Hi IcI 10,

I think I have the same thing that you do, it's bacterial vaginosis and happens after taking antibiotic, that why you feel better after taking the probiotics. Sometimes it feels like it could be your urethra but is just inflamation from your vagina. Keep taking the probiotics because it will help you tremendously.

As for preventin utis, you should take one macrodantin (antibiotic) everytime you have sex, and that will prevent them, you don't have to stop having sex. Another thing you can take is d-mannose for prevention, it's totally natural and it works!! As for the macrodanting is an antibiotic specially for utis and it is mild and it wont give a yeast infection.

Sorry about my Inglish, I 'm from Lima, Peru and I think Drs here in Lima help you a lot more with information about how to prevent utis. You can do everything they tell you about peeing before and after sex, but in my case, the only thing that helped me was the macrodanting and the probiotics. Your sex life will change with this antibiotic, and you can take it for years.
I'm not dr but please talk to your dr before taking my advise, it worked for me and I really want to help others like me.

The Microdant (sp) , and any and all antibiotics for anyone is to take an Anit fungal.. I have never heard of taking just 1 pill at time of sex.. It must be said that good hygiene, for both people is a MUST be clean . Pee as soon as possible after sex. Let your partner know if things are too rough, and making the cleaning before and after part of a sexy ritual .. Drink lots of natural water, cut back on man made sugars ..meats and refined foods

For those who have the symptoms of interstitial cystitis.

I have been diagnosed with IC and have had a couple of procedures to help, but they only helped for a little while (approximately 6 months).  I've had two bladder ablations (stretching).  It has been a long while since I had any symptoms, until this morning.  The symptoms used to only come during hormonal times like ovulation and PMS.

I have read through most of everyone's comments and have tried all those suggestions at one point or another.  I have tried a special diet, only noticed avoiding sugar has helped.  Alcohol is definitely something that could cause those symptoms, but I am also allergic to alcohol so I don't drink that much.  The cranberry juice worsens the symptoms.  Pyridium helps with the pain temporarily.  Other pain meds don't really help much.  When I pee I cannot push/force the pee out as this makes the urethra very sore and leaves the pain lingering a lot longer.  For me I have noticed that I must pee after sex or I am asking for it.  When I go to the doctor for this pain, most of the time it is negative for bacteria, but sometimes it is positive and almost always has proteins.

However, I have also been diagnosed with endometriosis as well, which I think relates or causes the other problem especially during hormonal times.  My periods have just started to become heavy again, since having endometriosis removal surgery 4 years ago.  It's been about 2 years since my last UTI symptoms.  Might have to go back for the endometriosis and see what would be next for that.

What has worked for me is: Allegra (antihistamine), a probiotic, and plenty of water.

Overall, I believe my symptoms have come back because I didn't take my probiotic for the last two days and missed my allegra.  Not sure if anyone has tried this combination of an antihistamine and a probiotic.

Does anyone else have allergies?  I have really bad allergies as well and have changed my antihistamine and my UTIs came back...went back to allegra and gone!  Not sure why that is, but my last Urologist said some antihistamines work for those who suffer IC.

Just thought I share my experience with others going through the same issues.  This is a very painful and depressing issue.  It has affected my marriage/sex life.  Good thing my husband is understanding.  Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for sharing that information Darlene, I rarely have sugar or drink and I stopped the cranberry after reading somewhere if its not a uti the cranberry causes further problems. For 5 days now I stopped my morning dose of B complex and the potassium/mag mix and I havent had anything at all, this was after doing a 15day course of those Hiprex though. I do have allergies and its coming into spring and some nights I take Phenergan so maybe your right and antihistamine is helping somehow but some antihistamines cause incontinence and irritation so have to be careful. Also I definatly feel more irritated just before and during the menstral cycle and also have heavy bleeds. Who else on this forum has heavy cycles or allergies?

Oh man, I got a phone call from my doctor today - all cultures came back negative. I am ready to cry, because I am still in pain. Burning sensation in urethra and bladder, coming up now to all over my abdomen and stomach. What in the world is that??? Made an appointment with my Primary Care physician, hoping that he can direct me to a right specialist. My GYN seems to be giving up on me. I only able to relieve my discomfort with pain pills Phenazopyridine 200mg 3 times per day. However, as soon as I stop those - the pain is coming back. I cut down on all my supplements, dropped Vit D. Taking only Mineral Supplement now. Any ideas guys?

Hello Bubble, don't panic because you will be fine. You have to find out first what it is and from there you can move on. If it's only in the urethra, could be a vaginal infection, and taking antibiotics makes it worse. I don't know if it's your bladder because then you would have frecuency and pain with urination. Vaginal infections, could be bacterial or yeast, both can cause irritation in the vagina and urethra because is so close. Pid can cause pain in the abdomen and it happen when bacteria from the vagina travel up to your uterus and ovaries, but I'm not doctor. Could be ic but doesn't sound like it because you would have frecuency and a lot of pain, if it's your bladder try no to eat citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, soda, coffee until you heal, and if it's a vaginal infection try to cut down on carbohidrates and sugars which feed bacteria. Hope your get better soon and remember that our bodies heal with the right treatments. Silvia

That is exactly the issue I had. Pain wouldn't go away. I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis and doc put me on Elavil and recommended a antihistamine. I've had several cystoscopies and everything was "normal". It took a doc to take a sample of my bladder, which was not a painless procedure. Doc said the Elavil helps with the pain and the antihistamine, I am on Allegra 180, somehow helps those with IC. I recommend drinking plenty of water as well as watching the caffeine and sugar. Also, be careful about taking lots of antibiotics, it may cause a yeast infection which also makes the vaginal area sore/hurt and pain with urination. Some people get a resistance to antibiotics, like myself, and end up with the bacteria spreading to their kidneys. Bad enough to have the pain of a UTI and worse to have kidney pain. Take care of yourself!
