It will be exactly one year next month, since I was diagnosed and then misdiagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy. For two months I walked around knowing that there was something VERY wrong with me. Trying to accept the ER Doc.'s word that I was NOT pregnant, could have NEVER been pregnant and to go get rest. Baffled and confused, still experiencing strange symptoms for almost 2 more months, I tried to chalk it up to maybe it was a virus that I was hanging on too?? My family, fiance' and friends had accepted this diagnosis, now, and seemed to view me as "crazy" when I would mention it. Two weekends before Christmas, I awoke to excrusiating pain in my abdomen. I could not lay my back down on the bed and could not keep my voice from screaming intensely. My fiance' called the Ambulance and still no one knew. They rushed me to the ER and within minutes, informed me I was pregnant! Surprise!! While the team gathered in preperation, I received other tests. My fiance' and family were informed that the surgery was potentially fatal and I had lost a tremendous amount of blood. At this time, they were aware that my right fallopian tube ruptured. The surgery went well. My ovary and tube were both removed and no blood transfusion. But even then, NO ONE prepared me for what would come, NEXT. I have an onset of chronic Migraines, Fibromyalgia, consistent Urinary Tract Infections, Stage I Hypertension and a very difficult time building my immune system and getting well. Has anyone else experience similar results?? Any suggestions?? Almost 1 year, and most days I am in too much pain, one way or another to properly function as I did before?? Am I a special case or has anyone else had similiar circumstances?? If so, how long did it take? And do you have any additional advice for me?

It is interesting that I came across your story as the most recent and updated story on this thread. I just got home from a pre-op appoint with my ob-gyn, where I was informed of my pending surgery that is to occur in two weeks. My story is long but, I think it will help you and maybe me.
In May of 2005, my husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for approximately 6 months when I finally decided to seek out professional help and or advice. I original went in for my yearly when I spoke to my doctor's PA about infertility testing since nothing seemed to be happening. At first she blamed it on my weight, and told me that 6 months was not long enough. In fact they don't consider a couple infertile until a year of unsuccessful attempts. As she proceeded with the pap she stated that she found a lump in my breast. At 24 this was serious and she felt that I needed to be screened for cancer even though I have no family history. A few weeks later the test was clean and I had no explanation to why I had a lump in my breast. It wasn't more than a week later that I also felt a horrible pain on my right side. At first it was tolerable I though maybe I ate something that didn't agree with me; however after taking a nap and waking up screaming. I found myself under the knife dealing with the reality of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. I was approximately 2-3 months along per the tests and my lump in my breast was a milk gland! I was told that the doctor found my baby, my shredded tube and the ovary in a massive clump floating about in my intestines. Although the doctor cleaned up as much as she could, the possibility of an infection was serious. I lost only my right tube but, suffered 2 weeks in ICU because the side infection did happen and it was very bad.
After dealing with the stress of healing and the fact of losing a baby, I took another test to check whether or not my other tube was scarred or still open. Since the infection was so bad the doctors informed me that I could be infertile. After the test the good news was that my left tube was open however; it’s been approximately 2 1/2 years and still no baby. It was an emotional roll coaster every month waiting and than the following disappointment. What seemed really messed up were the inconsistent periods. I already knew I had a 50/50 chance every other month but, add abnormally long periods on month to short painful ones the next I was an emotional wreck.
My problems didn't end there. In Feb 2008 I was experiencing extreme pain and discomfort almost all the time. It seemed as if I had some kind of kidney issue, at least I came to that conclusion especially when UTI’s became a regular occurrence. Include the embarrassment of losing urine everything I sneeze or cough really hard, I felt like a walking mess. My primary care DR went from... You hurt your back to… you might have kidney stones (when I had blood in my urine) to… the thought process of an autoimmune disease. If that wasn’t bad enough … I was given enough drugs to dope up a horse. I finally had enough when I decided to seek out my ob-gyn since the pain felt like a bad period pain some days and I had the history of this ectopic.
The pain I feel is horrible but it comes and goes. Sometimes I feel as if it's all in my head. The pain regularly sits in my lower back and radiates down my left leg. Some days I feel very sore or tender especially if I eat too much or if my bladder is very full. If I move the wrong way (like a stretch) I get a painful stabbing sensation. Not to mention sex is something I dread! I feel tired all the time and the rest of my body seems as if it’s falling apart. My asthma is consistently flaring up, I get yeast infections more than I can count, My leg’s and ankles swell and retain water, and I feel as if I have arthritis in all my joints. Add the multiple UTI's and constipation I have experienced and you can see how our stories are somewhat similar.
After I spoke to my ob-gyn she told me that she wanted to do an exploratory surgery. She believes me and my pain, and informed me about the possibility of adhesions. I did two different ultrasounds a pelvic and trans-vaginal and found that I have cysts on my ovaries and one on my cervix; my uterus is even enlarged. I never had these before the surgery so, they have developed something within the last 2 years. It’s amazing how a surgery to save your life can complicate your health for years to follow.
After speaking to my ob-gyn today she gave me a really clear picture on what could be going on inside of me. In my case since I had a rupture ectopic pregnancy and a severe infection to boot, she believes I might have developed some spider web like scar tissue throughout my abdominal cavity. Scar tissue like this can cause my organs to stick together. For example my bladder could be stuck to my uterus or my intestine could be stuck to the wall of my abdomen. It’s hard to say what is going on but, adhesions like these are real side effects to infection and surgery. They are invisible too! So a doctor can’t see them on ultrasounds, Catscan’s or MRI’s. In my case she also informed me that everyone’s body reacts differently to stress and pain. Which could be why all my other health issues might have occurred; also I might have a hormonal imbalance causing a bulk of my health problems too.
My doctor told me about a side effect to irregular periods known as polycystic ovary condition. When our female organs get all out of whack some females don’t ovulate when they get their normal surge of estrogen like they should. In fact the estrogen is usually so dominant (a common cause if you have lots of fat cells aka obesity) causing their surge of progesterone to not occur like it should. Don’t quote me but, she explained how each of these hormones controlled the way women ovulate/cycle every month, it’s also a major contributing factor to infertility. Apparently a cyst naturally occurs when an egg is maturing. After it ruptures the cyst shrinks but, in certain cases it doesn’t especially if our hormones are out of whack. This is one reason why some women get the cysts on their ovaries that don’t go away, like in my case.
However there are many other problems that come with an estrogen imbalance. If you look up estrogen dominance side effects include: Uterine Fibroids, Endometriosis, Night sweats, Vaginal Dryness, Weight gain, Tender breasts, Fibrocystic breasts, Mood swings, Irritability, Insomnia, Memory Loss, Dry skin, Irregular periods , Heavy bleeding, PMS, Fatigue, Depression, Low thyroid symptoms, Low libido, Water retention/bloating, Polycystic Ovary Condition, Cyclical migraine headaches, and Atherosclerosis. All of these issues can also cause other symptoms too.
There are so many different problems that can occur with our female organs that it’s a good idea to get your self checked out. My primary care never discussed the possibility of my problems stemming from my female organs. It wasn’t until me seeking out my ob-gyn that I found out the foundation to my issues. The pain or health issue you feel might be subjective but, you could be experiencing all these side effects because you have something really wrong with you.

