Hey everyone,

So i am on day 7 of my recovery. I am 21 years old, and honestly have had a really rough experience. The first 3 days or so wasn't so bad because I was on my meds a lot, but eventually the lortab started to make me ill. I cut back on that and developed a bunch of flem in my throat, causing me to have coughing sensations and itches. During my sleep I would cough and wake up. I would be bleeding very bad, trying to shove ice chips in my mouth to freeze the open wound, but the more blood and ice I swallowed made my stomach upset, so I would vomit up blood. The bleeding and vomiting would stop about 30 minutes after it started. This episodes occurred on my 4th-7th day of recovery. Now i am taking promethazine codeine to stop the coughing. I hope to get better soon! i am so scared of the bleeding to occur again, and the fact that I havent eaten food in 7 days. I miss my health, my life and my holidays. Good luck to anyone getting this surgery! it has been a LIVING HELL for me. worse than ever imagined. :-(

Hello all,

I had my tonsils removed 4 days ago. I'm 53 and was well aware that the recovery from this was going to be tough, but after living with huge, diseased tonsils my entire life (and they were getting worse all the time), I felt I truly didn't have a choice. They HAD to come out!

My surgery went well and was done as same-day surgery. I was back home in about 6 hours after I went into the hospital. The first day was surprisingly easy. Some pain, but not horrible. My Dr. told me to religiously take the pain meds he's prescribed, since...if you let up on them..the pain can get so out of hand that it's hard to control. On day 2, I had a bad reaction to the pain med I was on (dizzy, almost fainted), so I'm now on acetomeniphine with codene (prescription from the Dr.). It seems to be working to quell the pain alot, although it makes me very drowsy.
As for my throat..well, it hurts! The sides of my tongue, in the back, hurt too. I'm really looking forward to the time that it begins to feel better.
As for eating: After having a freezer full of ice cream brought to me by friends, I've gotten sick of it really fast. It also seems to make me have to cough a little..and that's not good. So, I've been eating ice pops, chewing ice cubes, drinking LOTS of ice water and some sports drinks (do NOT drink anything citrus!).
Yesterday, (Day 3 after surgery), I made myself some scrambled eggs..and it was HEAVEN! I also had some chicken noodle soup (I made sure to chew it alot more than I normally would before swallowing. I'm already very turned off by all the sweet things one normally eats after having their tonsils out. Truly...the best feeling thing to eat, for me, has been cold Jello. It just goes down my throat so easily and feels great too!
Ironically,....I'm craving steak and would LOVE a huge, crunchy salad with ranch dressing! I've been watching tons of TV..and never noticed how many darned food commercials there are! It's like torture to watch them! I hope to God I'm at least going to lose a few pounds from this ordeal. It would be pretty neat to be a size smaller! ;-)
I'm really tired, but I'm sure the meds are part of that. The other part is probably just sitting around the house all day and night. So far, I haven't had problems sleeping at night. I have made it a point to wake up 2 or 3 times per night to drink some ice water. I believe that's helped alot. I have a follow up appointment with my Dr. on Day 8..and am hoping things are healing well. I haven't seen any bleeding..and know it can still happen. My Dr. has told me that if this happens, give him a call right away so he can judge if it's something I need to go to the hospital about.

Truly...I put this operation off for the past few years becuase I was aprehensive about the recovery. Now...although I'm only 4 days post op, I wish I'd had my tonsils out long ago.
Just stock up on Jello and drink lots and lots of ice water. Take your pain meds..and think of the future..without nasty tonsils! Best Wishes! ;-)

Again...this is no picnic! It hurts like heck! But the promise of finally having a healthy throat is something that's so wonderful to me. My tonsils were horrible. My Dr. told me that they were just "pumping toxins into my body" and that, now that they're gone, I will probably see a huge improvement in my over-all health.

everyone is right - this is the worst physical pain you could ever imagine. i am on day 24 and not in pain anymore, but they still feel weird.

i am 27 male, and had the cold steel surgery.

