I was so glad to find this! Now I know I'm not the only one with this problem. I have had this on and off for the past 2 years. At first I just got it every 3 or 4 month. But now I've been getting it more often. My lips swell up, turn really read, feel extremely chapped or sunburned, and kind of itchy around the edges. And then they peel. It usually takes at least a week for my lips to go back to normal. I have tried everything you can think of but nothing helps. Then I found this post. I saw where some one had mention something about a yeast infection. Then I thought...well the symptoms are similar. So I went to walmart and bought a cheap yeast infection kit (one for vaginal yeast infection) and I used the tube of cream that comes with it on my lips. And it worked! My lips were almost back to normal in less than 2 days! Hope this can help someone!

I have the same problem for almost 2 years. My lips started feeling funny on the upper part.,I felt a scaly part and then it spreaded all over with little tiny bumps. I used everything vinegar, oxygen peroizide, Vaseline, aquaphor, the dermatologist prescribed desodine. Nothing works, it comes and goes. My lips are not black, itchy and swollen. This thing is taking over my life. I need help before I lose my mind. I am only 36 years old. Help please

I'm 18, and I've had this recurring lip problem cycle since I was 11 years old. That's right, 7 years. I've been to more doctors and dermatologists and been prescribed more oral medications and ointments than I can keep track of. I've noticed that everything I've tried always works during that cycle. Then I try it the next time a cycle of it appears, and it doesn't work. So I get something new, and it works. It might sound crazy, but I'm convinced that whatever this is becomes resistant to medications after certain periods of time. I've also noticed that I usually get this from sun exposure (no beach or outdoor pools for me), and that's when I get it the worst, but I've gotten it from others things as well (foods, spices, makeup, etc.). I'm not looking for any answers for treating it on this forum because, honestly, I'm convinced there are none that will work every time. But it's nice to finally find others that understand this.

This happens to me as well. In April I got a cold sore, which i get often. We didnt have any medicine for the cold sore at the time, so I decided to put Chapstick on it to keep it hydrated. The Chapstick did the opposite, and in the next week the cold sore doubled in size and opened up in other sores around my lips. My entire lips were covered in oozing brown sores that were hot and crusty. On my chin it started to get red and bumpy. It hurt to even open my mouth slightly and I barely ate. I went to the doctor and I discovered that I had a bacterial infection. The doctor said that when I rubbed the chapstick over my open cold sore, I was spreading the virus all over my lips, which led to the infection. I was prescribed muniprocin and within two days the infection was gone. The medicine dried out my lips so bad that it took weeks for my lips to heal, but when my lips were back to normal i was overjoyed. Now every time I get a cold sore I smear abreva over it constantly and it works, though once I did contract the infection again. I hope this helps; dont underestimate the virus, because it will keep spreading if not properly treated.

The same things happened to me. One doctor took a culture of my nose and said that I had the bacteria called serratia. She seemed puzzled. anyway, Ciproflaxin was the only penicillen to clear it up. Once it was gone it came back within 10-14 days. the only way I can keep the crust from coming back and keep my lips from itching and breaking out is to put bleach in my toilet tank. Don't ask me how I came to this conclusion, but anytime I start to get the symptoms, I put the bleach in the toilet tank and within 24 hours, the symptoms have subsided. I initially thought that it was environmental, so when I moved out of my house and into another one, I assumed I'd never have the problem again. I was wrong :-( It took some months, but the within 4 months of being in my new place, the symptoms came back. I assume that my body is producing some bacteria internally that I'm allergic to externally.

I am having the same problem and had it about ten years ago my dermatologist said I'm allergic to nickel and drinking milk helps. You will also need a special ointment prescribed.

My 8 year old son has the same condition in his lips. Up to now I assumed that it was the sun what was causing the irritation and chapped lips and then once the lips crack, the infection begins. This has been going on for several years now, with some breaks in between. The latest episodes has had us applying mupirocin for weeks at a time to keep the infection from advancing. It always starts with red lips, then chapped, then infected. We have been using Aquaphor to try to stop the lips from cracking, but my son because of his age, forgets and exactly 2 days later his lips get red and the whole thing begins. It's driving us crazy! Please let us know if the new antibiotic finally got rid of your infection.

Try putting bleach in your toilet tanks every few weeks. The bacteria may be getting used to the antibiotics, so other means may be necessary. I've been using bleach for months and have successfully avoided having to use antibiotics.

I'm having the same issue, I started juicing three weeks ago and thought maybe I'm allergic to something. My lips are now black so I'm going to try the vinegar three times a day and see if I can get rid if this c**p.

Sounds like an oral fungal infection aka oral yeast infection aka candida albicans. Its very common. Also look up angular chilitis. This causes cracking at the corners of the mouth. This infection can also spread to the skin surrounding the mouth as well. Look it up and then let me know what u think?

Look up chilitis and angular chilitis. They cause inflamation of the lips and make them appear swollen, dry and chapped even whitish looking with fissure like lines or wrinkles on them. Angular chilitits causes the cracking and the corners of the mouth. These are causes by constant lip licking, biting. Also can be an oral fungal infection aka oral yeast infection. Too much yeast can also effect the lips and surrounding skin around the mouth. The most frustrating thing is to get doctors to stop and actually listen. Fungal infections are very hard to diagnose. Good luck.

I think there may be something to the sandwich thing. My problem first started when I ate a toasted sub at subway. It was really filled to the max and when I would take a bite the crusty part of the bread would scrap the corners of my mouth and lips. The next day they became very chapped. A couple days later I had the little white bumps that felt wet. I went to the doctor and got antibiotics. It went away after a few days. But came back again 2 weeks later. I ate a chicken club sandwich at mcdonalds and woke up the next morning with the bumps again!!! I have no clue what this is or how to treat it. Drs are a joke. Don't take it serious. So tired of this.......

I had a similar problem. My lips would start to feel tight. Then the edges of my lips would get really dry and red and the corners of my mouth would get so dry it hurt to open my mouth. Then tiny tiny bumps would form around the edges of my lips. .My lips themselves would feel strange and weep as would the bumps around the edges. They would be like this for a few days. My lips would then peel and heal.but the cycle would soon start all over again. It got to the point where it was occurring several times a month and each time seemed worse. I dealt with it for a year. I found this forum and read the ideas people had as to what the problem was. I decided to treat it as yeast and I am so glad I did! I finally am rid of it! (Knock on wood). I applied apple cider vinegar, which burned like crazy but also felt kind of good because it dried the weeping. At night I used an anti fungal cream. At first I used one for athletes foot. the occurrences became less frequent and severe but still happened. I would do the apple cider vinegar and fungal cream regimen again and it cleared it up quickly but would return. Then I found a cream in my medicine cabinet that had previously been prescribed to me by my Dr for external vaginal yeast. It contains nystatin and triamcinolone. It worked better for me. I haven't had the problem in over a month now. I use the cream on my lips a couple of nights a week just to be safe. Hope this helps someone else.
