I had my Mirena put in almost three years ago. The initial pain and cramping was a headache, but I took it as a good trade for five years of worry free birth control. Every kind of birth control is going to have its side effects. (Some make you gain weight, some effect your skin, others upset your sleep schedule, some throw your horomones around).
After being on five different kinds of birth control pills, and trying the Neuva Ring my doctor suggested the Mirena IUD.
I have had nearly three years of worry free birth control; my IUD never slips out. It was uncomfortable for a few months after insertion (I've never had children before). Now it is one less thing I have to worry about. I'm more afraid of having it taken out than anything.
My strings have slipped up into my uterus, which I had an ultrasound to confirm. They're doing fine in there, we send each other emails once in awhile. Really, it's no big deal.
A lot of women have a tendency to be hypochondriacs, thinking they have some major health problem everytime they hear a bad report on the news. And the majority of women who go to blogs like this are having serious problems.
What I'm trying to say is that the Mirena works for me, without problems. My heart is fine, my head doesn't ache, I'm sleeping about as much as anyone does in this busy economy. And I would like to remind everyone, that it is birth control. It doesn't fix or prevent urinary tract infections, or bacterial vaginosis, or yeast infections. You will still get all of your favorite female problems, infact I still get my period nearly every month. (Some women on the IUD stop getting theirs).
I hope this helps someone. Just remember, keep calm and carry on.

(quote) from Elise in California__I had Mirena put in on 1/11/2011, I bleed for over 3 months, and could feel it in me! I'm suffering from sevrere dreppression,I thought that it was from me having a baby .I thought I was suffering from post pardom depression .my doctor put me on all kind of medication .the worst thing about it ,is that my husband says he can feel something poking him when we have sex .has anyone else experience that ?so now I'm trying to make an appointment with my doctor to get it removed . the bad thing about it is that he's complaining that it feels like a little wire poking his penis .Quote:I TOO HAD MIRENA FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS AND IT STARTED SLIPPING OUT IT CAUSED HEADACHES AND CRAMPS. IT CAME OUT ENOUGH ONE DAY THAT I JUST PULLED IT OUT MYSELF. ITS CHEAPER THAT WAY. THANK GOD SOUNDS LIKE I GOT IT OUT JUST IN TIME
I have also been experiencing insomniac too my doctors gave me meds for that too .and now I'm reading about all these different side affects regarding this Mirena.I also experience the dash of fluid coming out of my vagina .I'm going to the doctors because I think I have a bladder infection because my backs been killing me and I think it's due to my kidneys . I wish someone would tell me about are the side affects before I had it put in.it's bad enough that you bleed for 3 to 6 months let alone when you have intercourse your spouse can fill it poking him. OMG I can't wait to get this damn thing out of me !

I have had my Mirena for just about a year now, I got it in May 2010. It's now april 2011 and ever since i got it about a month after actually i started getting crippling pains in my stomach right by my uteris. They are so painful it feels like Im being stabbed. I feel sick to my stomach, dizzy and I get really emotional and moody. I am having this pain as I write this which is why I was looking it up in the first place, after what i have read I will be having the mirena removed. To hear of this thing floating about in peoples abdominal cavity?! That is horrific! With the pain I feel, I hope that isn't my case. The mirena has been EXCELLENT birth control but the side effect for me are not worth it. I have spurts where I can't sleep. Awful mood swings. Chest pains, stomach pains and occasional dizziness. NOT WORTH IT!

I've had the Mirena for almost a year now too. I do get the bad pains, and I have been having slight anxiety attacks and many other symptoms aswell but nothing that has been life threatening, just rather annoying. Here's my concern...it has been excellent birth control and I haven't had the slightest worry with it but because of the side effects Im not sure if i should have it removed or not. Ive asked my mom and my sister and my mom says yes but sister said no, its worth it to be safe because i am in a long term relationship but were not ready for kids....were still too young. Anyone have any advice?

I too am having these problems. Another symptom I think is from the mirena is the loss of sexualness. I'm 21 and used to be very sexually active now nothing at all, its almost dreadful. Also I'm moody, and get pregnancy symptoms like crazy. (No I'm not pregnant after umteen tests thats for sure.) I feel like I'm not alone after reading these review. Guess this is my light at the end of the tunnel. Just hope I can get this out and get back to normal. Wonder if there are any type of "withdrawls" from this mirena thing?

i got the mirena in 2005 it did great for five years not one single problem, when it was time to come out i had one put in the same day.since then i have had the worst pain you can possibly endure.some days i can barely walk or even get out the bed,and like others i experience headaches more often now..the sex drive is great, but having this mirena makes it hurt and very uncomfortable..do you think i should have waited on getting another one so soon, i asked the doctor he insisted and said that it wouldn't bother me at all....after reading all of these posts it seems like the right thing to do is have it removed!!

