i had ny mirena inserted august 2008 and by december of the same month I tarted having severe left arm and chest pain till now. i visited a doctor and was diagonised with rheumatoid arthritis. I have always enjoyed very good health. I hve been on msm and golucosamine for the past one year. I realied i have more intense pain douring my periods which is basically a blood smear. I am grateful to have come to this site and read other women's experiences. I actually became worried of my inability to lose wait and looking pregnant despite having a very healthy loife style incorporating gyming and good diet.I started googling over this issues. I can not wait to remove this mirena.

Yes to all of these posts. I have had Mirena in for over two years now and it has been hell. I have decided that another child would be much more welcome than Mirena, my evil twin. Sometimes the rush of anger, hostility and hopelessness is so overwhelming that I feel like I have been invaded by something evil...and its' name is Mirena. It is Saturday, so I am going to call my Doctor on Monday to get this thing removed. Reading these posts has made me feel like I'm not alone, so thank you everyone for posting.

I thought I was CRAZY, I have had so many of the same reactions, depression, moody and have gone off the deep end a couple times, I havent slept in months and I thought all this was because of work stress. I called my OBGYN and she said the Mirena doesnt get into the blood stream and there are no side effects listed as I have described. It has ruined my current relationship. We were talking about marriage and making plans, now he has moved out. I have had some numbness in my hands that I havent heard anyone else mention...I think I will be making an appointment to have this thing removed. I want my life back and I want to be that confident fun person my soon to be ex said he fell in love with.

I had the mirena in for 1 year with hope of finding a cure for heavy periods..As soon as i had it inserted i went from being a heathy, fit and in good shape, to feeling depressed, tired, gained 7 kilos, looked like i was 5 months pregnant, was always hungry and moody...After about 8 months my hair started to fall out and experienced numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and the though of having sex with the husband made me feel sick and had no desire too even while ovulating!! very dry downstairs and I would bleed every two week and headaches...i sometimes wonder if you still get pregnant and the fertilized egg does not implant and sheds like a miscarriage after ovulation as i always felt the pregnant tirdness and sickness??..After reading these posts i realized i wasnt the only one and had removed instantly! Was not painful having removed..just like a papsmear...I cant tell you enough how glad i am that i took the dam thing out! I lost 2 kilos in the first week from the fliud retention then went on a strict diet and excercised to loose the rest..When i was on the mirena no amount of excercise or diet would help. i have had out for 2 months now and I feel like me again and i am in better shape than before from feeling happy again and gaining control back! I would never reccomend anyone putting this thing in..The docs tell you its the best thing but for me, not good..However i do know people who it does agree with..I think if you struggle with the pill, which i do, then you will have the same side affects..Tubes tied for me as i dont ever want artificial hormones raging in my body ever again!!

Hello everyone. I've had my Mirena IUD for about 6 wks now and I LOVE it. Only slight spotting here and there. However, lately I've noticed a weird gush of liquid that happens at random moments throughout the day. It's clear and odorless. Anyone else experience anything like this?
I wish....
I got mirena "the monster" in October 2006. For a while I thought it was the best thing ever. In the next few months I gained a few lb, my skin stared to scare after bouts of acne, I did not have the usual energy. I blamed the new job, stress and aging. It seeemed like an accelareted aging but I have just accepted it, low metabolism, everyday stress, you name it.
In May 2007 we went for a graduation of a friend. When entering the auditorium I started the feel panicky... it was a weird sensation but I decided not to pay attention to it. I love crowds, I love people. I forgot about it soon afterwards.
During my annual the doctor told me that my thyroid is becoming hypo and I have the elevated number of antibodies.
Then in July 2007 I was returning from Europe I had a full blown panic attack (I know now what it was). I had to be taken to the emergency room where I was treated for tachycardia and ordered to see the cardiologist. The months between July and December I have spend trying to figure out what is wrong with me. I started to have the anxiety attack on the regular basis, insomnia, I lost half of my hair, I was just barely surving, living from day to day, unable to accomplish anything, I was just trying to attend to the basic needs of my family.
I went to the cardiologist, endocrynologist, ob, EarThroatnose doctor (In september I developed the strange sensention of a foreign object in my throat), my family doctor (several times). I was put on Beta blockers, xanax, lexapro. Nothing was helping. I was depressed and absent, could not remember a thing, my mind was under some gaze. I could not understand: I am happily married wife, mother with no worries, great financial situation, job and perspectives. No drama and trauma in the last few years.
But even though it did not make any sense, I started to look for a psychologist/psychiatrist. I hired the private trainer and started the rigorous program of exercising. I learn how to meditate and attended twice a week yoga classes. I read everything in the library on the subject of anxiety, I learned relaxing techniques, bought tapes, music, dvd's. Changed diet. Eliminated alcohol and caffeine. Got massages. Everything provided only a temporary relief.
I started to make notes... the most severe anxiety started every 28 days (for a week) and sometimes in the 14 days. This when I suspected that mirena may have something with it. Then I found this site and several other sites. In December, after a month of researching I came to the conclusion that it is impossible that thousands women on different continents are hallucinating... and on December 22, 2007 I went to take The Thing out. the best Christmas gift ever!
12 days later I had the famous Mirena crash (thank you again for sharing!), with a mini depression, suicidal thoughts, full blown anxiety and a lot of crying. The period brought a huge relief. The side effects are still present but they are diminishing day by day.
As someone here recomended, just when I was about to start this month "the anxiety period"... I went to accupuncturist. I told him that I need help with anxiety. When on the table he told me that I am having hormonal imbalance, I have a lot of heat (?) inside and that the region that correspod to the liver is pretty swollen. He told me that he is going to help me in 5 session and that I will be able to take off myself and that my body in a few months will return to normal. I have had two sessions, I did not have acute anxiety this months, I almost feel like my old self.
I am off meds, I take occassionally the beta blockers for heart palpitation (one time in January), I started to supplement with vitamin B complex. I drink Sleepy Time Extra -- with valerian (celestial seasoning) at bed time. If I need to make sure that I will sleep I take the prescription antihistamine (hydroxizinum).
I am sure there is a light in the long tunnel... courtesy of producents of Mirena... well ... you could say that I owe them a lot of spiritual growth and learning... at the price of personal hell...
Please know if I can be of any help-- I will gladly answer any questions.
Have hope! Take the damn thing out!!!

