I've never thought about this until the half this past weekend. On my normal training runs, I cross railroad tracks once and go under them on the way back. For the race, we went under them and then on an overpass back over. Obviously a train would have to be taken into consideration for a race, but what do you do when a train cuts off your training?
Has anyone ever been stuck by a train?

I don't usually encounter railway tracks that often except on some routes when I run under the tracks (like what you said), and sometimes on the tracks. If I do encounter a train due my training run, Ill usually alter my training route by taking a detour or trying something different. Speaking of which has anyone been struck by a train while running?

I have the problem with cars and busses. I usually try to change my route a little so that I don't have to stop (I always found running in place at stop lights a little geeky). As for trains, subways, I run over them. The El (elevated train) I run uder it.

You make me so jealous when you give NY detail like this. Did you know that when I'm rich I'm going to live at the Plaza? The girls and I are booked to spend 5 nights there on my birthday in June. We're going to see the ballet and the Petra exhibit at the History Museum. But then we have to go back. Home. To Ohio.

I stop my watch and stand still at the light (to avoid looking geeky like monk described). I do this at least twice on every route. It's always fun when I do my normal long run route, where I get to cross over the Boulevard - aka The Twelve Lanes of Death - twice.

I don't know how y'all can stop. Once I stop, I can never get back to the pace I was going, and I sure as heck won't want to run very far. Water fountains don't work well for me because of this. If I stop, my run is toast.

I race the train.
Actually, there's a set of tracks right through the middle of town here in Wobegon. The schedule is kept pretty light during the middle of the day, so I'm only stopped maybe once a month. Actually, I make it a time to stretch for a few minutes.
When you talked about running the rails, I thought you were going to post about actually running "on" the rails. I have a running pal that does that a few times a week on the tracks through town here (it's easy to hop off and get on the frontage road if a train comes). But she swears by it for balance. She does 100+ strides at a time before stepping off...dang good balance I've got to say.
