I am 22, I had my tonsils out on Monday June 23rd, by Wednesday the 25th I was eating Minestrone soup and Kraft Dinner, I can pretty much eat anything now. My voice is still pretty strange and the thing that hangs down is really swollen, but other than that I am fine. I was amazed at how easy the surgery was, much better than all the episodes of Tonsillitis I was having.

Hello all, I was doing some searching for Tonsillectomy forums for a little discussion and came across this one. I feel very fortunate after reading all your posts.

I am 22 years of age, just had the tonsils out Monday morning June 23rd. Spent 4 hours in the hospital afterwards, took no pain medication whatsoever. Today is the 27th, I can pretty much eat anything I want, but still sticking to soft stuff to make sure the throat heals up nicely. I havent had to take any painkillers or anything yet, I have Tylenol 3 but haven't touched them. I was able to eat Minestrone Soup and Mac and Cheese on Wednesday just 2 days after surgery. I feel really good. It hurts much less than any episode of Tonsillitis I have ever had. I am suprised at how easy it has been so far. I have barely even felt any pain whatsoever other than minor from swallowing. I hope you all recover swiftly like I seem to have so far.

i am 42 female and had tonsillectomy 3rd july 08. i still have a soar throat and trouble with swallowing, particularly liquids. The pain has subsided but the discomfort is terrible. I feel like i have a lump in my throat, particularly when i try to drink. I can only sip drinks, although i can eat rough foods quite easily! Soft foods seem to get stuck. my throat is sore, especially first thing in the morning or if i talk much. Difficulty i have is that i am due back at work 3 days time in an inbound call centre! Hello, So it has been week since my surgery. Lets just say that I would rather have been hit in the head with beer bottle then this. Most annoying pain ever. The surgery was great, and so were the next few days but after that it was terrible terrible.

I can 't eat anything.I hate ice cream and cold water. The medication makes me really tired and feel sick. I am taking Motrin and that gets rid of the pain for a few hours (2-3h) and I must take it again. I also took antibiotics. The right side of my mouth hurts more then the left. My ear hurts just as much. I can't sleep longer then 3hours. It is really important to keep drinking lots of water.

Hi, I am a 33 year old female and had my tonsils removed on October 9th.
I am now on day 14, and I still have pain. (I live in New York)
I was prescribed liquid tylenol with codeine but turns out I am allergic to it, my doctor switched me to liquid vicodin, and am allergic to that too, so I have had to endure the pain without any pain meds. I was given prednisolone which I couldn't stand the way it made me feel (it's awful), as well as a liquid antibiotic which was fine. This whole experience has been a roller coaster ride. I have had days where I felt fine, and days like I feel now where the back of my throat burns into my ears. My tongue turned white and fuzzy and burned like crazy, thankfully that is over with. It still feels swollen and I can't stick it out far, yawning hurts, so does sneezing.
I lost 8 pounds because eating has been rough. Things seem to get stuck in my throat. I tried to eat ice cream and OMG!!! It burned, burned, burned, so did sherbert and applesauce. I have been living on liquid meals (Ensure, Slim Fast etc). I have also been drinking ice water and gatorade. Some flavors burn, but I found a few that don't. I find warm tea to be soothing. I did have a few days where I was able to eat normally with minimal pain, except the food kept getting stuck. I had to drink lots of water with each bite. The first week I had to sleep sitting up because whenever I laid down, my swollen uvula would block my airway. It's still swollen, but not as bad, so sleeping is a bit easier. Also, for some reason, I had trouble just falling asleep the first week after surgery, I just didn't feel tired, which is odd... My son had this same surgery last year when he was 5 and bounced right back. Me on the other hand, I keep wondering when the pain will go away. Right now I have a plain old sore throat, and when I swallow I have a bruise type feeling and it feels like I am swallowing a lump. I am not complaining, but it's certainly annoying. My voice changes day to day as well, but for the most part it has a nasaly tone to it now.
I read somewhere online that it can take a few months for your voice to go back to normal and the swelling to completely go down...just as long as this pain goes away soon...that other stuff I can deal with.
Good luck to everyone else out there going through this!

