Hello, I'm a 32 year old female on day 5 post-op. My doctor warned me it would be at least 10 days for recovery time. I didn't believe him. OMG I want to die. I'm in pain, my meds make me sick to my stomach, I'm still bleeding (a little), and I can't seem to get a good night sleep. I'm on oxycodone (5-10 ML every 4 hours).

I got bored today and had to run to the grocery store for more cold items (sherbert, jello, etc)...I broke out into this awful sweat and I thought I was going to pass out. Bad idea learned the wrong way. I'm also a single mother and my daughter had fifth's disease one day prior to surgery and now has an upper respiratory infection.

Will there be relief anytime soon? I ended up taking off the rest of the week from work but if I don't go back next Monday, I'm afraid I'll get fired. Just not sure I'm going to be back to normal by then.

I had my tonsils out 16 days ago at age 54. Absolutely the worst experience of my life. The first week was a breeze! About day 5 had extreme pain that didn't go away even with pain meds. Called in and was prescribed a steroid. Day 8 got diarrhea and proceeded to get sick with flu symptoms. Went to ER and was given a shot of ibuprofen. Helped with pain greatly. Was told to stop steroids. Was very sick for 4-5 days. Day 13 extreme ear and throat pain. Ears burned. Went to urgent care. Sinus Infection!!! Prescribed antibotic. Pain is not going away!!! I want my life back!

I am a 20 year old male college student and OMG.I had my tonsils removed 7 days ago and im in the worst pain ever. It's relieving reading other people's experiences through these tough times. Im so sick of drinking that nasty lortab. At first it was okay, but after 5 days drinking it every fourth hour, it tastes like doo doo. My girlfreind claims my breath smells like dead fish and butt. That is to say the least. The post- op plan suggest i gargle with 1 part mouthwash and 3 parts water if breath is foul, well my breath is far beyond foul.

I am an optimist but this recovery is hell. Day five is when it become really bad. I was up all night with throbbing ear and throat pain. Im hoping to feel better soon but in the meantime ill continue watching fox news, playing xbox(call of duty), and trade nations on ipod touch. If you play this game add me "Zits_Mcgee" if not and intend on doing so "warning" this game is extremely addictive and DO NOT buy the magic beans you will go broke unless you have self control. well that's all for now. Good luck my fellow tonsillectomy victims..

I'm 19 and had my tonsils out 2 weeks ago. The pain is now manageable, most of the "white gunk" has gone and most of the swelling has gone down.

However, I still can't drink properly. If I try to drink fast (any more than a sip) it comes straight out of my nose. I just wondered if this has happened to anyone else and is it permanent?!

Also, I'm still getting some bleeding occasionally and my throat looks HORRIBLY asymmetrical at the back. One side of the soft pallet is much higher than the other and there is a huge whole in on of the flaps of skin behind where my right tonsil used to be.

I AM MISERABLE. I seem to be the only person in this thread to say it but I wish I had never chosen to have my tonsils out. The recovery has been truly terrible and I am left wish a horrible looks throat and an inability to drink properly.

My advice to anyone whose about to have a tonsillectomy - DON'T!

This is my third day of recovery including the day of the operation.  I didn't drink that much during the day of the operation.  I was able to drink cold water and soup the next day.  Also ate some cold milk pudding yesterday and today.  I don't have any pain other then when swallowing.  I take ibuprofen 3 times a day which helps with the throat pain when swallowing.  If I don't take ibuprofen, it's even more painful when swallowing but with the medicine it's not that bad.  I feel like my recovery is going alright but I'm kind of worried about the stuff I read on the internet saying that it gets worse between days 3-7.  I hope that won't be my case.  I hope it won't take me much longer to feel 100% fine since I already lost about 7 lbs.

I hope y'all will recover as quickly as possible.  Feel better!

I hope you're feeling well. I'm 30 years old and my surgery is scheduled for January 4th, 2012. I'm scared but I have no choice to get my tonsils removed. Any tips on how to deal with my surgery would be great!

Thanks.

Thank you, I've been looking everywhere for a straight answer about how long it will take for these holes to close. I am post op day #10 and finally feeling a lot better. My scabs have fallen off and things are still tender back there. The base of my tongue still feels swollen and doesn't move freely. My ears still hurt and I know I have a ways to go, but I was looking in my throat at these "caverns" thinking "Okay, what about these?" Thank you for keeping a blog.