quick diary -

post op 2hrs : so thirsty from starvation pre op, necked 2 jugs of water and 2 egg mayo sarnies (no more pain than sore throat)
post op 6 hrs: Starving, munched ribena, grapes, chocolate you name it! and 2 more beef sandwitches
Morning after: Started swelling, didn't want to talk much and felt drowsy because of meds
day 2,3 gradually got more swoolen, uvula was down to my tongue and huge, scared to sleep and was gagging on it. Yellow film now coating the tonsills.
day 4: starting to get really sore, no ear pain, eating very little, drinking loads of water as advised
day 5-10: Holy hell, ultimate pain beyond pain, ears felt like a hot iron went through my head, throat like I necked a pint of hot chip oil. Codeine no longer works, went onto Tramadol (with the usual diclofenac and paracetamol) - so sedated had bad side effects (apnea, restless leg, in and out of consciousness). Lived with this as they did take away the painm but only for 2 hrs, I would then shake with my fingers in my ears and beg the clock to speed up until next dose! Couldn't eat or drink a thing - forced to eat tiny amount of porridge (what the USA call cream of wheat) - and drink only luke warm water (sips only). Barely any decent sleep.
day 11 - 14 pain very very slowly subsides, eating is still hell, I had a particular sore spot, that anything triggered off immense pain.
14-20 - sore spot subsides feel much better.

TIPS -

1 - first few days, eat like hell - enjoy your last food for a week! Drink tons of water, take meds on time and keep a record, as you can easily forget when doped up.
2 - Don't bother with dairy (ice cream, milk) age old method proves to be problematic - cream coating on tongue and throat can cause gagagging, and you sure as hell can't hock it up due to the pain and risk of bleeding!
3 - Get a big bottle of water, and leave to set at room temperature, keep a rolling-cycle : there is no greater pain on days 4-10 than cold tap water in the morning for meds
4 - Worst pain = waking up (even if it's an nap) - holy hell it hurts so bad you wanna top yourself - get your meds down quick, and shake in agony till they kick in
5 - Chills out a bit in the late morning early afternoon days 4-10, but gets very painful towards late evening - tough luck, can't take extra meds!
6 - The yellow stuff tastes sooooo disgusting you almost spew - nothing gets the taste out better that a throat sweet, but then you suffer the wrath of the cool air sensation when you breathe - I had to live with the extra pain as they taste was sick.
7 - DO NOT CHEW ICE COOL GUM - the cool air sensation is extreme pain
8 - don't talk to people if it hurts - end of
9 - If it hurts - get to the doc for stronger tablets - I did, and the best thing I did
10 - Don't rush back to work till you feel great, that 'little sore bit' will soon inflame and hurt like hell if your job requires you to talk lots.
11 - allow 3 weeks for a 85percent recovery - 4 weeks to feel great
12 - hospital underprescribed me on meds (30mg codeine initially and only 1 week worth! hahahah - quickly went up to 60 when i was ringing them at 2am in agony, and then onto tramadol when i went to AandE in the middle of the night in crippling pain.
13 - Ask hospital beofre hand how much you can take if it gets too much.
14 - there is light at the end of the tunnel - it's just a flaming long tunnel
15 - When you are feeling a bit better (after the crippling pain days 4-10) don't get to exited and jump around (do normal things) - I went for a pint of cider - HOLY HELL IT HURT and sent my 'supposedly feeling better ish' throat into a frenzy.
16 - Take daily pics - thet help to proove to yourself that you are getting better (after day 4 it really starts to heal - the forst 3 days get worst as the scabs form)
17 - Moral support from these forums really got me through this - you are not alone! read journals is excellect (like this one)
18 - Get a small mirro and light - check throat every hour for bleeding ( I was very paranoid, but had no bleeding)
19 - get ice cubes in freezer in case you get bleeding, and you need to gargle ice water to stop it
20 - I survived by lying on sofa, playing PS3, on the internet hour a day, and TV - big warm blanket
21 - place your meds strategically - nothing worse than waking in immense pain, having to go downstairs to get tablets, then back upstairs to your luck warm water, then back down for a mouthwash! I took my morning meds up to bed, with water - so when I awoke in a scream of agony I could ram the tablets down my throat and endure what I call the 15mins of HELL waiting for them to kick in.
22 - Learn something new with all the time you have off - I learned how to use a MIDI keyboard and play a few chords - now i am hooked on it!
23 - Spend lots of money on ebay - very theraputic :-)
24 - Take care of all them tasks that you never get around to doing (pay bills, fill out forms) - helps time pass
25 - Don't answe the phone days 4-10 if you don't have to, it really really hurts to talk
26 - don't be alone - I was, and was very isolated, time is slow, and you loose sense of day and night!
27 - WSC real 09 snooker on PS3 is excellent to burn time! LOL - blinking loved it!
28 - Enjoy loosing 5-10 pounds - I did! but soon put them back on
29 - if you ain't reay to go back to work, tell the doc - they are very sympathetic and will wirte you a big long sick leave note without question.
30 - Post on forums - theraputic
31 - It'll all be worth it - IT WILL!