hi, i had my tonsils/adenoids removed last wednesday (October 29th) and i am on day 6 of my surgery. the pain in my trachea from the breathing tube being stuck down my throat gives me considerably more pain than the area that was actually operated on. if i swallow wrong, a jabbing, dull pain shoots up my throat into my right ear. it is unbearable, but i think it is getting better. i called my doctor today and he said that a lot of times, people complain more about the irritation in the trachea from the breathing tube than anything else, and i agree! feels like i was punched in the throat as hard as possible. i have also been coughing up large phlegm wads along with chunks of the white stuff in the back of my throat. i only started bleeding once, and that was the day after the surgery. i remedied it with some cold water, and it quickly stopped. i hope today was my worst day and that it gets better from here. i keep being too greedy and trying to eat semi-normal foods, but i know i shouldn't be (that and it's kind of painful). i can eat biscuits, macaroni and cheese, pasta (by itself), ramen noodles, bread, eggs, grits, and oatmeal so far. i tried to eat some fried chicken, but it hurt my irritated trachea (not my operated area) too much and i had to run for pain meds. hope this helps someone. other than the inflamed trachea, the docs did a really good job on the surgery overall. very minimal pain/swelling/bleeding in the surgery area.

I had my tonsils taken out on the 18th of Dec this year. But on the left side they also took muscle out b.c it was scared from them lansing it and sore throats. Then today is my 11th day. I had my apt with my doctor after my surgery it went well he said i healed well but i still have pain from eating some foods and fluids. The thing im wondering is that my jaw is kinda locked like it wont open all the way. Is that cause of the swelling..I just want it to go away its so annoying. I havnt taken the pain meds since like 4 days ago. So does anyone know how long it takes for the swelling to go down?

Im on day 9 of my post tonsillectomy and right now Im telling everyone that it isn't worth it. The day of the surgery I threw up 11 times, scent ect. would make my stomach throw up. The pain is unbearable, Ive lost 10+ lbs. You cant eat anything,f or the first 5 days I tried eating different foods but would only have a couple bites. I tried, oatmeal, jello, pudding, applesauce, ice cream, ramen noodles, macaroni. Tonight I got macaroni down but the scabs are half attacted to my throat that everytime I swallow they flip around and its uncomfortable. Im on Percocet and I try not to take it very much anymore but if i dont take if before bed I wake up in the middle of the night unable to swalllow. My husband keeps saying he wants his wife back, beacuse all i do is sleep the pain away.My tonsils now are white, im just waiting for them to finally be red again so I can go eat and go back to work. At this point I wish I hadn't got the sugery. Good luck to anyone who does it, make sure to take off a good 2+ weeks of work, my company thought I would return 4 days after...haha.

Seriously I am 33 years old, and had my tonsils out 6 days ago.
I was eating dorritos the first day after surgery! Then I got worse.
It isnt my tonsil area that is hurting though! It is the back of my tounge it is swollen, and sore. I cant eat anything, and cant drink anything by day6.

The pain meds work only for a hour and a half :$
Then I try and eat a pop cycle, and cold water. Rah!

I am in complete and total hell!
The right side of my throat started bleeding after my surgery, so I had to go back, and get cauterized on the right side of my throat. That is the side of my tounge that is killing me. Food gets caught behind my tounge, and I have to hack it up.

I wish some one would just shoot me now.

Hello all,

I am 21 years old and had a tonsillectomy on March 17. I had a real hard time with it. The only thing I could put down for the first 11 days was water and jello. Everything else hurt to bad, even ice cream.

Now it is April 14, almost a month later. I have no pain anymore, but my tongue is still so swollen that I can not see the back of my mouth and I'm struggling with nasal regurgitation. If the swelling and nasal regurgitation dont get better the next week or two I think im going to have to go back and have them take another look. I have a feeling my tongue swelling is causing the regurgitation but why on earth is my tongue still swollen a month later???

