Hi! My brother was once diagnosed with traumatic pneumothorax which was caused by his chest injure while camping with his friends. And I suppose your father got injured his chest on that car accident he had and it have possibly caused some small lung collapse. Actually if he’s diagnosed with pneumothorax it means he has got some extra air inside his chest and it causes the sharp pain he probably suffers now as well as breathing problems and pain while coughing. If it turns out that he has small pneumothorax then he will recover on his own but if it is large pneumothorax then he will probably have the Aspiration like my brother had in order to re-expand his chest by using catheter and if this doesn’t help than a chest tube must be placed. This treatment requires hospital stay with antibiotics treatment also. I remember my brother’s doc saying that there’re no long term side effects of this treatment but there’re some little chances for the pneumothorax to reoccur later.
