I too wonder if Mark is on to something in mentioning the back. I have been diagnosed with severe stenosis in much of my spine. Could it cause some kind of pressure on a nerve when one is horizontal over the course of the night?

Hi I have been getting persistent errection through out my sleep,it awakens me from time to time at night, but doesn't die down. I can get rid of it only when I get out of my bed and start walking or after urination. This happened for a year then one day suddenly my penis contracted and became very stiff inside like a stone and I didn't get errection in standing position after this hard flaccid condition.Exercise makes the penis more stiff. I went to uro but that adamant guy denies any stiffness however it is very very stiff.During this stiffness I got less persistent nocturnal errections but after 4 months once again I am getting those errections at night during sleep as before, the stiffness now in flaccid state is less but still it is abnormally stiff and the persistent nocturnal errections still bothers me

I must admit to my own back problems too. I'm a mechanic for 19 years now and have had back problems almost as long. And come to think of it, I haven't been to the chiropractor since probably about the time the SRPE started. Hmm.

I agree with those on here pointing to possible back issues causing this. I've noticed it is worse when I'm lying flat on my back. I think it's possible something about my posture when sitting all day might cause it to get worse. One thing I've also noticed is if I have it bad one night it seems to get worse for a while so I think it's possible there is a component where it kind of exacerbates itself if not treated or interrupted.

Baclofen is the only thing that consistently works for me and also being away from my desk and not sitting all day.

Hi everyone. Keith here. Still suffering.
Has anyone read this study? It says 40 mgs of baclofen is the only effective remedy they know of. Could be related to spinal cord injury, according to them

I also agree on pointing to back issues causing this, my doctor told me my spine shape is not exactly normal (light Scheuermann). I have SRPE for 2 years, I tried chiropractor, physiotherapy, acupuncture, CPAP machine, CT Scan, MRI, visiting several urologists, neurologist .... nothing helped. I used to wake up 3-4 times a night, however recently (since 2 months ago) most of the time I only wake up 1 time around 6 am but I still have pain in my bladder and my back every morning. I take Propecia I think it is helping me to wake up only one time, I am also accepting this as part of my life may be this another reason. My erection goes away with deep breath (no need to get out of bed) the physio told me to take deep breath and try to feel it down around my abdomen, it works for me, the erection goes away with 2-3 deep breath.

To the last poster, when did you start taking Propecia? My problem started when I started taking propecia. You are playing with fire/you sexuality taking that drug. Please explain the correlation between propecia and your condition. As I said, mine started AFTER taking propecia after a hugely painful episode of what I thought was prostatitis.

John here with another me to related to the back. No pain yet but I have a pretty bad case of scoliosis with my back curving toward the bottom. I wonder if back issues could be a thread to explore.

Persistent low back pain (i now have inversion table that help the lb but not the nightime issue)
Normal quality of sex with my wife

I think collating others "specs" to look for correlations very useful

48 yrs old
Very fit (surf/skate/snowboard, run, lift, yoga) pretty much daily
Psoriatic arthritis and IBS for over a decade
High stress job, and am what my mom would call "a worrier" to boot
Used to mtn bike...stopped when it bothered my prostate
antidepressants for maybe 2 years in my 20s
Have sustained many low back and coccyx injuries..(was concerned for years about caudus equinus nerve-bundle involvement, but was told symptoms would be opposite, as in no erections...have two herniated discs in L region, not sure which now, but that situation is managed quite well now
nyquil every night
Up between 2-3 am w rock hard erection, only alleviated by urination and or passing gas...the gas seems to be obstructed by and therefore to contribute to the high-pressure erection
Usually able to get back to sleep but sometimes not, and am someone who NEEDS 6-7 hours, no more no less, so quality of life sucks
DEFINITELY related to REM sleep
Always difficulty/hesitancy w urination but has steadily worsened ...onset predates this condition
Klonopin didn't help (took it p.r.n. for anxiety before a hearing or trial).
Urologist basically says structurally I'm fine...implies it's a head thing

My specs
58 years old
healthy and fit, biker in summer, swim in winter.
Dealing with this issue for at least 10 years, possibly longer.
Teacher with most summers off, so stress during school year, unstressed during summer, condition is all year.
Up between 1 and 6 times a night, issue increases from 4:00 am on. Have to stand up for a few minutes or try to urinate to make erection away.
Have never taken meds for it, as usually I am able to fall back asleep - guess I have learned to live with it. Although it is tough not being able to sleep in past 7:00 am
Diagnosed with stenosis of the spine both in lower back and neck - wonder about connection with pressure on some nerve.
Feel the need to urinate or a pressure that feel similar to needing to urinate when issue "arises."
Bed wetter as child and have always needed to pee many times in night since my 30's but no evidence of prostate enlargement, although prostate cancer runs in family. I see a urologist yearly for prostate check up. I was prescribed oxybutynin to stop the need to urinate and it had no effect on my peeing or erections.
No connection to sexual activity.

Neff,
Has anyone tried sleeping on their side and cupping your sack with your hand. Ex. Sleeping on left side curling up your legs So your knees are hip level and cupping up your sack up with your right hand. It seems to work to keep me asleep.
