I am 18, female and about 5'3. This pain has been coming and going for years, even my sister says she used to have it. I haven't noticed a pattern with how or when it occurs, but it almost always catches me off guard when I try to breathe in deeply with sharp pain. When I let out some air, I'm then stuck with breathing short breaths until the pinch goes away. I have attempted to breathe through the pain, and its only gotten me in worse pain. Only once have I been able to deal with the pain long enough to breathe through it and it sounded like a 'pop'. I don't have a history of any medical problems.

Hello there,

It seems to me that you will have to see your doctor. There are various reasons why you are feeling that much pain and in my opinion you will need to do certain tests such as X-ray to see what is causing the pain which is preventing you to breathe without sharp pain. Maybe you have hurt your ribs during some sports or something else, so you will need X-ray to confirm this or maybe something else is in question.

Anyhow, since you are 18 years old it is probably some kind of injury. I hope that you will resolve your problem soon and that you are going to be fine. Good luck and keep us posted.

I have this problem too and have had it for years. The way I make it stop hurting is I force as much air out of my lunges until I feel a click. And then it stops. When I was younger I was diagnosed with "costachondritis". Basically the cartilage between your ribs and sternum inflame and cause pain. What I also found is when my back/shoulders are tight it makes the pain more frequent. This is because your muscles attach to your ribs are right and when breathing in they are not able to give and instead pull from the cartilage causing a sharp pain. Like I said, force as much air out as possible and see if it stops.

This sounds exactly what I have but I don't have it on a regular basis..it just comes at random..sometimes I don't get it for a long time even then just randomly it happens. Is this a bad syndrome like dangerous or anything? Or something to be concerned about??
