Wow, sounds a lot more common than I thought it would be. Mine is in my left ear and happens several times a day. When I am sitting relaxing. Sometimes when laying down. My head sometimes begins to hurt if it goes on long enough and since it's been going on about 1 1/2 weeks now I am now starting to exhibit some dizziness also. I think I will pay my doc a visit. I don't want to mess with my ears. I usually have "bionic hearing", as my Mom used to say. I used to get a lot of sinus and ear infections, so I wouldn't doubt it if that was it. My sinuses have been acting up, but with no pain.

Good luck everyone, I hope it clears up for us all.

for the person with the heartbeat sound in your ear..........you really need to see a ENT or DOC over this......that is what My ENT had me to look out for.. he asked me if it sounded like a heartbeat or a ocean and I said ocean why>? and he said you don't want it to sound like a heartbeat , that could be a bad thing. He was leaning more to a tumor . so please get it checked out.

I have had this every now and then. I recently start having the tapping in my ear every morning when I wake up. I can usually stop it by simply relaxing. I think it has to do my me clinching my jaw while I sleep. I do sleep with a night guard, but it does not help with the tapping. I found the link below.

"Thumping" or "tapping" in the ear

Do you have ""Thumping" or "tapping" in the ear"? Have you experienced any other symptoms of TMJ Disorder?

Do you live near an airport? Microwave Energy Pulses http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microwave_auditory_effect

I also hear sonar like clicking in only one ear, this is accompanied by a feeling of pressure in my ear similar to descending on a commercial airline. I wasn't one to have ear infections as a child - in fact I don't remember having any ear infections.

A 1998 patent describes a device that can scare off birds from wind turbines, aircraft, and other sensitive installations by way of microwave energy pulses. Using frequencies from 1 GHz to about 40 GHz, the warning system generates pulses of milliseconds duration, which are claimed to be sensed by the birds' auditory systems. It is believed this may cause them to veer away from the protected object.

I believe it is probably Microwave Energy Pulses, because it isn't Tinnitus and I do live near an airport. The Morse code like clicking was very noticeable early on last night, possibly because it was foggy?? Speaking of foggy, has anyone noticed (besides not being able to concentrate with clicking in one's ear) that after much clicking, a feeling of fogginess, - or a marked difficulty processing what was previously simple mathematical equations?

I wonder how young developing children fair in this kind of environment? I noticed my child often wakes (seemingly due to pain) before I even notice the clicking but can feel the building of pressure in my ear.

Research by University of Washington professor Dr. Henry Lai shows brain cells are clearly damaged by microwave levels far below the U.S. government's "safety" guidelines. Dr. Lai notes that even tiny doses of radio frequency can cumulate over time and lead to harmful effects.

During the Cold War, the Soviets irradiated the U.S. Embassy in Moscow , Russia , with low level, twin-beam microwave radiation. Two successive ambassadors developed leukemia. Other staffers also developed cancer, or their blood showed DNA damage, which precedes cancer.

Recent studies confirm that microwave exposure can:

* Damage nerves in the scalp

* Cause blood cells to leak hemoglobin

* Cause memory loss and mental confusion

* Cause headaches and induce extreme fatigue

* Create joint pain, muscle spasms and tremors

* Create burning sensation and rash on the skin

* Alter the brain's electrical activity during sleep

* Induce ringing ! in the ears, impair sense of smell

* Precipitate cataracts, retina damage and eye cancer

* Open the blood-brain barrier to viruses and toxins

* Reduce the number and efficiency of white blood cells

* Stimulate asthma by producing histamine in mast cells

* Cause digestive problems and raise bad cholesterol levels

* Stress the endocrine system, especially pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, testes

i just want to confirm that tinnitus is a consistent ringing sound, most people get it now and again randomly so its likely you know the sound im talking about, sometimes you hear it when you turn off a tv or if ever you were unfortunate or young enough to experience the sound of a cat alarm , ive had this tapping sound aswell, scared the life out of me, but this is nothing like tinnitus

Palatal myoclonus is a regular, rhythmic contraction of one or both sides of the rear of the roof of the mouth, called the soft palate. These contractions may be accompanied by myoclonus in other muscles, including those in the face, tongue, throat, and diaphragm. The contractions are very rapid, occurring as often as 150 times a minute, and may persist during sleep. The condition usually appears in adults and can last indefinitely. People with palatal myoclonus usually regard it as a minor problem, although some occasionally complain of a "clicking" sound in the ear, a noise made as the muscles in the soft palate contract.

I have the same problem, the tapping is usually in my left ear but has also been in my right ear.  I went to see an ENT and he told be that the tapping was coming from a muscle spasm. The spasm is in the muscle that controls the ear drum.  The ear drum moves depending on the volume of the sound that your around.  So that’s where the sound is coming from.  There are no medicines that help this, but there is a surgery where they go in and cut the muscle but I think that’s too invasive and opted out and just deal with the tapping.

I solved the problem for myself!!!!

I have had tapping in my ears for days. similar to morris code as some people have described it. drives me crazy. I read about someone having spiders in their ears and it freaked me out lol.

On another forum i read about popping your ears, best way i know to do that is a long deep yawn. oddly enough, i was tired and yawned as hard as i could. The pooping stop that instant! Haven't had it return in days now. Absolutely crazy cause this had been going on for days.

Sounds silly but a big long hard yawn did the trick for me lol. Try it out.

hopefully save you a trip to the ent.

Hey so I just got back from the doctor. If you guys have what I have (tapping sound that is NOT your heartbeat) it's a clogged eustachian tube.
Nasal spray steroids/antihistamines/nati pot are all good ways to clear it. Or if you can I met a guy that actually cleans it out manually with some weird looking tool, but I couldn't find anything on that particular method anywhere but him. The doc. gave me some drugs for it so perhaps you can all get the same.

It can happen randomly, but is very common after a cold or anything else that congests that area.

Hope this helps.

I am so glad I have found this page now I know Im not going crazy!!! Been hearing a noise for a couple of months and thought it was in my house until I heard it also in my car. So now I know its in my ears and not my house. I was ready for ripping floorboards etc up because it was really getting on my nerves. Had my children and friends trying to listen out for it too. Its like a morse code sound but its in the distance. It certainly doesnt sound like its from your ears or your head though but it is because I put cotton wool in both ears to block noise out and I could hear it more clearly. Its more clearer when its quiet ie at home or in my car and more so at bedtimes. I really hope it goes because it is driving me insane. Does anyone have any advice of how to get rid of it or what I could recommend off the doctor to get to the bottom of it. Any help or advice offered I would appreciate. Thank you.

I finally have a way to describe what's going on with me, thanks to these posts! It's a constant Morse Code type of clicking in my ear, mostly at night when my head is on a pillow. It drives me crazy and worries me that it's a symptom of a condition that will get worse in time. While there are several posts about this symptom, I haven't yet seen anyone who knows what causes it or what the treatment is. I've been to numerous doctors and had countless tests, including brain scans. I am anxious for some relief!!

let us know if you find anything out... I've been going through the exact same thing for about 2 months now and it is EXACTLY the same way you describe it all the way down to only noticing it when trying to rest
