I was just trying to make a point....Dr. Norman says that he treats his patients like family and that is just not true. Like I said before, he is an excellent surgeon he just needs to work on his personality. He is so darn cocky, conceited, God-like, rude, etc.! There were so many times that I just wanted to tell him to go *#@% himself but restrained myself; I already paid the $1,250 fee and I didn't think it would be real smart of me to tell off Dr. Norman when he was soon about to slice my neck open. If I treated my customers the way that he treats his patients I'd be fired in a heartbeat. Why does he have to be that way? He knows that he could be that way without any consequences, it's not like there are a ton of parathyroid experts out there that he has to compete with! He is the best and he knows that. People will still go to him no matter how crappy he treats them because he is the best and they don't have a choice. I did read that Dr. Larian in California is also an excellent surgeon and he treats his patients with compassion, unlike Norman. I am grateful to Dr. Norman for curing me, I just wish he could have been warmer and more caring, it would have made the experience a whole lot better!!

Isn't it a shame that so many doctors have this type of attitude? Try being their nurse or working in their office. If they treat patients this bad imagine how their help is treated?

Thank goodness though in my medical experience I've only been to 2 or 3 that share this attitude. All I can say when I leave their office is I'm never stepping foot in that place again and I don't!

Pebbles - I'm glad that your surgery was a success and that you are feeling better. I am sorry that you had some bad experiences in the process. Actually, there are many excellent parathyroid surgeons and most of them treat patients very well. I have corresponded with and read posts from a number of parathyroid patients in the last year and a half and many of them have had successful surgery with a number of different doctors. So far as I know, none of them charges a fee to look at your records. It's true that Dr Norman has done more parathyroidectomies than anyone else. That's all he does and he usually does them very quickly. That doesn't necessarily mean that he is the best surgeon. He does do a great sevice by educating people with his website.

That said, there are many things that can keep surgery day from running smoothly. I was fortunate enough to have my surgery with Dr Larian and I also sat in a chilly waiting room for 2+ hours. I wished that I had brought a long sleeved shirt. The surgery before mine ran long. Mine ran even longer and he had another surgery after mine. It was about 8 PM when he came to see me in the recovery room. It was a very long day for him but the patients were given whatever time was necessary. By the time I was up the next morning he had already tried to call me.

I had only a 10 minute scan that day so it wasn't bad but I had had the half day kind several months before and I spent much of the time thinking how much I would need my chiropractor when it was over. I thought the same thing when I woke up from surgery. They do find uncomfortable positions to stretch your neck out.

I'm glad that you are able to look on the positive side of your experience but you are correct in saying that patients should be treated with respect. Where would those docs be without us anyway? Try to find something to laugh about. You'll heal faster. -mass-