Wow!!!! You have told my story.Thank you soooo much for sharing. It has confirmed my suspicions. I'm making an appointment today to take the thing out.
Do you have any suggestions of how to get through the ''Crash''?
Hello everyone. I've had my Mirena IUD for about 6 wks now and I LOVE it. Only slight spotting here and there. However, lately I've noticed a weird gush of liquid that happens at random moments throughout the day. It's clear and odorless. Anyone else experience anything like this?
I wish....
I got mirena "the monster" in October 2006. For a while I thought it was the best thing ever. In the next few months I gained a few lb, my skin stared to scare after bouts of acne, I did not have the usual energy. I blamed the new job, stress and aging. It seeemed like an accelareted aging but I have just accepted it, low metabolism, everyday stress, you name it.
In May 2007 we went for a graduation of a friend. When entering the auditorium I started the feel panicky... it was a weird sensation but I decided not to pay attention to it. I love crowds, I love people. I forgot about it soon afterwards.
During my annual the doctor told me that my thyroid is becoming hypo and I have the elevated number of antibodies.
Then in July 2007 I was returning from Europe I had a full blown panic attack (I know now what it was). I had to be taken to the emergency room where I was treated for tachycardia and ordered to see the cardiologist. The months between July and December I have spend trying to figure out what is wrong with me. I started to have the anxiety attack on the regular basis, insomnia, I lost half of my hair, I was just barely surving, living from day to day, unable to accomplish anything, I was just trying to attend to the basic needs of my family.
I went to the cardiologist, endocrynologist, ob, EarThroatnose doctor (In september I developed the strange sensention of a foreign object in my throat), my family doctor (several times). I was put on Beta blockers, xanax, lexapro. Nothing was helping. I was depressed and absent, could not remember a thing, my mind was under some gaze. I could not understand: I am happily married wife, mother with no worries, great financial situation, job and perspectives. No drama and trauma in the last few years.
But even though it did not make any sense, I started to look for a psychologist/psychiatrist. I hired the private trainer and started the rigorous program of exercising. I learn how to meditate and attended twice a week yoga classes. I read everything in the library on the subject of anxiety, I learned relaxing techniques, bought tapes, music, dvd's. Changed diet. Eliminated alcohol and caffeine. Got massages. Everything provided only a temporary relief.
I started to make notes... the most severe anxiety started every 28 days (for a week) and sometimes in the 14 days. This when I suspected that mirena may have something with it. Then I found this site and several other sites. In December, after a month of researching I came to the conclusion that it is impossible that thousands women on different continents are hallucinating... and on December 22, 2007 I went to take The Thing out. the best Christmas gift ever!
12 days later I had the famous Mirena crash (thank you again for sharing!), with a mini depression, suicidal thoughts, full blown anxiety and a lot of crying. The period brought a huge relief. The side effects are still present but they are diminishing day by day.
As someone here recomended, just when I was about to start this month "the anxiety period"... I went to accupuncturist. I told him that I need help with anxiety. When on the table he told me that I am having hormonal imbalance, I have a lot of heat (?) inside and that the region that correspod to the liver is pretty swollen. He told me that he is going to help me in 5 session and that I will be able to take off myself and that my body in a few months will return to normal. I have had two sessions, I did not have acute anxiety this months, I almost feel like my old self.
I am off meds, I take occassionally the beta blockers for heart palpitation (one time in January), I started to supplement with vitamin B complex. I drink Sleepy Time Extra -- with valerian (celestial seasoning) at bed time. If I need to make sure that I will sleep I take the prescription antihistamine (hydroxizinum).
I am sure there is a light in the long tunnel... courtesy of producents of Mirena... well ... you could say that I owe them a lot of spiritual growth and learning... at the price of personal hell...
Please know if I can be of any help-- I will gladly answer any questions.
Have hope! Take the damn thing out!!!

I've had the Mirena for 3 weeks now. I've had a bit of cramping from time to time and in the very beginning had some pain in my lower left side, which seems to have stopped. Now I'm having chest pain. I've read from other comments that chest pain is a common side effect. Can anybody tell me if and when this might go away? I want to give the Mirena a chance as everybody I've talked to who has Mirena tells me that during the first 6 weeks I will hate it due to the side effects but that after 6 weeks I will "love it". I'm just not sure I can go through another 4 weeks of having this chest pain. I had to call in sick today because of it.
