I have been diagnosed with a 19 year old lisfranc tear. My dislocation is 1.2 mm. My orthopedic told me he did not recommend surgery because it can cause arthritis, but referred me to two other physicians he thought could better address my case, both of which are out of town. Are all of you that had the surgery still glad you did it? Do you know anyone who has success with PRP? I would love to talk to any of you willing to share your story. I'd any of you are willing I will register so I can PM you my contact info

Franduke, I tore my lisfranc ligament and it's been misdiagnosed for about 2 years now.
I'm not in pain, but my arch has collapsed somewhat.
I've been told to have physiotherapy and wear an orthotic. I'm happy to do this.
How long did you have no pain/minimal pain until you felt the need to have surgery? Was it months or years?
Also, did you have arthritis before surgery (which I assume was fusion?) - that's my biggest worry.
I was told arthritis WOULD be my future, but not for a long time… can any one shed some light on this?
I'm only 20, so if this is something that will occur, in say, 10 years, it's not very promising!

This is exactly my case - but only 2 years. My arch has fallen. I was told to have physiotherapu and wear an orthotic.
Are there any signs of arthritis after 19 years?
I'd love to talk to any one too, and am willing to register as well.

K Steinbeck…
when you say you had a 'lisfranc injury' what exactly do you mean? Fracture/dislocation/ligament etc?
I've found out I tore a ligament two years ago and was told not to fuse as it will make things worse.
What's your opinion on this?

Hello Franduke!

I'm so glad to red your ousted about your successful surgery and recovery. I was diagnosed over a year ago with the same injury. It "healed" for about a year and I was able to run two more half marathons. Unfortunately while training for yet another race, this injury resurfaced. My podiatrist/surgeon has just (and finally) recommended surgery. I've been waiting custom orthotics for months with little to no relief. Lately the pain is becoming unbearable and is keeping me from being active. I also live in the NYC area and would love a second opinion. Can you provide the name of your surgeon??

I have a question for all that have had long term issues with this problem. I was 13 when I suffered a foot injury, I had xrays done, nothing was broken. I was told it was a sprain. I returned to 2 doctors within a few years due to continued pain and swelling in my arch area. I was told to lay off of it and let it heal, that I most likely had tendon or cartilage damage or scar tissue that was causing problems and that surgery would probably just increase the scar tissue problem. They really had no answers. I lived in a small town with limited doctors. Needless to say I accepted there lack of diagnosis and have lived with this for years. I am 45 now. The severe pain I experienced for years afterwards was a shooting pain that felt like an ice pick being jammed thru my arch, the chronic pain I still feel is more of a stiffness and ache in the joint that is more noticeable while while walking, but pretty much constant. I continue to have limited flexibility and range of motion in this foot compared to the other foot. The ice pick feeling used to happened randomly (no rhyme or reason) while walking or standing with pressure on the foot. For years the ice pick feeling has been mostly absent until recently. Now I am wondering if I should revisit this injury. I have not seen a doctor for this issue since I was young, as I was told there was really nothing to do for it, but after reading these posts I now feel that this type of injury might be what I have had all these years. Do my symptoms sound anything like what you have experienced?

Hi,

I have a recent a lisfranc ligament injury one foot and an old injury in the other which went undiagnosed for many years. I was seeing a podiatrist who seemed to understand the foot well. I went to an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon for my new injury and he seems to be more driven by imaging than my pain or function of my foot. I cannot bear weight on either foot and am in a wheelchair.
I would go for a second opinion but my ins won't allow me to.
Which type of Doctor is better to help with this unfortunate injury?
Please let me know your thoughts.

G'day

Been reading through your stories to try and get more information about the surgery. i'm 21 years old and i recently had an MRI done on my foot i hurt while wrestling. This occurred approximately 10 weeks ago and i have had no treatment on the foot yet. The report said that i had ruptured the major lisfranc ligament joining my first and second metatarsals and its taken small pieces of bone with it. The dislocation was 2.4mm and from what i have read a seperation of 2mm is enough to warrant surgery. I do not have private health so i went to a public system orthopedic doctor, they said that it was too late to do anything about it as it's been 10 weeks since the injury occurred. I found it really strange that they weren't really phased about all the long term effects and the fact i struggled to work as a builder even 10 weeks on. I'm a extremely active person, running, weight lifting and football player so my health is very important for me.

From your experiences, what would you guys recommend to do? should i leave it and hope it repairs itself properly or do i pay to see a private surgeon ?

I have a question for anyone here. I had a previous Lisfranc injury about 20 years ago. I was casted with no surgery for 6 weeks. It took me about 6 months before I could get back to regular sports activity and about a year and a half until my recovery had maxed giving me most of my ability back. I haven’t had any major issue since until yesterday. I ran a half marathon and now I can’t walk at all if I am barefoot. I can walk with a tennis shoe on, it’s best with my titanium orthotic I got after my initial injury. Can anyone tell me if these recovered injuries can resurface like this? Do I need to go see my ortho? I do not even know if he is still in town.
