These irregular clicking noises in the ear should NOT be confused with tinnitus. Rather, irregular clicking noises in the ear are almost always due to muscle spasms... just like "eye twitching" or "facial twitching". BUT, instead of being able to "see" the twitching as with eye twitching (also known as blepharospasm), one hears the twitching instead since the muscles are located around or in the ear. The most common causes are:

Palatal MyoclonusTensor tympani muscle spasmsStapedius muscle spasms

I have this exact thing. I've had it about a month now and I have called it Morse code just like you did. It's very hard to explain otherwise!! Mine is in my left ear. I spend a lot of my day on the phone or wearing headphones so I've been wondering if that might be related. I don't do medicines or pharmaceuticals of any kind so I won't be trying the Sudafed. I do use essential oils and I tried a little dab of frankincense on my finger and just rubbed it around in my ear. I also plug my ear with my finger for a few seconds and then move the fingertip around as if I'm stretching my ear open farther. That always seems to help for at least a few moments. I've not noticed this when I'm sleeping - usually it's during the day while I'm working - which is why I have assumed my headphone & telephone use is related. My friend told me it might be a form of tinnitus, but she wasn't sure. I will keep researching and if I find anything, I'll keep you posted.

I have this morse code in my ear from time to time,
Somebody on internet suggested to eat up to 5 cows of fresh garlic every day. I did try that and the sound became so quiet; I barely can hear it or don’t hear any thing at all.
Try,,, it really works

I too, have (or HAD) the same problem. The morse code or clicking in the ear, but only when laying down and trying to sleep. After reading these posts and others I found, and realizing it had something to do with sinuses, I remembered I had a nasal spray I should try. It is called Xlear and pronounced "clear". It is different than other nasal sprays in that it has xylitol in it which helps to kill bacteria. It's a nasal spray with a long applicator that you can insert into your nose quite a way. How to use: "look at your toes when spraying your nose". When I use it, I can feel the drainage going down my throat and I can immediately breathe better. The morse code is now gone and has been for months. This is so simple! I would recommend that you at least give it a try!

I've suffered from this for years. Sometimes it's worse than others. Through trial and error, I've found ways to live with it (since I don't have the money to go to the doctor). I've also found what it is (NOT Tinnitis. I've had small cases of that from time to time working on aircraft. Not. the. same... and tinnitis also goes away after a day or so.)

Both causes are muscle spasms. Both treatable, but for a good amount of money.

What I've found that helps me when it's driving me really insane at night is to have a fan going or some other form of white noise such as ocean waves or rainstorm type mpg's. The same works throughout the day, though I tend to favor listening to music, book cassettes, or some other noise on a low to mid level of volume. Through this, I don't notice the noise enough to focus on sleeping, studying, or what have you.

I hope this helps those that find this post! :)

Sorry, just saw that I can't post URL's. Do a search for "Bursts of Fast Irregular Clicking Noise in the Ear" and you'll find the article from the previous post.

Hi I had that noise very recently. It started on evening 2 days ago and as lots of you describing it was les noticable when I have been busy and lauder when I've been resting.

Because it started in a middle of second pint of lager I assumed It's got something to do with the pressure inside inner ears and sinuses (alkohol is increasing blood pressure). As a trained Beauty Therapist I done for myself Hopi Indian Candle treatment and it significantly quiet that noise down:-D

Shortly after that I went to bed and woke up at the morning free of it! :-D lovely feeling, as it was really annoying to hear that noise all evening.

The Ear Candles are balancing a pressure in sinuses and inside the ears, this is why I decided to try it.

Check with your GP if it's ok to have that treatment (membrane musn't be perforated!) and always look for Therapist trained in Hopi Ear Candles treatment.

Good luck!

You have pulsitile tinnitus,(hearing your heartbeat), no one knows the root causeand it could be caused by many things. Generally it isn't harmful but very annoying to say the least. I have had it for several years and just deal with it.

Tinnitus (such as ringing in the ears or hearing loss can be caused by antibiotics so check with the pharmacist to see if the particular one you has this as a possible side effect.

As far as the 'morse code' I have had that too! Just one more thing to deal with....it comes and goes, sometimes gone for months and one day I can sit there and it starts tapping again. Mine generally goes away after several minutes but does return.

The body is an amazing system and just about anything can go haywire. It's remarkable we go so long without issues...
some are not so fortunate having things a lot worse.

I have exactly the same symptoms as deedless and they occurr in the same conditions, less when more active, more when less active. It drives me nuts in bed at night whilst trying to get to sleep.

I have the same symptoms.  I read that this condition is called Myoclonus.  It's kind of like when you have a twitch in your leg or your eye lids but this is happening to the small muscles in your ear.

Well done I like this idea and it seems quite clever and I am off to the chemist to get some ear plugs. Actually mine is like a ticking sound of a clock, I am very confident about your findings of the result of ear plugs though we need to keep them clean to avoid any infections. This is actually a condition known as Palatal Myoclonus or Tensor tympani and/or stapedius muscle spasms (middle ear myoclonus).  It is effectively the same as having a twitch in your eyelid or elsewhere but it is the muscle in your inner ear, which you can hear because it is around or near the ear drum.

Treatments are not pleasant (botox or surgery depending on the muscle).
