Whatever you do, do NOT take Trazadone as a sleep aid or antidepressant because it will make your problem way worse. You may find cimetidine (over the counter antacid) helpful but be mindful of side effects from higher levels of prolactin.

Alright folks.....I think I have a solution to all this (it has worked for me). After experiencing sleep deprivation for a few years from this issue, reading books, visiting a neurologist, etc. what appears to be the root cause of the issue (for me...) is that my body was stuck in fight of flight mode (high gear). With all the stress, notifications, digital world in which we live, work and kids, the issue is that becomes the norm for the body. Check your hands. Are they typically cold? That indicates a high stress level (mine were). I still battle this issue, but it has improved drastically. I read "A Headache in the Pelvis" book, and along with my neurologist, began performing the paradoxical relaxation techniques (breathing exercises) as specified in this book. In addition, the breathing exercises actually help bring the erection down at night without ever getting out of bed too. I began the breathing exercises about an hour before bed and you would not believe the difference and how the body relaxes by doing the paradoxical relaxation technique. Importantly, the book shines light on the fact that there's more than likely nothing wrong with you......and reading forums, etc. can drive you nuts because you begin to think there is something wrong. That leads to further anxiety levels, and makes the condition worse. You have to learn to relax, and I do this by doing breathing exercises. Folks with high stress levels typically have this issue from everything that I have gathered. When I wake up with the issue, my body is in fight or flight even if it's not when I go to bed. REM sleep seems to put me into it involuntary while I'm asleep. Breathing exercises after waking up helps to calm it down a bit to be able go back to sleep. I hope this helps anyone that is dealing with this issue. Best of luck.

Hi Eugene,

I have been having this problem for many years but recently its started getting to the 4 or 5 times a night and it's painful.
It started happening once a night every few days or week apart, it's now gotten to the, every night and I dread going to sleep.
I was wondering if any of you guys have managed to get any results?.
I'm a 55 year old male, I've a bad back and diabetic and I'm on blood thinners.
I've been reading the string and so far it looks as if it's baclofen that is hit and miss on people.
I have just started 10mg of Tamazepan at night, 1 hour before bed, it has taken these horrible inflections down ro 1 or 2 a night but its really playing with my head.
My doctor is a god send and has never heard of this before, he asked the other doctors in his practise and none of them either.
He will refer me to a urologist if this doesn't work however I found this site and reading thru, they haven't helped many of the people on here.
So I don't want to go thru all this and just told to take baclofen, when my doctor could and would do this.

Many thanks for your help

Algi

Hey Eugene

Are you still able to get replies?
It has been a few years and I'm looking for information on your outcome?

CURED! I am replying to my own post about paradoxical relaxation. My body was stuck in fight or flight mode due to the triggering of my fight or flight response. These led to the multiple erections at night that greatly disturbed my sleeping quality. However, after 2.5 years of a journey and continuous visits to my neurologist, we finally solved the ROOT CAUSE! My body was stuck in fight or flight because I have OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA)! I am betting this is the case for most folks on here. I see when you go to the home page of this topic, it shows a doctor has answered the question with diagnoses shown, but OSA is not even listed. I’m not a doctor (just an engineer), but I am married to one who has helped me walk through this. With obstructive sleep apnea, my oxygen levels (as measured by my Garmin watch) were dropping to as low as the mid to upper 70’s at night (normal is 95-100%). Typical average lows were in the low 80’s. My neurologist finally ordered a sleep study, and I actually got to do it at home with a company called Snap Diagnostics. Their device allowed for 3 nights of data that measured my breathing, pulse ox, and snoring. The results were that I was having an apnea event on average of just over 100 per night (every 4-5 minutes). Every time that happened, it triggered my body’s fight or flight response. I am now about 5 weeks into using an APAP (CPAP, but set to an automatic pressure) and I do not have the erection issue any longer. My airway was collapsing in my throat area, and the APAP opens it up so I can breath. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET A SLEEP STUDY TO CHECK FOR OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA! I am so thankful I kept going back to my neurologist and we finally got to the bottom of it. I am betting most of you have OSA too, as 33 million Americans do and it’s grossly under diagnosed. Do the deep breathing exercises to calm your nervous system down, but get a sleep study to find the root cause. I am posting this to help others since I finally figured out the solution!