Hi all...I'm 41 and had my tonsils out on 4/17.

I guess I've been lucky because I was back to work 10 days after. Not saying I was totally healed but I only had a minor sore throat and was eating regular food.

Today (about a month later) only have a bit of scratchiness and an intermittent problem of not being able to comfortably breath out through my nose. (I'm hoping the nose thing goes away soon).

I'm actually very happy i had the operation.

Some tips that worked for me:

-- Constant small sips of fluids (every 15 - 20 minutes) to keep your mouth wet.

-- I had a night time care package: cooler with Gatorade/Juice/water and some jello. When I woke up I would take a few sips of drink and eat the jello slowly. This would rehydrate my throat with in a few minutes. Then I would get u0p and get moving.

-- For those with pain in their ears after a week or so...Are you still drinking/eating really cold or frozen items? Stop. Try room temperature or luke warm drinks and soft foods. I had major pain a week later but found it was only after I ate or drank something really cold or frozen. I was fine when I stopped!

The only other thing I might note is to be careful with the pain killers. I took mine as directed but one night I collapsed in my Kitchen in the middle of the night while going for water. So while my tonsils are fine...I have a broken hand.

Hi

I am a 31 year old female who is on post-op day 8.

Pain isnt too bad now, I have stopped taking the Co-codamol & replaced with normal 500mg paracetamol caplets & still taking the Ibrupfofen. Still cannot eat much except watery mashed potato & custard (room temperature). Ovaltine is also good, have it lukewarm though.

However, I have had a traumatic experience which I wanted to share with you because I think its important:

On the morning of the 3rd day post-op, I woke up with a foul taste in my mouth. I just assumed this was normal, but found saltwater rinses helped get rid of the taste. My pain then started to get worse............so bad that I was taking far too may painkillers in an effort to stop the pain (PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS), it was absolute agony to take the painkillers, and when I did take them, they only lasted for approx 2 hours, although I could still fell a dull pain all the time.

The foul taste was even worse on the morning of day 4 - I began to think that I had an infection. I had a bad gum infection some years ago when I had my wisdom teeth removed, and I remembered having that same foul taste then. Pain was unbelievable. Did not sleep for the next two nights because of the pain, still taking wayyy too many painkillers. Didnt eat. Was crying with the pain & out of my mind. I have never felt pain like this in my life, and I never wish to do so again.

Day 5 - I found an out of hours GP surgery (thank you God) as day 5 was a Sunday. They werent going to see me as it was an appointment only basis, until I broke down, sobbing, could hardly speak with the pain. The pain was on my tongue, down my throat, on the roof of my mouth & surgery area. The GP gently prised open my mouth about a centimetre & I quote "Oh my god, its massively infected". I cried again, out of relief that I finally knew that this pain wasnt normal & that something could be done about it. So I was prescribed double doses of penicillin which was dispersible (even better).

Please, please, if you are in any doubt about pain/infection, please go & see your doctor as soon as possible. I am so glad I had the good sense on day 5 to go & see that doctor, having remembered that particular symptom of a previous mouth infection. I had assumed up until then that it was normal post-op pain, and dread to think what would have happened if I'd left it any later, still carrying on assuming that the intense pain was normal. Tonsillectomy is a painful procedure, but it shouldnt have been so painful that my super-strength medication could not take the pain away.

So if in doubt - get it checked out!!!

This is day 10 of tonsillectomy and adnoids as well. I am 32 and cannot take this. I still have to take something for the pain every 3 hours. This is worth than labor pains and a c-section. Wondering when I will be able to speak and get off meds. THis is brutal. I sip water all of the time. Doc said its healing slowly. Anyone who gets through this operation can handle any operation!

Hi guys! you all have my sympathy! I am 22 and had the operation 2 days ago, I have awful pain and know exactly when it is time to take my pain killers co-codamol and voltorol. I was wondering if anyone has experienced a white covering on the back of their throat and the wee bit that hangs down at the back of your mouth (sorry I don't know what it is called). Hope you all get better soon! :-)
