Hi everyone,

I found this posting back in Feb of this year and gave some background info on myself and have been reading other postings. I started experiencing all these same things after I started taking Zoloft (or the generic form is Sertraline). It came on 3 days after I started taking it and then after I had to increase the dosage a month later, it came on again worse. I never experienced anything like this before this medication. So I go into my doctor about 4 months ago to find out that I gained 15lbs in over a year since being on this medication, so my doctor took me off the Sertaline and put me on Lexapro. I spoke to him about this allergy thing that was happening and he couldn't seem to figure it out at that time. After reading this information, I think I came to the conclusion that for me and my body that when my body reached it's max on that medication (Sertaline), my histamine tolerance level hit it's max and had my allergic reactions. Now that I have been on Lexapro even though they tend to treat for the same thing, they are not the exact same drug and their chemical make up is different and I haven't had an episode since. I talked with my doctor about histamine intolerance and he said it's different for everyone. It could be an outside trigger that once it builds up in your system, your body then releases the histamines and out comes different issues and it can get worse and worse. I noticed someone posted about Excedrin and Ibuprofen and I tend to take the Excedrin Tension of Excedrin Migraine but I have also done that for yrs and for me that doesn't cause the issue but for someone else, it may.

I also agree with one of the postings in here about the DAO (diamine oxidase) and having a deficiency with that. DAO has something to do with the way the histamine breaks down in the body, if I read that correctly and then the intolerance part kicks in with your body. From what the doctor is saying is that more than anything that someone that has this histamine intolerance, it comes more from a chemical other than food. Now, there could be a chemical on the food that after a portion of time, your body builds it up and then whammo! So, I guess for everyone-you just have to figure out how it started maybe, and go back to that point. Thankfully for me, it was a huge difference in my life that made it stand out, but for others it may not be so easy. I think I have kicked it, but just to be on the safe side, I carry benadryl with me no matter where I go because if it does happen, I need 3 pills in order for it to stop after a 2hrs or so. Because I tend to have this histamine intolerance, who is to say that maybe some other chemcial might not make my body have the problem but right now I think it was the generic form of Zoloft that did it because I would have had a reaction by now. I was getting them every 1-3 months and it's been a good 4 months since I have started the Lexapro and probably 5 months since a reaction.

So there is hope out there but you just have to stay on top of what your body is doing to figure it out. We all are the best decision makers for our own bodies-doctors are people that only know as much as they research in their area. Good luck everyone and I will keep you posted if anything else happens or come across anything. I hope this somewhat helps out.

Lolasmom,
Thanks for the reply. She just finished a 24 hour urine test and has some blood test to do soon.

In the next weeks or so we hope to have results and be on our way to the histamine diet.

Thanks for your input, I apprecaite the info on the b6

I saw a new allergist today and after telling him my symptoms he said they were the classic histamine response.  He asked if I took much Ibuprofen or aspirin - I am an Excedrin addict. He said that a very small group of allergy sufferers have a response to these medications (he explained how it worked but I didn't fully understand what he said). It was along the lines that the medication builds up in your system until you have a histamine response. He said meds like Zyrtec would help a little, but typically the symptoms start to subside before the antihistamine takes full effect. He encouraged me to cut all aspirin and ibuprofen use and use Tylenol or Excedrin Tension instead. Gonna give it a try and see what happens. I am 50, but other than seasonal allergies I don't have any other medical or GI problems and honestly believe this isn't IBS or some of these other thinks. I am certain that this is a response to histamine release in my body.