I had mine put in Jan 2011 and finally got an appt to get it removed April 1st . I cannot tolerate the symptoms.. I do not have kids so guess it was worse for me with my uteruse never being stretched before. One thing I have not had is heavy bleeding. I have only spotted with this. I barely had a period since I got this in, but I actually like getting my period because I think it flushes stuff out. Side effects-I have had very bad cramping from mild to what I would call bring you down to the ground cramps, migraines, my old anxiety has resurfaced, extreme lethargy that is getting worse and hard for me to wake up in the morning for work, forgetfulness, depression, nausea in mornings, very soft, foul stool, breast tenderness was really bad at first but has greatly diminished, no sex drive really, pain after intense intercourse/positions, sudden bouts of acne, and my skin has always been clear after puberty but worst of all is weight gain. 5 lbs since Jan. THIS WAS THE LAST STRAW.No matter how healthy I eat, it won't come off. I am sure once it is out of me, it will drop within a month or less. I was doing well with weight loss until I had this put in me. I will not have the doctor make me change my mind a 2nd time. I am determinted to get this out of me. I booked it for a Friday so I have the weekend to recuperate from any cramping or heavy bleeding before I go back to work. I will celebrate once it's out of me and be back to being NATURAL ( drug, hormone free)

OMG! I thought I was going crazy and insane!! What a relief to know that it's not just me. I'm 38 years old with 1 child. After being on the pill (which I never had any issues with) since I was 16 (excluding the time I was pregnant), I decided to get the Mirena - 5 years of worry free BC and no problems -- what could be better! Well......where do I start?? On Dec 30, 2009 I went in for what was supposed to be a "simple" and relatively "painless" 15 minute procedure actually ended up taking an hour. The insertion itself took 15 minutes but for 45 minutes I laid on the Dr.'s table trying to collect and calm myself down - extreme cramping, broke out into a cold sweat, got dizzy and felt as if I was going to faint. i have never felt that kind of extreme pain before and I have a pretty high tolerance for pain - I even had natural childbirth with no issues! Needless to say, I did not go into work as planned and instead went home to recuperate. What effects have I experienced? You name it - terrible acne (and not the regular whitehead zits that you can easily pop, but rather the sebaceous (ulcer) types that you cannot pop and take 3 weeks to go away and leave dark pigmentation on your skin); insomnia; being bloated; weight gain; migraines, anxiety attacks; heart palpitations; depression; brain "fog"; extreme irritability; loss of motivation and energy; loss of hair (I have to clean my shower drain plug every morning); tingling in my hands and feet; lower abdominal cramping; back and shoulder pain; plagued with waves of nausea at any given day; loss of interest in sex (and I already did not have a high libido); vaginal soreness and itchiness; recurring yeast infections (I have had 2 within 2 months) and bacterial vaginosis. My lack of sexual interest and continual "infections" have been a source of conflict for my husband and I - we have even went so far as to accusing one or the other of having an extra marital affair and that is what is causing these issues. Just until recently, I never connected all the symptoms that I was experiencing to one common factor -- the Mirena!! I didn't have all the effects at one time; they would occur at different times so being the logical person I am, I always attributed the symptoms to other things - stress at work, stress at home; indigestion which was causing gas in my intestines and causing me to bloat; weather/barometric changes; allergies, etc........ One of my lows came while vacationing in Maui last year with my family - I missed 4 days because I was plagued with migraines, nausea, depression, and muscle and joint pains. I now know that all the effects that I have been experiencing which (by coincidence, I THINK NOT) have been within the past year of having the Mirena. I have enjoyed not having a period for a year but I would gladly go back to having monthly periods then deal one minute more with all the same effects that I have been this past year. I have made an appointment with my OBGYN to have it removed this coming Monday!!! Good-bye Mirena!!

I have had my IUD for 2 years a week after i got it I was in class and I started cramping and having contractions like I was going in Labor I hurt so bad I couldnt stand up. I went to my Dr. that day and my body was trying to push it out my Dr. fixed it. After that everything was good till a few months ago I didnt think it was my IUD until now. I've been having bacterial infections bad I eat yogurt on a daily bases. The discharge gets so bad that it makes me so raw. I see how the Mirena is a birthcontrol, because of what the discharge is doing to my skin I dont want to have sex with my husband because it hurts.
