Hi everyone I'm 14 years old and I had my tonsils (and adenoids) removed 8 days ago. This is a little timeline of my experience. Tip: take the pain medicine your doctor gives you as much as possible it really helps.
Day 1: I was feeling perfectly fine with just a small ordinary sore throat.
Day 2: felt the same as day one with maybe a little more pain. I was feeling well enough to go get my ears double pierced
Day 3: I felt bad. It wasn't terrible but it was probably just like a sore throat times 2. When I swallowed food it felt really sharp and painful down my throat.
Day 4&5: These days were the absolute worst. I woke up crying at 7 in the morning and took some medicine. It was very very painful and I used an ice pack on my neck which helped. Kinda. Also on one of these days I spit up blood but it wasn't that much.
I can say that on day 7/8 it does get better but I'm am so sick of feeling like this and I have been craving so many foods that would kill to go down my throat.;(((

My parents did the same thing to me when I was about 10.. They got too freaked out by the surgery and opted out.
I wish they had just done it the, as my condition just got worse and worse over the years, and now at 22 years old I've finally just gotten them out. Recovery gets worse the older you get, definitely recommend getting it done as early as possible, if you really need it!!

Omg this happened to me yesterday. I made it to like day 8 or 9. I had been eating SOME regular foods that were mild in flavor with very little problem and was excited it was almost over because I've been CRAVING mac and cheese..
I woke up one morning and was swallowing blood in my sleep. It took me a couple of seconds to realize what was happening so I shot up to go ice the vessels like they tell you to. I couldn't even get ice water in my mouth because my mouth would just fill up with blood. I couldn't breathe. I was disoriented and panicking. Everyone in my house was asleep. I spit blood into the sink and held my mouth open to see how quickly it came out. It was pouring out like a faucet. I was terrified so I started chugging ice water along with the blood in my mouth because I figured at least if the ice water was hitting it it would stop. I only made it worse because I started projectile commuting blood and water all over the kitchen sink. I filled it up about halfway before it drained.
I flew upstairs and woke my mother up and said we had to go to the hospital. While I was throwing on pants, I puked more blood all over the bathroom counter and sink about three or four times. On the way out I puked all over he front walk. It's safe to say my house also looked like a triple homicide.
We got in the car and I had a basin my grandmother had given me which I puked violently into three or four times on the way there. It's now stained my mothers interior I feel so bad she was crying on the way there because it looked so terrible.
I walked into the lobby with my basin of blood looking a full fledged psychopath. I clotted the minute I got there but still had to go back into OR to get cauterized again because my clot popped off as soon as he checked it. I now have to start all over again. I am sad. I want mac and cheese.
He told me he's also never seen anything like that and that he's so sorry I fell into that 1%/2% complication range. I'm not permitted solids until day 10-14 so I'm pretty sad but it's not super painful. It never really was. More annoying than anything.
Sorry that happened to you.

Hey fellow friends
I'be got my tonsils removed this past March 8th. They said I woke up crying for my mom due to the anesthetics lol. I had very minimal pain but they still gave me meds. I was prescribed liquid oxycodone. When I went home the meds started wearing off, I could take 5-10mg of oxycodone and I didn't want to feel the pain at all so I took the 10mg lol I'm not the type of person to usually take medicine because I don't like it but I'll take it if I can't take the pain.
Anyway I lay down for the night and I kept coughing up phlegm , it hurted to bad to actually try to spit it out so j had no choice but to swallow it I kept up with my medicine taking it every 4 hours as prescribed. I tried to eat soup but I didn't have an appetite ..and I slept fine for the night .
Day 2 the pain was a little worse I got my surgery done at Johns Hopkins hospital so their outpatient center asked me how I was feeling I told her about the phlegm she told me to stay away from dairy products so I took my meds as usual I felt worse so I was laying down most of the day . I tried to eat soup but I didn't have an appetite so I threw it out, I tried apple sauce but it made feel like I was going to vomit . I slept thru the night again only waking up to take my meds
Day3- idk who I thought I was lol I had to get out the house I was in the house for too long so I took my meds and my bestfriend came and got me I got motion sick I didn't tell her because she was going to bring me back home lol. So we went to get our nails done and we went to the mall I bought an auntie Anne's pretzel with no salt on it I chewed it up and it was sore as I swallowed but it filled me up and I was STARVING! So later that night we went to Cheesecake Factory EPIC FAIL at first we only went because I could eat the cheesecake but I. Saw crab cakes and I wanted it so I had 2 crab cakes out of 5 and like 10 fries and I had a smoothie my throat was on fire . We got back to the car and I took both of my medicines the Tylenol and oxy bruh lol I could've cried from how much pain I was in. I went to bed in pain
Day 4 which is today I felt fine , I took my meds , I slept my day away today to be honest . I gave my sister my food but I did eat one more crab she it didn't hurt as bad because I had just took my meds . I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone ! When your doctor says Stick to a bland diet , just listen I've lost 7 pounds already from not eating . I'm still starving lol but I refuse to eat anything else like that . Ice water soothes my throat as well as ice by itself . Maybe I'll have more to post as I start healing more .