I just had my 2nd episode! The first was one mild and lasted 1 hour..3 weeks later I had a morfe violent attack which included feeling that my lips were swollen, light headed, stomache ache, diarreah, itchy palms..only lasted 1/2 an hour but it kicked my Butt! So I want to ask some questions to see if any of us has OTHER simular things happening.
1) I started a low carb diet which is mostly protein about 1 month ago
2) I started running (Adreniline release)
3) I have noticed in the past 6 months that I get a lot of mucus, like I am constantly having to hard swallow (I do not spit them up..I would puke)
4) Runny nose without having a cold or being sick...just runny

So I looked up histime release in my body. I found that the runny nose and mucus production and Histime are all related. From what I read:
Histamine intolerance is due to a (temporary) deficiency or an inhibition of the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO). DAO is the enzyme responsible for the degradation of histamine. Although DAO is virtually found in the whole body, the bowels constitute its most important site of action. The enzymatic activity of DAO determines the rate of degradation of histamine. If a DAO deficiency and / or inhibition is present, the organism will not be able to degrade quickly enough the histamine taken in with food or released from body cells and the symptoms of histamine intolerance will occur.

So i have found a few products online that help with DAO definiency they are:
Histame and Muco Stop. I am going to do more research on both products before I spend the money.

I called my Dr and cant get in till December...so until then I will log my food, attacks, duration etc..and start some sort of natural enzyme to fight the histimine build up in my body.

Please let me know if anyone has noticed the Mucus/Runny nose connection with your attacks.

Thank you!

My daughter also suffers from excessive mucus. She does however have to spit it out, as it is too much to swallow. She has had this for about 6 years. We were always to match this up with seasonal allergies and it does seem to coincide with them but she also has this in the dead of winter. And also has it when most high allergy season has past.

She is never without a tissue, has had a drippy nose for as long as I remember.

She also has had eczema of some sort on her upper arm, since she was little and is itchy but doesn’t seem to itch on those areas. She gets random hives constantly.

She has bouts of vomiting, seems her system can only take so much of something and once she vomits she is fine. (This is unrelated to virus or food poisoning)

She is often dizzy.

It takes her most of the morning to empty her bowels and until then she does not feel well, she will be fatigued even with having good nights sleep. She does periodically have some insomnia but this is unrelated to the fatigue on those days we understand the fatigue.

Her stomach never really feels right but by afternoon she feels better than the mornings.

You are the first person that I have seen with the excessive mucus production. I have been searching for this for years and always just come up with that the body makes mucus to carry away things out of the body I suppose they could be talking about histamine there. But there never was much on how excessive hers was.

We are looking into the Histamine Intolerance; right now we are waiting for the doctor to call about where to go for testing. Until then she is going to keep eating the same way for the testing and once tested she will begin the low histamine diet.

We are hoping this is the cause of her issues. She also gets the flushing on her face but also sometimes her feet are bright red anyone have that?

Kay

Hi Kay,

Your poor daughter! I do not have the dizzy spells like your daughter does but I have noticed an increase of naseau in the mornings, so much so that I took a pregnancy test (negative). It is not horrible just enough that I can't eat till about 2 hours after I wake up. I have also had potty issues but I think this is due to the low carb diet which is common.

My exzema has also acted up more, I have a very small amouny on my lower arm and use a cream that calms it down.

I have read that Vitamin B6 helps control the production of histamine which is done in the intestines, but B6 on its own is hard on the digestive track so you would want to take it as part of a B Complex. There are a few good ones out there ones is called Stress Reliefe (who cant use that??).

I really think there is a corralation between the mucus, runny nose, Nauseu, dizzyiness and the histimine production. I have also noticed that I can feel my hands "tingle" during the day, as if an attack is just under the surface..my lips also feel kinda Numb during the day..I have started taking Claritin during the day and that helps a lot.

gee, someplace i responded to you Lolasmom, not sure where went, any way thanks for the response and the input and the info on b6 I appreciate it. she finished a 24 hour urine test and has some blood work to do, we hope to be getting results within the next few weeks and be on our way to the low histamine diet.

Hi there, I have also had attacks such as this once a month for almost two years. Starts with itchy palms and soles of feet. Then severe cramping immediate diaraera, and usually two or three power vomits. I feel exhausted and lack energy after the attack, stomach is in agony severe cramps. I pretty much have to lay down sweat it out and wait for each bout of vomit or diaraera, my heart is also racing flat out.   I have a stressful job, been trying to conceive for 2 and a half years and had family problems to deal with. I have been tested for carcinoid syndrome which was negative my doctor decided that the attacks were like severe panic attacks/stress/depression she has put me on Fluexotine anti depressant and I have not had an attack for three months. I actually feel the best I have in many years. Yay! Fingers crossed she hit the nail on the head and I don't ever have another attack.

