasn’t really improved much, so I am wondering if it is a right therapy for him?
Hi, as you probably know Parkinson’s disease is not curable, and medications are only used to control symptoms. Mirapexin is commercial name for tablets containing the active ingredient pramipexole, which is a molecule acting as dopamine in the body. It works by mimicking the activity of dopamine and replacing it’s deficiency. Dopamine belongs to group of substances known as a neurotransmitters, which are involved in transmitting messages between nerves. In Parkinson’s disease it is reduced or absent in the brain and it causes the disease symptoms. Neurologists are responsible for treatment of Parkinson’s disease, but the disease is slowly progressing and can’t be stopped.