First off, I am 16 and a female. Previously I have had 2 wisdom teeth surgeries and knee surgery (ACL/meniscus repair) all in one year. I am 6 days into my recovery from tonsillectomy. When I woke up from surgery, I was in extreme pain. The nurse gave me pain meds through my IV and it took a while to completely work. I couldn't talk. Usually anesthesia makes me very nauseous (I had knee surgery a year before), but I woke up with no nausea. Although, r before I left the surgery center, I started to feel like I was going to throw up. The nurse gave me medicine that dissolves in the mouth. It helped so quickly! I only felt nauseous one more time since my surgery. The next couple days, I slept a lot and was always drowsy. Most likely due to taking liquid Vicodin. The meds helped very fast and did the job. I was only in pain if I didn't take my meds every 4 hours or when I would swallow. The hardest part about this surgery is swallowing. It caused me the most pain, even swallowing saliva. I'm on day 6 and it is still hard to swallow. Sleeping at nights, is super tough. My mouth would fill up with saliva and choke me if I didn't spit it out, or swallow. It still is a battle at night. Also, the first couple nights, I coughed ALOT. No blood came out. I have had no freak accidents or mishaps so far, but the main concern has been swallowing which hurts SO bad. The worst is when you are hungry, but don't want to eat because you will be in a lot of pain even 20 minutes after you eat (even on meds). Drinking is also a problem. You need fluids, but it hurts so much to get them down. I also didn't have an appetite for the first 4 days. I barely ate anything; my parents said my face was looking thinner and I was skin and bones. Do your best to stay on routine with meds, drink plenty of fluids, eat the best you can, and don't try to talk that much. Day 6 and its still hard to talk. Talking gives you more pain, and you have to swallow to talk, which is painful. Sleep as much as you can the first couple days, because it helps with the pain. good luck!

I was 18 yrs old when I had my tonsils out n it took me 45 days to heal n recover though I had very large tonsils n was sick at time of surgery. Was on liquid diet 30 days n very soft diet the last 15 days. My darling angel bear is 7 yrs old and 8 days post op of tonsils n adenoids, let me tell you its miserable for him. Popsicles, liquids cold, ice cream etc nothing is helping. The hydrocodone is every 4 hrs only last 2 hrs. Hes lost weight. I try everything from popsicles to slushies to mashed potatoes n gravy lukewarm to ice water to ice cream to frozen yogurt, creamy soup broths to pedialyte to pediasure to pudding to ice packs to cotton balls in the ears you name it even teaspoon of honey a few times a day. Best I can advise is rest, sip as much fluids as you can, take pain meds round the clock, avoid sodas, I guess ginger ale for some help but the carbonation makes it worse for my son, yogurt is good especially greek yogurt w honey, alot of prayer, stay home n rest dont be running around, use humidifier round the clock, elevate, stay w the softest liquid type foods because you do not want to irritate those scabs they need to come off naturally otherwise w my friend he lost his voice for 3 mths, dont talk, use signals, rest the voice to help w the healing process. Its been 22 yrs since my surgery n no more throat infections only pharyngitis a couple times like 3, but take care n dont blow your nose for 2 wks if you had adenoids removed. Prayers for all and God bless.

Great review of your account. I'm 37 as well and this has been rough! It's midnight and the start of day 4. Can I please just speed this up! I'm icing my nect now and drink tons of iced water and Gatorade. My medication was too strong and impaired my breathing so I went to ER last night. The panic that set in plus the swollen throat didn't help either. I now have Teylenol with Codiene but am scared to take it for fear of it effecting my breathing again. I got a shot of Ativan at the ER which calmed me and was back home in 3 hours. I'm really hating the feeling of something dangling in my throat. I haven't looked and am not going to. Since drinking a lot, it feels like the scabs are softening. I'm on keflex antibiotics for 7 days and hope my pain is gone by then! Wish me luck and best wishes to all of you out there suffering too! This procedure is awful. I did better with a c section.

I am 17 post surgery had my tonsils removed as well as part of my family and some reconstructive surgery for sleep apnea so my surgery was a little more expensive. The problem that I am experiencing now is my right side still has massive swelling which has not came down so therefore I have liquid build up behind my right ear drum now. As the eustachian tube cannot drain I still have a lot of pain in my throat and now my ear is horrible from the liquid build up behind the eardrum this has just been my experience and I'm hoping that no one else has a similar problem good luck

I'm on day 10. This process sucked a lot. But it's really worth it in the end. I still have minimal pain when I swallow but I ate an eggroll today and that was awesome. Hopefully I can have a good Christmas dinner tomorrow.
All I can say is... take your meds.
Don't mess with your throat.
Drink lots of water
Try to eat
Tons of sleep

Hi everyone, My name is Hailey, i'm 18 years old and i'm currently on Day 3 after my surgery.
Day 1- Pain wasn't horrible, just a sore throat, mainly tired so i slept off all the anesthesia and stuff most of the day.
Day 2- Pain started to increase. I was given Hydrocodon and it says to take it every 4-6 hours but some how mine wares off in about an hour and a half, & the pain begins to be unbearable so i started taking Ibuprofen (the gel pills) in between my medicine times in order to ease the pain a little. I feel the ibuprofen works almost as well as the hydrocodon except that makes me sleepy. Well, Day 2 i threw up twice, probably from taking medicine on an empty stomach. i have a sensitive stomach, i always have. so eating soup and applesauce every day kinda upsets my stomach.
Day 3- I woke up in the worst pain in the middle of the night, probably due to throwing up the day before, i've been taking my medicine all day & i've been sleeping a lot to escape the pain while i can.
Long story short, i'm an eater.. and i miss real food so much, i cannot WAIT to heal so i can enjoy a nice big meal, and a comfortable sleep. Good luck to everyone going through this as well, it is definitely more painful then it sounds!!

The younger she is the easier the surgery. I was supposed to get them out when I was younger and didn't. Getting them out as an adult is much harder.