Hi, I have been experiencing the same thing for six months and finally went to the doctor about it. I am 31yrs.with three small children and didn't want to mess around with serious illness. They first did some blood work and then sent me in for an ultra sound. Then I got my answer: The problem is nodules on the liver. When I looked up liver disease, I realized I have other symptoms too. Now I have to have an MRI to determin what knd of nodules they are. Usually benign, especially in women but still have to look in to it to be sure.

I still don't have a reply for the strange things happening during these attacks, my kinesiologue thinks it's a bacterie, some ancient bacterie that's coming up more and more. I'm now undergoing acapunture, let's see if it will help, keep you posted. I'm free of attacks since 1 October but anyhow, they seem to be less in winter!

Just got in from eating pizza and within an hour had incredibly itchy palms of hands and soles of feet, nausea and an upset stomach. Also had alot of bread at lunch. Have taken anti-histimine tablet and started to all settle down. A random allergic reaction??

My first episode was right after my pregnancy. Could you please let us know if you have been free of those attacks since this post and did you do any tests? Any results? Would appreciate your answer. Thanks a lot! Jacqueline (from Europe)

Hi, Ive just found this forum, I'm a 40 year old female with 3 kids.

My symptoms are red, tingly, very itchy palms. A horrible nauseated feeling in the stomach, like I'm really hungry or empty (when I really don't feel like eating). I feel like going to the toilet & often do, while also feeling like to vomit. My face becomes extremely red & even the whites of my eyes are red with a feeling of great pressure, like my head will explode. I feel faint.  This has happened to me about 7 times over 21 years. The first time I was 19 years old.  The episodes last for about 15 minutes, then I'm back to normal, like it never happened. I'm having a reaction to something, but what?? From what Ive read, I think its a build up of histamine in my body.

I just wanted to ask all the other people that have posted here, are they children from Vietnam veterans? It would be interesting to see how many are...

Hello all...well after reading all the posts I decided to take an anti-histimine everyday and I have not had an attack in 7 months. I went to the Dr, explained my symptoms and she said "it could be anything" and referred me to an allergis, who I still have not seen. She did say that the symptoms could aslo be related to liver disease, but I figure if the anti-histimines are working ,it must have been the histamine intolerance. She said taking an anti-histimine every day is fine.

So I am attack free and plan on taking them for at least a year, then MAYBE stop and see what happens...I will eventually get the allergy testing done also.

MAYBE AN ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM?????

Hi Again, I posted a few months ago about liver nodules.

I went to a second doctor who said those couldn't be the cause of my illness-- they are  completely benign.

However, the first doctor didn't really know what to do with me so he gave me some really strong antibiotics-- Flagyl and one other. They really messed me up for about a month and I was mad at him.

However, I haven't had a bout with the itchy hands, vomitting since then. It has been 3 months illness free! A friend of mine who struggles with Lyme disease (she takes those same antibiotics regularly) thinks my problem was an infection and that the medicine knocked it out.

Also, DO NOT GO FOR AN UPPER GI Endoscopy "just because". I did that back in February and have struggled with gastritis ever since. Never had a problem with that before, and the GI didn't find anything wrong-- it just caused a problem.

Email me if you have questions about this situation.

I am a 48 year old man, my episodes started 6 months ago. I awake from sleep with itchy hands and feet, heart palpitations and an urge to defacate. I have passed out 3 out of my four episodes, the only time I did not is when I did not try and sit up. The paramedics gave me telfast so the last two non Ambulance episodes i self administered. Each episode lasts one hour and the last stage of recovery is always severe shivering. Very distressing to my wife and 11 year old daughter
