I'm 23 so it mist be age because I am having the same problem. But it only seems to happen when my period s are heavy and the blood is darker. I think that its a hormone issue may have to do with diet and hydration of the body, it looks to be a common thing from what I have read. Though the smell is awful I'm happy that I'm not the only one with this issue.

Oh WOW! I have been reading post after post grateful to know I am not the only one dealing with this horror of odor around my period, on TOP of the messyness, cramps etc. however I have not been sure I could relate to anyones "cause" yet until I read your post. It is interesting to see what some of the younger women say about symptoms related o getting older. The fact of the matter is that the body does change pretty dramatically in time and everyone gets their turn to find out if they live long enough. For me, paps have been normal, kitty smells fine outside of my period, I stopped using tampons because I became sure trapped blood inside the body was not a good idea (lead in to your theory), no discharge, no painful intercourse, shower and clean my body regularly using organic non synthetic products. I could eat better and drink more water however I am fairly conscious about trying to eat clean, non-processesed food and watch sugar intake. I also wear cotton underwear and have been putting a dab of tea trea oil on my panties because it is ant-fungal/bacterial so I am sure I do not have BV.
Based on what you described, medically it really does make phenomenal sense. My concern though is that I am also 43 but have been experiencing the process you described for several years. Everytime I have tried to solicit help from a "doctor" I keep being told I am fine and yet I go through this embarrasing nightmare every month. I have been saying for years I can't wait to go through menopause. I have been doing things like trying to take chloryphil and milk thistle to regulate my liver but have not een consistent. I am rather surprised at how many women rely on Western Medicine to put a band-aid on this issue when maybe we really have more ability to control it than we think or at least know what the hell is going on. My next move is a naturopathic doctor to put me on a specific combination of cleansing herbs and perhaps something to regulate the blood lining shed a little better. By the time I figure this c**p out I WILL be going through menopause.
Have you or anyone else on this board discovered a naturopathic routine to address this problem? I absolutely am not open to taking antibiotics outside of acidopholis. I saw the posts on using greek yogurt and making a solution with hydrogen peroxide and grapefruit seed extract which I will try. Anymore naturopathic suggestions out there??

If you use tampons it's very possible you have one wedged way up in your vagina. This will cause a very bad decaying odor and discharge. This is obviously because of decaying blood on the tampon. You can check yourself by sitting on the toilet and inserting a lubricated finger. If you can't do it yourself you may need to go to the ER or to see your gynecologist. This is not an uncommon occurrence.

Do any of you or all of you drink coffee of any sort?? Plain or flavored? This could be a contributing factor? How about enough water? I don't and I should!

When it smells it's an infection, when your blood is still red but smells like rotten steak or rotting flesh & otherwise your cycle is normal, it's an infection, even if it's a low level infection of the uteran lining. If your blood burns as it flows out, it may be from an infection. When all the regular tests are negative, & they are only swabbing from cervix down or blood tests (it's more invasive to take a sample to test for uterus infection or pelvic inflammatory disease which is infection of reproductive organs on the north side of the cervix). It's harder to diagnose & can be bacterial, fungal, etc, so diagnosing correctly is important for the right Rx. Aging peri menopause your lining may not flow like before, oxygen can turn your blood brown by oxidation but it doesn't smell much different, if at all. Not all Gynos are great at truly finding the cause of your symptoms, find a Dr who will listen & actually help you cure yourself.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE A BACTERIAL INFECTION. YOU NEED ANTIBIOTICS. MEDICINE WILL BE THE ONLY THING TO GET RID OF THE SMELL FOR GOOD, AND YOU DON'T WANT TO KEEP BAD BACTERIA IN YOUR BODY... IT COULD LEAD TO MORE SERIOUS ILLNESSES. GO TO DOCTOR. OR CALL AND SEE IF OLD FAMILY DOCTOR WILL GIVE YOU A SCRIPT. IF YOU FINISH ALL MEDICINE AND IT'S STILL THERE GET A PAP DONE. GOOD LUCK!
