Hi I have had similar pains when breathing 2 years ago and continue to this day. I have seen specialists dealing in heart, lungs, rheumatologists, nephrologists as I have also had accompanying joint pains. I was diagnosed with pericarditis (inflammation of heart sack), pluerisy (inflammation around the lungs) and the latest has been costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs) which is the most likely and hardest to diagnose. I have had a hydrocortisone jab in my butt which helped a bit but I have to say in this cold weather it has been horrendous. I am so breathless and because I have been on steroids along the way and in too much pain to exercise I have put on weight which does not help. I was told by the Dr that any chest pain should be reported to the hospital at once...so anyone reading this pronto to your doc or hospital. They take chest pains seriously so dont worry they will think you are a time waster!! Better to be safe than sorry.

I am now waiting for a kidney biopsy as they are considering vasculitis (don't ask) too hard to explain. Fingers crossed they sort me out as I am sick and tired of being sick and tired!!!!

I am a dentist in Marina Del Rey California, and I treat many patients with TMJ and Craniofacial pain. 70% of all patients with TMJ also have neck pain. Because of the way your rib cage is connected to your lungs, movement of the ribs apart opens the lungs and collapsing the ribs together decreases lung volume. There are two ways to breathe. Breathing up, which uses the neck muscles (bad) or breathing out, which uses your diaphram and abdominal muscles (good). Incorrect breathing patterns, such as breathing up, will cause neck pain as shown in this youtube video I made for my patients with neck pain due to breathing incorrectly:

This is a very difficult thing to find an answer for. The Vagus nerve runs through the pharynx. Sometimes, this nerve becomes hypersensitive, commonly as a result of LPR (laryngo-pharyngeal reflux). This is called Vagal Neuropathy. LPR is very common, so you may have it. Signs of LPR include frequent throat clearing, post nasal drip, hoarseness, and/or cough. Many people with LPR have only one of these symptoms. Since the Vagus nerve modulates bronchoconstriction, many asthma researchers have noted the connection between LPR (aka silent reflux) and asthma. It's possible you don't have asthma, so you should have a pulmonary function test and methacholine challenge to be sure. The fact that your symptoms get better when you're in the shower suggests that soothing your pharynx helps. To treat the throat pain and your asthma, ask your doctor about aggressively treating your allergies and LPR: 1. ask your doctor to prescribe a protein pump inhibitor (PPI) such as Nexium (40 mg/day for 6 months). 2. Start allergy shots (even low-grade allergies irritate your throat). 3. Rest your throat: avoid mouth breathing, yelling, talking for long periods. 4. Avoid foods that cause reflux, and avoid caffeine and alcohol. 5. raise the head of your bed 4 to 6 inches. 6. Eat foods that coat your throat: yogurt and honey are excellent. 7. Use a humidifier in your bedroom at night. 8. Exercise every day, but avoid mouth breathing. One final note: Vagal Neuropathy is treated off-label with certain anti-depressants.

Beginning yesterday my throat began hurting and every time I swallow it hurts a lot and it just hurts breathing and sitting doing nothing. It hurts to laugh and talk loud. About every 5-10 minutes today I would suddenly feel this pain that felt like a knife shooting down my throat and even down into my chest a bit. It makes me stop whatever I'm doing. It doesn't feel like a sore throat does and feels like something is shooting down my throat although nothing is. My mom thought it had to do with my going back to playing tennis after being out for 2 months due to an ankle injury. But I'm starting to think against it. I have no idea what it is and ibueprofen didn't help. It's scaring me...does anyone have any idea what it could be? Oh and I'm 16 years old.

i have been having similar pains too, i get a sharp pain from the left side of my chin it then shoots down the left side of my throat and then straight through my chest. when this happens i find it really hard to breath espically breathing in, once this pain has eased i do get a slightly easier pain into my upper back for another 10 minutes. Im at the doctors tomorrow so hope they will tell me whats going on.
