The same sound started in my right ear 4 weeks ago, usually about 20 min after I lay down it starts. It is maddening. This morning for the first time it tapped for a few minutes right after waking up. I'll pray for you and then God can heal us both.

DID YOU TRY THE NASONEX??? I had ... and occasionally still get the exact same tapping thing. I think i have chronic post nasal drip so that might have something to do with it. When i finally went to the doctor for the tapping and he recommended Nasonex i almost laughed inside but as you all know this is the MOST annoying thing and a person will try anything ... and amazingly it did work within a few days i was "tap" free!!!! I haven't had to use it since.
Someone recently mentioned that i should try "ear candling" which i had heard of but have not tried. i can guarantee you that if it comes back i will definitely try it and let you all know.

The noise occurs whether you are simply breathing without any chewing or swallowing (if it happens with opening and closing the mouth, you have TMJ). It occurs while reading, sleeping, or watching TV. There's nothing you do that consistently seems to trigger it to happen nor get it to stop. There is no pain and if anything, this issue is more annoying than anything else. If this does not quite sound like you, your problem is more likely to be due to eustachian tube dysfunction.
These irregular clicking noises in the ear should NOT be confused with tinnitus. Rather, irregular clicking noises in the ear are almost always due to muscle spasms... just like "eye twitching" or "facial twitching". BUT, instead of being able to "see" the twitching as with eye twitching (also known as blepharospasm), one hears the twitching instead since the muscles are located around or in the ear. The most common causes are:
Palatal Myoclonus
Tensor tympani muscle spasms
Stapedius muscle spasms

Palatal Myoclonus
The first potential cause (palatal myoclonus) can be diagnosed by seeing "spasms" of the soft palate that occurs in time with the clicking. Spasms of the soft palate can be visualized by simply looking in the mouth or by nasal endoscopy. Watch the videos below (click on picture).

View Looking In The Mouth

View on Nasal Endoscopy

The reason one is able to "hear" the twitching is because the muscles of the soft palate extend up into the ear via the eustachian tube.
Treatment of palatal myoclonus is by botox injections to the muscles that are twitching. Just like botox treatment anywhere else in the body, the effects are only temporary and needs to be repeated every 3-6 months. To find a local doctor who may be able to provide treatment for this particular condition, click here.

Regarding tensor tympani and stapedius muscle spasms... these muscle are not able to be visualized as they are located within the middle ear. The tensor tympani attaches to the malleus ossicle (the "hammer" of the 3 middle ear bones) and the stapedius muscle attaches to the stapes ossicle (the "stirrup").
Just like any muscle in the body, these muscles can also "twitch" rapidly causing the clicking noise in the ear. Tensor tympani muscle spasms typically produce a clicking sound whereas stapedius muscle spasms produce more of a buzz/click sound.
Unfortunately, there is no "test" one can obtain to diagnose this problem with absolute certainty. It is based purely on history and excluding palatal myoclonus as a diagnosis (no soft palate twitching seen even though the patient is able to hear it).
One can try to treat this condition with magnesium oxide 400mg per day and even try muscle relaxants (ie, flexeril). However, ultimately the only way this problem can be treated is surgical... the muscle gets cut. Botox can NOT be utilized as one needs to be able to "see" or "feel" the muscle in order to inject botox. This surgery is performed by a neuro-otologic surgeon.

I don't believe this is a disease.  Doctors have to name anything a disease to get paid.  When I read that a doctor suggested it  could be a sinus problem, I immediately started to use my CieAura Holographic chip behind my ear.  They work like acupuncture without the needles.  Behind the ear is a "sinus" area.  It worked. Some nights I hear very faint sound like bubbles under water.  I also use Benedryl and a couple of asperin.  It is glorious to hear nothing.  I use to be a rep for CieAura and still have friends who order. If you don't try my remedy, get an acupuncturist, a Chinese if possible.  They are the most knowlegable and not as expensive as "fancy" Americans and hoopla.

I had the tapping for 2 months, then I read about the sinus cause and started using an alternative acupuncture for sinus. I had various different sounds when one of my chips fell off and then found another "puncture" area on my forehead. After 10 days of use, I have not heard a sound. What a blessing silence can be. Free for the last three weeks, after removing the hologram chip.
You can get these "chips" (they look like cellophane), from a friend of mine if interested. There is no guarantee, but it worked for me.

Hello Deedles916, I have the exact same problem. It does sound like morse code going on in my left ear. Might be little aliens living in there! =) I found this post while googling to find out out this clicking in my left ear. I've had this for months on and off.. I've no other symptoms except that now and again I get dizzy spells. Like you, the clicking doesn't cause any pain and happens all the time. Its happening right now as I type. NOthing I know triggers it and yes I have been sick alot too with sinus inffections and as I am a teacher and seem to pick up every bug going in the class! I've been for check ups, had an MRI done and everything they said was normal. I guess it is one of those mysterious ailments that we may have to live with. It really is quite annoying I agree. Sorry I can't be more help but I can sympathaize with you. Maybe my ear can send your ear messages!!! =) Good luck on your journey of discovery. If I findout anything new I will let you know. Take care. S.

you are reading books about New Age. I started reading all of these book when my mother died. Near death experiences, any books about heaven, 52 bookis to be exact. What comfort they gave me. Yes, I do believe this is true and many of us do not know about this. I will try asking my spirit guide for help with my clicking in my left ear. Don't think this is nutty people. Read the books in the New Age section of any bookstore. This is about God and Jesus, and so much more. Enjoy.