Hey there. I just had my left ovary and tube removed, and I was told that I would have NO problems conceiving another child. My biggest worry was not about conceiving again, but I found an article saying that if you remove one or both ovaries before the age of 42, you double your chances of Parkinson's disease and dementia. This really frightened me, but when I ask my DR about estrogen replacement, she said no. I am going to go on my own crusade to make sure I find a Dr that knows about this and will do something to prevent this from happening. Estrogen acts as a shield from such diseases for your brain, and even removing on ovary, reduces your estrogen levels, taking away that shield. I will let you know what I find out.

not unless you try IVF which might not work after several attempts and tons of money.

I really connected to your story. I am scheduled next week to have my left ovary and both of my fallopian tubes removed. I have been having so many of the same problems and this is my third surgery. I am thankful I started having my issues after I have my son. He will be 12 in April 09. I just got married May 08 and was worried that we couldn't have a child since he doesn't have any children. I will still have my right ovary so we still have a costly chance but if that's meant to be it will be.
Thanks for sharing your situation. It has helped me feel a little bit more normal and not so crazy.

Hi Ladies!
Don't worry - the removal of one ovary and tube DOES NOT affect fertility!
I was 22 when I my right ovary and tube waere removed due to the huge cyst. I had that time 1-year old son. My surgeon said that it probably affect the future fertility and advised not to use the birth controls pills. Now I am 40, and I have 3 kids. I had no problems with both pregnancies after the surgery, and all my kids were born by vaginal method (no cesarian, like a lot of girl scared they would have after the ovary removal).
Good Luck to All of you!

I had my right ovary and fallopian tube removed in 2001. In 2004 I had a baby boy, in 2005 another baby boy. Both completely healthy pregnancies and babies. I have read some foolish answers on here, let me say the removal of one ovary and tube DOES NOT affect fertility. Your other ovary naturally takes over the monthly release of eggs. The only thing that could occur is if you wait late in life to conceive you may run out of eggs as one side has been releasing them all.

I'm 23 now, and I had to have my right ovary & fallopian tube removed due to it getting tangled and wrapped together and swelling inside of me like a football at the age of 12. I've been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now, and haven't concieved yet. But, everytime I ask my doctor, can I get pregnant, she says yes, but still, it hasn't happened. Another reason she said I can't get pregnant fast is because I'm overweight, even though that shouldn't have anything to do with pregnancy but whatever.

A few months ago I was having extreme pains in my stomach that would nearly make me drop to the floor. After a month I finally woke up screaming and went to the ER. It took three days to find out that my right ovary, appendix, small intestine were all adhered together, and a golf ball sized cyst as well. They removed my appendix, right ovary, and tube. I am an only child and my mother was very concerned with your issue as well. The doctor explained that the right and left ovaries alternate each month to produce. Once one is removed, the other automatically takes over and produces every month. My chances of getting pregnant are just as likely as any one with two as long as I take care of myself. Hormones are not necessary. I am currently not trying to have kids, but am not worried about the possibility later on in life. :-D

I had one ovary removal a few years ago and my body was depleted of estrogen and progeston. I don't believe doctors really know what goes on when removing harmones. I complained for years was sick to death for about a year and didnt know why. After getting on birth control i felt so much better because i believe the harmones were lacking in my body. I don't care what doctors say you need two ovaries to get get harmones your body needs. so if she starts feeling bad please check on birth control and start it right away..anxiety depression..loss of apetite..nasea..just plain sick..rapid heartrate..shortness of breath..please make sure harmones are checked

I recently had both ovaries and tubes removed, because I did the gene testing and I was positive BRCA 2. I am a 1 yr Breast Cancer survivor. I was told that I could still have children, but that I couldn't conceive them. They said that they would take my husbands sperm and inplanted and I would still be able to carry as if I had ovaries and tubes. I hope this answers your question, if not please feel free to contact me with any other questions.