Good luck - you made the right choice - heed my warnings on pain, and take some of my advice, and that of others - I would certainly learn from others mistakes :-)

32 - You will likely be constipated - get some pills for that.

Good Luck - MrP.

hi,
Im 28 and had my tonsils out (in the UK) on friday the 12th march 2010, Im currently on day 4. I read a few blogs when I decided to have them out but when this freaked me out big time I made the decision to not read any again till after my op. The first few days have been going ok Im about about pain level 3 out of 10 although last night I have really bad stomach ache and skipped my nightly paracetemol which Im paying for now!! Oh and btw for anyone who is in the UK im on 1gram paracetemol 4 times daily and 400mg ibuprofen and 625mg augmentin (which is the antibiotics) 3 times daily all prescribed.
Im drinking so much water its truely incredible- yesterday I drank around 4 litres and I didnt even notice. Im able to eat pretty much anything and have been able to from day 1. Ive just read all the blogs and replies on here and am about to hit the pain threshold and am not much looking forward to it I was hoping to be one of the lucky ones!
Im sleeping for around 12 hours a day, my throat is sore, the pain is starting to spread a little to my ears and its uncomfortable- not painful though to talk. So here I go into day 5- wish me luck!

I am 30 and due to go in for a tonsillectomy tommorow. I am not sure what method they are going to use on me yet. I have been reading through to see what the worst and better case scenarios kind of are i guess and what to kind of expect. Its not the first time i have had any surgery, but am still quite bricking it to be honest!!! I have been looking for imformation about how long it is roughly that you can start singing after one, because i am a vocalist, and am not really sure how this procedure will effect this and how long it will be until i can again. I tried looking through google and only got up a lot of other things that i didn't actually ask lol So i was wondering if anyone thats posting here that has had the procedure is a singer as well, and knows how long it was for them to recover enough to sing again? I also smoke as well, and im really thinking that now would be a good time to try quitting it too!!I'm thinking after reading this that I'l be in too much pain to even try to smoke after as well ! well guys i hope your recoveries go well, im pre op tommorow will be my first day post op so wish me luck!

i Had my tonsils taken out on feb 12 2010. Im on day six. im a 23 year old male. the first two days was easy...then it
became pretty painful. i was taking pain medication and it was making me feel sick and constipated. Ive thrown up twice so far. it's different when you puke without tonsils. the stuff comes out of ur nose too. It was disguesting. After the second time i threw up, i had some bleeding the next morning. i put ice water in my mouth and put ice pack on my throat til it stopped. I dont want to go in and get cautized again as that would set me back a few days. it would really suck. im hoping ill be okay in the next 2 days. Remember everyone , no matter how bad you feel. Remember the Balance of Life. As bad as you feel now. that's how much better you are gonna feel in a few days when you get to do all of the things you miss. That cheeseburger is going to be amazing.

I am 33 years... 3 weeks passed the op.... and have gone through a number of posts during first two weeks... while my throat was at its worst.......

As I felt better...... all blog reading stopped... So I concluded that.... most people tend to write more... while it is still hurting them...

Here I am with few tipes which I plan to post to as many blogs as I can manage :

1. Reading blogs before and after the surgery does help... so read and implement as many tips as you can manage.
2. Drinking water and eating to the maximum does help a lot..... so irrespective of pain....... drink and eat as much as you can......

3. Gargle with Hydrogen Peroxide after end of first week !! That’s the best advice I can give you... and have not read anywhere else so far.......
Bring it from any chemist.... dilute it (1 :4) and gargle at least 4 to 5 times a day from 2nd week onwards till 3rd week end... or
till yours scabs go...

Post completion of 2nd week.... I am absolutely back to normal.... on beginning of 3rd week.. I also went to a trek on nearby mountain...

I have started consuming drinks in modest quantity and it;s absolutely going fine..

I eat absolutely everything........ from 3rd week onwards including munches..... and spicy stuff......