I'm 19 and just had mine out this morning. Apparently my left tonsil was so swollen and infected it broke so he had to dig it out in pieces. (as awful as that sounds) physically, I feel fine like walking around and stuff, but man.... swallowing hurts so so bad :( I know I'm not the only one going through it but it's like how bad can it get? I want it to go away!

not true. i am 19 yr old female (in uk) going onto day 7, after having had a laser tonsillectomy. my surgeon has recommended for me to take 2-3 weeks rest, i am taking prescription painkillers, antibiotics, pain-relieving mouth wash and ibuprofen, and pain is still present. healing process sounds just about the same as all the other posts i've read, minus bleeding because the skin is sealed with the laser. and as for during the operation, i'm pretty sure it took longer than 20 minutes, i was put to sleep using general anaesthetic, and it was done properly in theatre. the surgeon also accidentally lasered part of my tongue so i am having to deal with the pain of that too.

I am 26 years old from the Philippines, on Day 5 of my tonsillectomy. Glad to say. I did not experience as much hell as most people described it here. I did 1 week research of course before the   surgery took place, and I was totally scared to death. I totally wanted to make sure that I was ready or if I should go thru it or not..

And so I did..

OP -  They put me to sleep before bringing me in to the OR, last thing I remembered was the doctor, who was my Cousin, Raul Jerry Isaguirre ENT, held my hand and asked me if I were ready.. then, I dozed off to sleep - I swear I did not feel anything during the operation.. The approach they had was thru cauterization.

When I woke up/Day1: I did not feel any pain (yet) at all, although my uvula was swollen like hell.  Lunch time: I was able to even eat congee or rice porridge at room temperature. I did not feel any pain just yet, but I also did not want to bruise up my wound by eating anything that's too much for me to handle. I went on with the soft diet as planned. The doctors also informed my mom that it would be best to have some Vanilla ice cream ready for me to eat! (twas a treat!) (most people in the blogs say this is not advisable as it would create a thick film on the throat and blah blah... IT MADE ME FEEL BETTER!)
Dinner time: Had the same rice porridge or congee, shredded chicken.. then lots and lots and lots of water.. as I know if I do not hydrate to much, the scabs would grow thick and it would be painful when they fall off.
MEDS: I was only given paracetamol for pain killers, as I was allergic to ibuprofen and aspirin the doctor was too careful.. I also had cefuroxime thru IV. It felt like brandy thru the veins.. but tolerable.. ;) Went to sleep..

Day 2: Pain was a bit more intense. but still not that much.. same routine done from day 1.

Day 3: Ear ache started to become present. It wasn't as painful as you think it would be, just kind of like.. a nail was stuck on your ear... but believe me, it was not that much painful, just uncomfortable. and as for my throat, it only felt like I got to swallow or had a tuna fish' bone stuck on my throat. If you keep your mind out of it, it would not hurt that much.. on this day, this day, I had fish soup, mashed potatoes, KFC fries and mushroom soup. and of course congee still .. pain was not that bad really. Got tired of the vanilla ice cream as I got to finish a whole half Gallon by myself.. :P Doctor also Upgraded my painkiller from paracetamol to Celebrex as I told him I had it before and I am not allergic to it.

Day 4: Sweet lord, I moaned in pain when I woke up in the morning but I managed.. I also learned that sleeping to opposite of the side that hurts the most would ease the pain.. in my case the right ear killed me as in was the one most infected with pus. I still managed to eat lasagna lol! mashed potatoes with gravy and KFC fries. nom!
I just made sure I had ice cold water at hand each time. Doctor also ordered that Cefuroxime thru IV be stopped as I was to be discharged. so I had to swallow a big capsule (forced) of CEFUROXIME. and who was I to complain. I did, specially with the thought of it making me feel better.
Day 4 night: HOME now.. not being such a drama queen, I was able to manage and have some mac and cheese, bread and sandwich spread. boiled egg and my new best friend - > http://www.philamfood.com/images/P/0673367469980.jpg

I pops! IT EASED MY PAIN AWAY each time.. mild pain every after meal. so I had to make sure that I had one of these.

Doctor also prescribed me some Difflam gargle and man does it feel good. it has anesthesia so it numbs the wound. hope it helps you too..

Day 5 today: EAR PAINS!! YES PLEASE! I also started coughing really bad as the scabs are getting itchy.. but it still not as painful as people described it in the internet blogs.

Anywaaay.. hope the tips help! and PLEASE GET YOURSELF some of those ice pops. it's  heavenly.