On account of this operation, I have managed to get rid of my smoking.... which is the best part of the story ...... wish I manage to get rid of it permanently.......

For any query … mail to mrpd555 ( at ) y a hoo (.) com

I hope you guys recover as fast…

The pain in second week could be terrible…… but soon you will rock…….. so stay put and enjoy your recovery……..

I'm a 19 year old female, wrapping up day 11 of my tonsillectomy recovery. I'm still in pain because my scabs have not come off yet - pretty sure they're a bit late in coming off. Here's my best advice to people who recently had or are going to have the procedure:

- TAKE YOUR PAIN MEDS. What surprised me the most about the procedure is how much my meds helped. When I don't take them, the pain is agonizing, and unfortunately the medicine wears off well before I'm due for the next dose, but I feel MUCH better almost immediately after taking my dose. There were several times when I slept through a dose, thinking "hey I won't be awake, I'll sleep through the pain" - you will wake up and want to die. Just don't do it.

- EAT BEFORE AND AFTER TAKING YOUR MEDS. If you don't you will throw up. And the only thing worse than open sores in your throat is throwing up with open sores in your throat. It's usually too painful to eat right before your dose since you're too far from your previous does, but try to get food in your stomach right after taking them. I figured this out pretty early on and therefore only had two vomiting episode.

-And finally, for me at least, ITS NOT A TOTAL NIGHTMARE. Though I do feel my recovery is taking a bit longer than most peoples' I've read about, I haven't had the horror story you see so often repeated on these websites. Yes, it hurts a lot, but medicine helps. I was not throwing up a lot, I didn't dehydrate, and I have not lost a tremendous amount of weight. In my experience, I was able to eat soft foods very early on - pasta, mashed potatoes, soup, hardboiled eggs, etc. The other day I even cut up sushi into tiny pieces and ate it because i was craving it so much.

YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS! It's painful, but it's really wasn't as bad as everyone told me it would be. :-P love and good luck!! xoxo

Laser Tonsillectomy - An Alternative to Traditional Surgery

Advantages of Laser Tonsillectomy:
Faster recovery.
Performed in the office instead of the operating room.
No general anesthesia.
Patients can drive themselves home.
Return to work the next day.
Eligible for reimbursement under many PPO plans.

Laser Tonsillectomy Treats:
Chronic tonsillitis.
Recurrent tonsillitis.
Tonsiloliths (tonsil stones).
Snoring and sleep apnea related to enlarged tonsils.

Laser tonsillectomy (Laser Tonsil Ablation) is performed in the office in about 20 minutes using only local anesthesia and allows patients to return to normal activity the next day! Rather than endure the severe pain associated with traditional surgery, many patients can now choose to treat their tonsils comfortably and conveniently in the office, using a state of the art laser treatment. Rather than removing the tonsils in the operating room, many patients can be effectively treated by laser - vaporizing the outer surface of the tonsil, eliminating infection and significantly reducing their size. Laser tonsillectomy is indicated for the treatment of chronically infected tonsils, "tonsil stones" (tonsiloliths) and enlarged tonsils. It is appropriate for patients over the age of 16.

hey.. 30yo female about to have tonsillectomy due to stones and chronic infection. my tonsils look pretty tiny - almost non-existant (maybe this is a plus for the recovery??) - but sure as hell have badness going on in there that i just cant suffer through any more.

so the thing is right now i need to decide whether to get my tonsillectomy done in Germany where i am living or wait and fly back to Aus where i have my parents to look after me.

in Germany its standard procedure that you stay in hospital for a week after the surgery. Seems like this could be a good thing - constant pain meds, hydration by drip etc.

bad side is my german is limited and i will be on my own.
also after the week is up i will be without anyone to really help me at home and this could be pretty tough.

down side to going home is that the whole trip is going to take a long time - because I have to wait for a surgery opening after i arrive in the country. this is really problematic for work and general life stuff.

not sure if anyone has any thoughts, but i guess im mostly wondering if am crazy to be contemplating doing this pretty much on my own in germany.. or whether the idea of a week in hospital sounds like a dream for recovery..

thanks for any feedback :-)

I am a 21 yr old female who just got the surgery done yesterday. The week before I got the surgery done, I made a pea puree soup from Barefoot Contessa on ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed ... it really helps. I have been eating very soon after the surgery because of this nice, cold, filling, and nutritious soup.

Definitely worth a try.
